I can't get enough of Ultimate Fighting.... I haven't ever paid for a ticket or pay per view... however, I think all of us guys are just loving this insurgence of Ultimate Fighting.
Has anyone noticed how much coverage Spike TV has been giving time to Ultimate fighting?
Today, they mentioned B.J. Penn out of Hilo.
Also out of Hilo, Cabbage will be Fighting Butterbean in the next Rumble on the Rock.
This new fad sure beats the scripted "Pro" Wrestling that has been around for sometime.
And less yet... the sportsmanship between two people that have just beat the crap out of eachother just amazes me...
Anyother thoughts on Ultimate Fighting?
Some say it's violent... I say it's controlled and less violent than boxing.... I must say why for that matter.... An opponent is allowed to tap out...and that is not a disgrace... however in boxing...if an opponent were to quit..it would be a disgrace...therefore they continue to fight eachother until they have brain damage...Well at least in the long run....
A standing 8 count allows a Boxer to retain his thoughts and stand up again so that his brain will be pummeled again... up to 3 times in one round less yet... compare that to Ultimate fighting....
One Knockdown/Knockout/tap-out/etc...the ref steps in and the match is over.... much more technical and less luck with the lucky swing in my oppinion also.
Thoughts???

Kendall had a fight and represented Hawaii well by beating a fighter from the UK. Kendall was pretty impressive. I was surprised not at his win, but at how smart he fought. His opponent didn't know how to take kendall down. I think the UK fighter thought that Kendall would be scared out of his boots once he started punching and kicking. But much to his disappointment, it didn't affect Kendall at all.
Nice Win!!

Kendall just won a fight against a guy from british columbia because he broke his ribs.i think that he is called spider for a reason and he really proved it thursday night during the fight.i also think that he is going to be hawaiis next star there is no way that anyone can beat his reach its 7.5''8 thats crazy.in the finals i think it is going to be him and ed.eds a crazy guy from britian.and kendall is the crazy hawaiian....so that will be very interesting....

I agree. Kendall has a long reach and I'm cheering him on this saturday. Ed Herman is a pure grappler. He doesn't have much in the stand up game. I think that's where Kendall needs to focus. Kendall has a decent stand up game to keep out of reach of his takedown attempts. I think Kendall also hits hard, not hard for a knock out, but hard enough that Ross and Kalib didn't want to strike with him long.
I say lots of Kicks, Knees, Jabs and uppercuts will win this one for Kendall. If Ed gets on the ground, Kendall still has a decent ground game to stay alive. Go Kendall!! :) :D

Congratulations to local boy Kendall Grove!
The Maui fighter just scored himself a 6-figure contract with the UFC, and the title of Ultimate Fighter. Kendall got the decision after 3 action-packed rounds in Las Vegas tonight.
Way to represent the Aloha State and the Valley Isle!
Plus, if you were following the show this season, Falaniko Vitale and Wesley "Cabbage" Correira got plenty of screen-time as well. Their huge posters were on the walls of the UFC training facility and were hard to miss.
Exciting fight, too. If you missed it, look for a replay if possible.

I don't like Boxing or any Contact Sport! I have my reasons.
Many amateur and professional fighters past, present and future are only a punch away from death or major disability due to brain injury. Also, the contionous blows to the head makes them a primary candidate to brain diseases.
"The American Association of Neurological Surgeons say that 90% of boxers sustain a brain injury."
"Being hit on the head can cause fractures to the bone of the head and face and tissue damage in the brain. A blow can damage the surface of the brain, tear nerve networks, cause lesions, bleeding and sometimes produce large clots within the brain." http://menshealth.about.com/od/fitness/a/boxing.htm
From http://www.parkinson.org/site/pp.asp?c=9dJFJLPwB&b=164717
Boxing and The Brain
"In his article Dr. Ira Casson a prominent New York neurologist and an expert on boxing discusses boxing and Parkinson disease. There's been much interest in this because of Muhammad Ali. The following can be said: It's uncertain if there's a relationship between Ali's Parkinson and boxing. Boxing when it causes brain damage results in an Alzheimer like disease This is not what Ali has. Ali's mind is sharp. It's rare for boxing to result in only Parkinson disease. And most boxers do not develop Alzheimer or Parkinson. George Foreman is on television doing a fine job selling his grill. And he fought longer and took more blows than Ali."
Nope. No congratulations from me tonight or any other night to any Boxer from Hawai'i or anywhere else in the World.

"Da Spider" representing!!!!! Well done. Another redhead from Team Quest forced to reevaluate his game. I like Kendall's humility and the respect he showed after the fight. It looks like he is going be Tito's protege'. He has a playful side but he also has a deadly serious side. Nice balance.
Auntie, they use 4 oz. gloves which at first seems barbaric but the damage is seen immediately (acutely) and not allowed to pile up which some say can be correlated to Parkinson's disease.

We all choose our own paths to make a living or to make life better.
Congradulations to 'Da Spyder' from Maui, Kendall Grove!! I was cheering him on. He should go far with Team Punishment. But, he needs to learn to use his size and his reach. Kendall's good on the ground, but going against someone who is just as good, and with no stand up, he could have had a more decisive victory.
But it's a good win.

I stay on the mainland (Utah Specifically) and I was interested (spectator only) in mixed martial arts ever since I saw this skinny dude (Royce Gracie) take down Kimo. Little did I know that the skinny dude would start a trend of Ground fighting like Bruce Lee did with his Intercepting Fist.
As to the morality of hand to hand combat, well, it's a choice that these fighters make and a lifestyle that they have accepted, risks and all. Fist and Kick fighting is very damaging, that's a fact. But, what also changes mixed martial arts is the submission fighting; which in my opinion is not nearly as damaging as a boxing contest (as mentioned in the previous post). The safety and health of the fighters in mixed martial arts falls on the Referee. Big John McCarthy, referee of the UFC, actually commented that in the early days of the UFC, he wished that he could stop fights to prevent long term or permanent injury to some of the fighters (http://www.knucklepit.com/mixed-martial-arts-john_mccarthy.htm). Now in Pride and UFC Mixed Martial Arts fighting the referees do stop the fight once the fighters are KO'd or doing the 'chicken dance.' Which I think is better then the REF counting to 10 and giving the boxer an opportunity to continue fighting. Once the dude is KO'd or dazed, the REF stops the fight to prevent further injury. That's what I like about MMA. I know fighters possess a 'no surrender' attitude, but there's always a next time to get that guy back. Anyways, that's my thoughts on the issue. So MMA to me is way safer (I know, this could be argued) than boxing.
Now thoughts about MMA from a spectator view point. Every day I go to work, exercise, spend time with the wife and kids. Watching MMA (especially UFC) gives me an escape from myself and to enjoy 2 trained 'gladiators' of our day. I could never do that kind of stuff, but I like to watch it and I have get enjoyment from watching. Watching MMA also motivates me to stay on my diet program and exercise, since I have a tendency to overeat (thanks kanak attack -- nah, jus joke). In fact, MMA actually got me started on exercise and dieting. I lost 30 pounds in 2 to 3 months and am very pleased with the results. So, it's definitely an escape for me and a motivating factor for my life. When it’s over, I go back to my mild mannered self.
Well, that's my thoughts. Thanks Manoa for the oppportunity to wala'au. What do u think about what I posted here? I'll be interested to hear your views.

Man, that was something. Felt bad for Kimo that day but it wasn't just Kimo that Gracie neutralized in those early UFC's. Nobody could handle him.

nachodaddy
June 26th, 2006, 02:38 PM
Tito cuz Shamrock really wanted the yellow car. :)
Arlovsky cuz he won't make the same mistakes twice.
Jens Pulver is back, who wants a rematch between him and BJ at 155? 170 I say BJ. 155, this would be a heck of a fight. I heard Jens is doing a lot of work in Hawaii as well, GF is from Kauai.
kealiinaauao
June 28th, 2006, 10:17 AM
Tito is gonna put the hurt on Shamrock. Tito just has more skills, longer reach, strong stand-up, and has great ground skills. Shamrock has good leg locks and some what of a good stand up  , but he can't keep up with Tito. Shamrock was good back in the old days, but his time is definitely over. In the last 5 fights that Shamrock had, he lost all of them except one. I don't even know why they put Shamrock in the UFC Hall of Fame. In my opinion, I think it was more of a pity recognition.
Now the induction of Randy Couture was definitely well deserved. He's had some major accomplishments and defeated several big name dudes. So it's natural that "The Natural" get's inducted, definitely a Hall of Famer competitor. :D
As for Arlovski and Silvia, I definitely think Arlovski is going to win this fight  . I think Arlovski learned from his last fight to be patient and not to just go charging in blind. What I think we’ll see is a huge overhand right that knocked out Silvia the last 2 fights and then we’ll probably see Arlovski either apply another leg lock, or let Silvia Stand up again so Arlovski can hit him again with that same right. The last fight, I think Arlovski helped Silvia knock him out. If you watch the fight, Arlovski went into Silvia’s right hand. More than anything Arlovski got to overanxious when he knocked Silvia out.
As for Team Dagger, I think Kendall’s the only one holding up his end  . ‘nuff said. :) :D

I have to give proper respect to Kendall Groves. He really represented the home state, wrapping himself in the Hawaiian flag. After his fight with Ed I got choked up. Honestly, I didn't expect Dana to give Ed a contract, too, after Kendall was announced the winner. It was amazing. Additionally, something I found extremely heart warming was how Matt Hamil beat the living crap out of that other guy. It doesn't matter that Matt is deaf; that guy is a crazy fighter.
I think that when Tito and Shamrock face off, Tito is going to win. I hate Tito's attitude, but he's still the better fighter, and he trained Kendall, so Tito's got my respect.

So the fight starts at 10pm EST/ 8pm MST/ 7pm PST and 4pm HST. Now that's assuming there's no time delay in broadcast to hawaii, which then everything goes out the window. :p

Overall, pretty darned boring night.
I think Herb Dean stopped Ortiz-Shamrock too early. Maybe not by much, but still. I don't think John McCarthy would've stopped it so fast.
And I think we can certainly expect to see Ortiz-Shamrock III, probably before the year is out.
Wish they would've aired the post-fight interviews, too. I would've loved to have heard what Shamrock had to say. :p

But then BJ lost to St. Pierre in USA vs Canada. I was wondering like what he was doing this year.
Also, I was just thinking... it's all Ken's fault for not defending those elbows.

Title: Re: Kendall Grove & Ultimate Fighting
Overall, pretty darned boring night.
I think Herb Dean stopped Ortiz-Shamrock too early. Maybe not by much, but still. I don't think John McCarthy would've stopped it so fast.
And I think we can certainly expect to see Ortiz-Shamrock III, probably before the year is out.
I agree, I think John Mccarthy would have waited before stopping the fight. But it's not Herb Dean's fault, if you watch the playback, Ken isn't defending himself. Tito had 5 unanswered shots and Ken didn't look like he was defending at all. Even if Herb Dean let Tito hit him 3 or 4 more times, Ken still wouldn't have done anything. :(
So I blame Shamrock for the short lived fight. If he wanted the fight to continue, BLOCK TITO'S ELBOWS!!

Reported last week in the normal channels. Did not make it here so I am posting it.
Georges St. Pierre's "Rush" to recovery from a severe groin pull will not happen fast enough to rematch UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes on September 23, the UFC announced on its Web site Wednesday afternoon.
Filling the vacated slot to face Hughes is the only man to beat the champion mixed martial artist since March 2001: Hawaii's B.J. Penn
Now, before everyone starts hugging on BJ's privates, if he goes into this match like he did with GSP, he will lose, again. BJ needs to adopt a sense of urgency and attack better on the ground or Hughes will overpower him. Hughe's standup is suspect, what he does on the ground is not.
Right here, right now, Hughes has the belt, regardless of what has transpired in the past. BJ has to demonstrate, without a doubt, enough action to take it away from Hughes. Total beatdown or submission from BJ. I don't think BJ can knock Hughes out.
Thoughts?????

*runs to hug on BJ's private parts* :p , Gotta go wit da loco boy on dis one :D . I'm hoping there was a lesson learned from the GSP bout and that the pychological factor of losing plays on Hughes mind just enough for the "prodigy" to re-apply the rear naked choke :) .

Trigg could not finish with a RNC it and it was sunk deep............BJ has smaller arms though........he can get it deeper.
Cardio is gonna be big part since this will be going five. Penn looked gassed after three with GSP.

And it's gonna be on FREE TV! Even better! :D

Saw the Penn/St. Pierre fight on Spike-TV last night. Penn clearly won the first round, lost the second, and tied the third. St. Pierre squeaked away with the decision.
Agree that Hughes will beat Penn, unless Penn gets lucky.

BJ has heavy hands and can deliver devastating strikes. Let's not forget what he did to GSP's face. BJ has also beaten Gomi (Pride's LightWeight champion) who has also great standup. BJ has never lost due to KO, TKO, or submission. Hughes has no stand-up, and I don't care what Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan say, he's not in the same league as BJ. On there last fight, BJ rocked Hughes with a sudden strike when Hughes was on the ground (if you've seen it, you know what I mean). Once Hughes felt that punch, he didn't want to stay on the ground anymore, so he tried to stand up and gave his back. Meaning, BJ wins standup.
Next, BJ has superior ground game because of his flexibility and knowledge of submissions. BJ has beaten any and all Gracie’s he’s faced. BJ won a grappling tournament held in Brazil for heaven’s sake when he just got his black belt just a week before. The dude is a tuff summa bich.
Ok, now, this is where I will concede. It was mentioned in a previous post that BJ’s training and cardio is suspect. I read somewhere that he does not want to take training serious because he gets burnt out fast. It’s not an exact quote but this concerns me. Hughes can go 5 rounds easy, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s got excellent conditioning. But with BJ, I’m not so confident. That GSP fight, it did seem like he was gassed at the end. GSP was gassed because BJ hit him so hard. I was surprised that GSP could stand after some of the blows they traded. But GSP was able to score with the judges using take downs and leg kicks because his conditioning was awesome. It seemed BJ was looking for a KO punch and GSP just had too much heart to go down. BJ's conditioning wasn't as good from the looks of him.
Overall, I hope BJ wins, it’s just I hope he doesn’t take it lightly and trains really hard. The problem with being confident is that it leads to pride. And pride precludes a huge fall. Anyways, my 2 cents :)

It looks like this fight might not happen. I guess PrideFC does not want to send Silva to the UFC for this fight, which I think is a rip off. The UFC sent Liddell to PrideFC three times, why not send Silva to the UFC for one fight. And the UFC should not have announced the fight if it was still in negotiations and no agreement had been settled.
I'm disappointed that this fight won't happen. I'm pretty sure Silva would win, but we'll never know now.

From what I understand, they are still working on terms. Dana White is gonna turn out to be an @ss for announcing this before the ink was on the paper or he is gonna be the hero who brought the two best LHWs together.
Pride versus UFC rules, how much to pay, ring versus cage, nothing is finalized yet.
Pride will be in the US soon, Dana is either trying to jump on the bandwagon or is setting up for a merger.

Actually, your right 'hungry.' I was listening to an interview at work online with josh barnett, and he said that he got paid more in 1 fight for pride than the whole time he was at UFC.
But I don't think that's fair, especially since MMA was a relatively new thing back in 93 to 02. MMA was under siege by the likes of opportunistic politicans hoping to make themselves the good guys by banning the sport. And the UFC just started becoming profitable because of accepting regulation and legal issues that exist here in the US. In Japan, there's no such obstacles that need to be overcome. Japan and Brazil had these no holds barred fights as well as mixed martial arts fighting well before this concept caught on in the US. So the UFC is getting bigger and able to get new viewership.
But for right now, Pride is definitely more of a cash cow then UFC. But time will tell.

Couple of videos of this floating around. Cro-Cop did a good job keeping the fight on the feet and controlling distance, effectively rendering Silva's Muy Thai useless.

What does everyone think about the undercard??
Mike Swick (11-1) vs. David Loiseau (15-5) Standup I give it to Mike. On the ground, David has some sick elbows. Plus David has that spinning back kick to the liver move down pat. Should be interesting
Jason Lambert (22-5) vs. Rashad Evans (9-0) I actually like Lambert in this one. He is battle tested and has a 8 match win streak going. Evans is legit on his feet but he has not shown he has knockout power.
Jens Pulver (21-6-1) vs. Joe Lauzon (12-3): I like Jens in this one, nice standup, he beat BJ back in 2002. Plus the Kauai connection.
Gabe Ruediger (10-2) vs. Melvin Guillard (38-6-3). Melvin, 1st round TKO
Roger Huerta (14-1-1) vs. Jason Dent (12-6): Both making their UFC debuts. Don't know much about these guys..........
Mario Neto (9-3) vs. Eddie Sanchez (7-0): Sanchez, only because I know someone who trains with him.
Danny Abbadi (2-2) vs. Jorge Gurgel (12-1)- If Jorge can keep his hands up and listen to his corner, he will overcome Danny on the ground. If not, Danny will blast him into next week.
David Lee (5-1) vs. Tyson Griffin (7-0). The British are coming, the British are coming. Lee, submission specialist versus Tyson, brute force. Tossup.....

BJ and Matt were on the Adam Carrola show this morning. Hughes was in studio. BJ called in............. BJ was relaxed, talked about missing his flight to the mainland cuz he was in the water surfing. He talked about not training professionally, only training to be happy.
Some say that BJ is not taking this match serious.
Some say that this is just mind games so Hughes will alter his gameplan AKA not take risks and grind it out to a decision.
In a previous interview, BJ did say that the loss to GSP was due to him overtraining. He said for the Hughes match, he went back to the training regimen that he had for his first victory.
Just the messenger here, everything prior to the fight means nothing, what happens in the ring means everything. This will be a good match. Hoping for BJ but not confident enough to put money on it............

Just got back from watching the fight...........
BJ is the most talented, gifted MMA magician currently in the game. His standup is exemplary, his takedown defense is superb, and his BJJ is without peer..................
EXCEPT when he gasses. He had Hughes in both rounds 1 and 2. Had Hughes turning purple at the end of 2.........Hughes saved by the bell...........BJ got nothing in the tank to start round 3.........Hughes gets the takedown and then side control........traps an arm..........and beats BJ senseless.......ref stoppage........Hughes by TKO.
BJ was on the mat for over a minute before he was helped up and sat on a stool...........then he needed help out of the ring.........no premature stoppage.......Hughes would have killed him...........BJ has no defense.
Oh, Hughes is still an * hole with the post fight comments, however he still has the belt.

There is a rumor circulating throughout the fight underground that BJ seperated a rib late in the 2nd while trying to submit Matt. So far just rumor...
.....but it makes sense. BJ looked like a corpse coming out of his corner in the third. Total meltdown. Being the proud owner of a permanently floating rib, I can tell ya that when it happened, it hurt like heck and it was very, very difficult to breathe through it. Not getting any air is going to throw your game off fer sure.

I have to disagree with this. Hughes isn't an * hole. Matt is always gracious in victory just look at his previous fights with gracie, trigg, newton, and sherk. Penn was the one that was acting like wanderlei silva. But if someone was pushing my buttons and not even giving respects, then heck yah I'd put an exlamation mark on my victory by telling everyone that I won.
But Matt isn't like that at all. He's very humble. He was asked by the UFC to talk some trash to hype any fight that he gets. Even what GSP said, was uncharacteristic of him, he was just trying to hype the next fight up. Kinda like Ali.
Anyways, I liked swick altho he gassed in the last round. I really like Guillard, he's a fighter that should get the winner of the florian/ sherk fight.

Funny thing is, I thought at first CroCop was afraid of getting punched or what not. But then as I continued watching, it appeared CroCop was more precise with his strikes while silva wanted to throw for the fences. I think for silva melee fighting is more his style. Since CroCop is more specific with his strikes he avoided an all out punch fest with silva, which I think is very smart. He picked apart silva like he was some dude off the street.

I didn't believe this theory mentioned above cuz shamrock pulled the same thing. But now that BJ has officially come out and say what was wrong, now the 3rd round is more believable. Unable to breathe and get strength from the core is crucial in MMA. Everything comes from the core. I'm moving out to Maui in three months with my girlfriend and her father. Her father is moving out there next month, his flight is for November 13th...five days before Matt Hughes fights St. Pierre. My question is are there any bars in Maui that show the UFC pay-per-view fights at all?

You said he's moving to Kihei, right? There aren't any sports bars like you can find on the Mainland with lots of big screen TVs (after all, most people like their sports outside, not sitting inside a bar in Hawai'i;) ) but he can try this place (http://www.10best.com/Maui/Nightlife/Bars/index.html?businessID=80618) in Kihei.

Didn't expect to see an MMA thread on this board.
Anyone catch the Pride Las Vegas show last night?
Fedor v Coleman was the headliner
Randleman v Shogun was another feature matchup
Barnett v Some Polish Juduoka
Lawler v Some guy who got his ass kicked
Overall I was pretty psyched to see a card that featured the MW GP Champ and the HW Champ. Pride is going to raise the MMA bar for the UFC. I hope to see an annual "superbowl" of MMA each year where the champs from each organization square off every new years.

Anyone hear about the RIOT in Hilo last weekend after the Fights at the Civic?
He's sure the crowd was pumped up from the "Beatdown II" martial arts event held earlier that night at the Hilo Civic Auditorium....
"I'd say there were 15 police cars," he said. "They all got out and they looked like a platoon. I saw a beer bottle shatter on the roof of a police car. Rocks hit a parked SUV."
"Because there were so many people, we probably didn't pick up as many as we should have. We didn't have the manpower," Miyamoto said. "It started at 3 a.m. and I couldn't release my guys until 5:30 a.m. It took two and a half hours for us to disperse enough people to say it was safe for us to leave the area."
The mood was reminiscent of an incident 16 years ago where one Hilo officer died, Miyamoto said.

The "riot" took place hours after the fights ended.
From the same story:
Others say similar incidents involving fights and rowdiness are all too common on the horseshoe-shaped strip of bayfront hotels, condos and eateries.
"Sometimes the road is filled with people," said one Reeds Bay resident who withheld his name. "They stop traffic, there's so many of them out there beefing it up. I don't even get up anymore."
Added Spicer: "They also had some rowdiness down here about a month ago. Cops had a guy down here; an ambulance was fixing him up. They were all pumped up on ice. Someone went home and got the cousins. That was when it got rowdy."
Brawling is normal for the area. It happens frequently, even when there are no MMA events taking place.
Here's another interesting passage, including quotes from the owner of the bar where the latest brawl took place:
He said he and the hotel operators have also pressed the county for a police substation on Banyan, where the unsafe atmosphere keeps tourists indoors at night.
"Every hotel has offered free space for the substation. I said right in front of my door would be a great spot. The county hasn't done anything," he said.
Takahashi said he complies with noise ordinances and makes every effort to be a good neighbor. He said he had conferred with his head of security and believed the scene had been staged.
"They were all at another club saying if we didn't let them in, they were going to start a riot. I want to press charges, but they were never in my club," he said.
Takahashi said he has already complied with community requests for soundproofing and more security.
"We've done everything people have asked," he said. "I'd love to listen to the community if they have any more suggestions."
Sounds like the problem is with drugged-up drunk idiots... not holding MMA events on the island.
Oahu used to have problems with brawling at the Blaisdell and nearby parking lots... thanks to efforts by the various promoters and HPD, things have really calmed down in the past year or two.

A rebel doesn't care about the facts. All he wants to do is yell... Any story sounds true until someone tells the other side and sets the record straight.
Proverbs 18:2, 17
I used to live in the Condo's right next to Shooters...the Country Club Condo's.
Banyan Drive was not like this when I left Hilo in '97.
Most of the people that conglamorate in that area NOW are actually from out of Hilo town and have no other places to hang out after hours...
The problem lies more with the fact that there is not enough bars and/or things for people to do in Hilo at times.... so what do they do...they drive around...go party party... Drink and Drive...etc... then when nothing better to do... or run out of Alcohol...(cause Alcohol sales do end at 11:00 in Hilo..) they want to go into an establishment and have a drink.... there are only maybe 3-4 places to go to after hours in Hilo and some 2000 plus drinkers during an event like this....
You said it best that Blaisdell had the problem of fights and it has now mellowed out.... Big Island just started having MMA recently and having bouts at the civic....Instead of Beefing inside of the Civic ... they are told to take there problems elsewhere.... thus, allowing them not to be so associated with fighting because of MMA at the civic... Kind of like "take it outside" however, it tends to spill down onto banyan drive...which is less than a 1/4 mile from the Civic... The Alcohol, Combined with I'm sure some Drugs, as well as Stupidity... as WELL as the "Fighters Mentality" that many MMA artists have along with their "POSSE" can create some chaos....
Remember what happened outside of Zanzabar with BJ PENN here on OAHU?
Anyone remember back in about 1999 when MMA fighters were targeting UH Football players to "pick" fights with...?

I guess your next best bet is going to be to start calling the bars around town.
Depending on where your staying, you might be able to order it on PPV.

Hope is a powerful thing. About as powerful as a left high kick upside the head. GSP went Cro Cop on Hughes....... War GSP!!!!!
Will we get the rubber match between Hughes and GSP first or will BJ heal in time for a rematch with GSP?
Edit: Actually Serra gets the first shot at GSP. He needs to work on his standup or it will be a first round TKO. If GSP can stalemate BJ on the ground, Serra better stay on his feet.

I was shocked that it wasn't even close. hughes had his arse handed to him. I was pulling for the snowman, and he gave a very disappointing performance. I'm not even sure how interesting a hughes/GSP rematch would be. I'd be more excited about it if the fight was a little closer.

Niko Vitale loses to Jermy Horn last night, in Oakland Ca. It's to bad for Niko as he has lost four of his last five fights, I like his style, and I hope he keeps going.

From the story:
Horn made a successful return to the ring after a four-month layoff by beating Vitale by split decision in the five-round main event. Horn, looking much worse for the wear, let out a sigh of relief when the final score was announced — 48-47, 47-48 and 48-47 — in his favor. This was a fight most prognosticators tabbed Horn to win and while he did take home the victory in the end, it was not an easy night for the crafty veteran.
Wonder if it would have went differently on the scorecards if they fought at the Blaisdell... :D

The new season of Ultimate Fighter starts tonight. Hilo's B.J. Penn is one of the two coaches, and UH grad Andy Wang is one of the 16 fighters. There was this story in today's Advertiser (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Apr/05/br/br6432089157.html) and here's a couple of excerpts:
"Hilo mixed martial arts fighter BJ Penn is about to become a household name.
Tonight, he makes his debut as one of the coaches on Spike's "Ultimate Fighter 5," one of the most popular cable shows on TV.
"Showtime is 7 p.m. The Ultimate Fighter is a reality series that has been nominated twice for Emmys.
"The show spends six weeks tracking 16 mixed martial artists as they live with and fight each other for a chance to win a six-figure UFC contract.
(...)
"This year, the UFC is banking on the animosity between Penn and Iowa-based Jens Pulver to be the main sublot. (sic) (I'm sure they meant subplot)
"I respect him — he's a world champion and I know he's dangerous," Penn, 28, told The Advertiser in an earlier interview about Pulver, 32. "But I just don't like him. That guy runs his mouth way too much"
Pulver's take on Penn: "He's not a rival anymore, he's a straight nemesis He's a great fighter. He's a legend in the sport. But I really want to knock him out."
(...)
"On Season III, Maui's Kendall Grove won a six-figure contract. This year, Andy Wang, a University of Hawai'i graduate, is one of the fighters."

Yeah, the ref made the right call. I think Chuck would have gotten more of a beating from Rampage if it wasn't stopped. They got a tuff job, trying to prevent unneeded injuries and maintain the acceptance of the sport. A lot harder calls than in boxing.

I agree that it was a close call whether or not to stop it, but I think once Chuck has seen the replays and sees his unfocused eyes, he'll clearly agree.
He wasn't knocked clear out, but he was sure close to it.
Good call by the ref. (Big John McCarthy, as I recall.)

Great fight card, top to bottom! Always fun to watch Parisyan, Din Thomas did well, as did Kalib Starnes. And how about that Houston Alexander? Holy moley! Watch out for that guy.

Shocked about Kendall Grove, but stoked about BJ Penn!
Had to love Penn's entrance into the ring. House lights went down, Bruddah IZ comes blasting out of the rafters with "E Ala E" as Penn made the long walk from the locker room and into the arena. They had time to play the whole song. Cool! Hope it made some new IZ fans there in England, and those who watched on TV too.
Not surprising to see Penn and his boys all wearing Kau Inoa t-shirts as they entered the ring, since he's done that TV commercial recently and is the latest celebrity to say "I placed my name."
He beat a good opponent and deserved the win. Next up, Sean Sherk, the deposed champ. Fight's supposed to be in June. I predict BJ will win again.
