In 1934, a construction endeavor downslope struck a master conduit of this (special formation). This caused massive water drainage of the upslope area. Name this phenomenon and the area it's in.

I really tried to phrase the question so as for someone to figure out what I'm asking while at the same time not give it away. I don't believe I accomplished this, and I just wanted to share this place with you all anyways. There's a few of these around the islands and the largest I think is in Ewa.

It's the Moiliili Karst.

Wow brah, I knew there was an underground cave system in the Mo'ili'ili area, but I had no idea it was that big!

Here's a cool photo (http://starbulletin.com/2006/02/19/features/art1b.jpg) from a Feb. 2006 SB article that featured an almost 400-page book called, "Mo'ili'ili -- The Life of a Community."

I found the following quote really intriguing because my dad is from Mo'ili'ili and I ate at the old Kuhio Grill many times.

Businesses are documented, from the Miyazono Open-Air Theatre that screened American silent films starring Mary Pickford, Tom Mix and Rudolph Valentino, to Kuhio Grill, where a kitchen floor led to a water-filled cavern where those in the know could catch mullet.

I think that would be highly doubtful (http://www.explorebiodiversity.com/Hawaii/hikes/Moiliili/caveorganisms.html).

perpetual darkness and humidity, lack of important environmental cues, complex mazelike living space, stressful or even lethal gas mixtures, patchy food resources, barren rocky substrates, wet and slippery vertical surfaces, and occasional flooding.

That view looks a lot like the view one enjoys looking toward Kane'ohe and the Marine Corps Base Hawaii from Kailua Beach Park on the Windward Side of O'ahu...the town in Hawai'i my mom calls home! To get there from Honolulu, take the Pali into Kailua, hang a right in downtown Kailua onto Kailua Road, and follow it all the way to either Buzz's Steak House, (of course, making the left at the traffic light where Kailua Road intersects with Wanaao Road) or cut behind the General Store which I can never remember the name of over that way. That view can be seen from anywhere along the beach within Kailua Beach Park.

So...am I right?

I wondered that, too - if it was Lanikai/Kailua, but it looked a little farther south than that to me. (But then, you can't really get that same view farther south, can you? Once you curve around past Bellows, it's not quite the same.) Okay, I'm gonna throw my lot in with SFB. (Best beach on O`ahu, the AF from Kane`ohe tells me.)

regarding Kahala beach and how to get there...

The particular location you're situated at looks like the area where you park your car along Kahala Ave. near the Hunakai st. intersection and walk down a long beach access path. Although, it looks like you've walked quite a bit ways east of the access path.

I go there all the time.

Excellent. Kahala Beach. Yep, walk through that little path at the end of Hunakai. No tourists there fo shua.

I walked out on the pipe to the breakers way out in the water. The water never got above my knees as I did so. Pretty cool.

I'll pull out some more pictures from my trip and see if you can guess them.

Here's (http://www.reelserviceshawaii.com/mydad/) another photo of Kahala Beach from the foot of the Hunakai St. path, looking west (need to scroll down just a bit)! I was there this past May 27 and the tide was so high that there was no beach left...the waves were washing up on the path.

I'll give this thread a shot with this question: This area of Hawai'i is reputed to be the largest subdivided neighborhood in the entire USA, if not the world. It surely must be the largest in Hawai'i. Where is this subdivision located within the state and what is its name?

Ocean View, Big Island

Liberty answers my question correctly, unlike my feeble attempt to answer drumorgan's Kahala Beach question. (Well..there is some similarity there, yeah?) Ocean View, commonly refered to as HOVE, for Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, is one monster subdivision, located on the extreme southern end of the Big Island. Many plats within HOVE have clear views of South Point.

A cigar...wait..make that a Ka'u orange...to our winner Liberty!

Yes, Spitting Caves, located in Portlock, Hawaii Kai, at the end of Lumahai st.

Very similar angle to PZ's, I must admit. But nah, I wouldn't bother photoshopping in a bunch of fishermen risking their lives on the edge of that cliff.

In my shot, I caught the ending part of the cave spitting, which is located at the bottom of that steep, shadowed cliff area towards the center-bottom.

Ahem.. it's a bit farther apart from Spitting Caves than just a few feet, both by location and in height from sea level.

I'm looking for a (nick) name more specific than "Portlock" or "Cliffs of Portlock".

China Walls it is.

Located in Portlock, Hawaii Kai. Get on Poipu Drive, then turn on Hanapepe Loop and park near (not in!) Hanapepe Place, where the (short) access trail is located.

Before you get to the trail, you'll be greeted with this Obelisk..

There was a front page story in yesterday's Honolulu Advertiser about the Increase of Drownings (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2006/Jun/18/ln/FP606180362.html) on Oahu.

Quoted from article: "Nowhere on O'ahu are the conditions more dangerous than along the cliffs at Maunalua Bay in Hawai'i Kai, said John Clark, author and former Honolulu firefighter."

Ironically, when I hung out there a day before taking those shots, a young lady swimming in the water had a brief scare as she tried climbing the rocky edge to get back up on land. The incoming waves almost knocked her back in and she kinda' panicked. So she jumped back in the water and her surfer boyfriend escorted her to shore more up seaward where the rock shelf is closer to sea level - albeit, more slippery (mossy).

http://www.96seven44.com/images/chinawalls_ledge.jpg
The height to jump in the water at China Walls (shown above) isn't the scary part.
It's the incoming waves (not shown) that break along the SLIPPERY ledge that can be tricky when trying to get out.

There was also a large Honu nearby on this day. Also some larger difficult-to-identify "fish" jumping out of the water in the distance. Not to mention at least 30 young people basking in the sun and just having a good time.

As for Spitting Caves, you've got to be suicidal to jump into the water there.

BTW, as I add these photos, can you tell me the code to shrink the display here with the img tagSee this thread on including images in posts (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=31). To have the system generate a thumbnail for you, you need to attach your image to the message. However, there is a limit to the number of files you can have as attachments across your various posts to the board, so this isn't the best option.

You should instead have a thumbnail version of your photos already available online, alongside the original. You'd then embed the thumbnail in the post (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/images/editor/insertimage.gif) then make that thumbnail a link (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/images/editor/createlink.gif) to the original. Most online photo hosting sites generate thumbnails for exactly this purpose. I'm pretty sure the Blogger system (which it appears you use) does this, as does Photobucket, Flickr, and others.

If you cannot provide a thumbnail for whatever reason, please do not insert the full-size original. Just make a hyperlink to the image file (like this (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/8075/2234/1600/DSC_0152.jpg)) that others can click to view.

Close enough. I'm not sure where the restaurant is. This is part of the trail that goes to the falls.

Great call on Paradise Park. Sad that it is gone. (well, technically, it is not gone, I guess)

I parked and talked with the guy who charged for parking. His family evidently owns/leases the land. He was very nice. We were there in the big rain, and he gave us mosquito repellant, umbrellas, panchos, and even his personal walking stick for me to use. Super guy.

I have fond memories of going there as a kid to see the bird shows. We would go there and to Sea Life Park whenever someone would come to visit us from the mainland.

I't a mural in a hotel lobby, though I can't remember which one. Sheraton Waikiki? Hilton Hawaiian Village? Pacific Beach Hotel? Hyatt Regency Waikiki?

If memory serves me right (hardly ever), there's one similar to that in the lobby of the Kealani Resort in Wailea, Maui.
