(for the record, I can't believe I'm making a thread about this)
For some reason, I made a myspace account/page today and I just finished making it pretty. You can look at it here (http://www.myspace.com/adelossa).

Are they giant mufflers? They couldn't be, because mufflers are supposed to make your car quieter. Those things make the cars more noisy! :(

How many friendz & family you got (in: myspace)? I think I got a small combonation, & that's enough for me. ;)

I have a MySpace page....you can see it here (http://www.myspace.com/3713848). Mine's pretty bare-bones. I don't use MySpace all that much, though it HAS allowed me to connect with some high school classmates I hadn't talked to since I left college, so that has made having a MySpace worthwhile for me. :)

I've got a profile here (http://www.myspace.com/ryanozawa). I used to scoff at MySpace, but have had to give grudging respect, both for its 800-lb. gorilla status in the space and for the fact that it's become such a networking hub, it's become one of the primary places I use to keep tabs on old friends. It ain't pretty, sometimes, but as a longtime advocate and fan of personal publishing, if it gets my friends communicating, I'll take it.
I've actually been paying a bit more attention to MySpace lately, because of all the bad publicity (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=7778&highlight=myspace) the site's gotten. I feel like I've got to make use of and emphasize some of the legitimate, if even only just for fun, features of such sites, lest people think that stalkers and pedophiles are all there is to them.
Not only do I keep in touch with friends and old classmates, for example, but I've discovered many professional colleagues there, as well as several excellent local musicians (and music was the first focus of MySpace).
FYI, Adri, we've previously discussed a number of social networking sites (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=1782), in addition to MySpace. Because I'm a dork, I've got profiles on dozens of them... though I barely use any of them.

I just like to make fun of those kinds of people. I just bought the game to use it as a benchmark for computer, so I won't expect to keep it for long.

Nah. I just learned from my cousin and sister, because they've been sucking the bandwidth from the network because of myspace. And of course, I know basic HTML coding, so that helps to. :p

I've got my myspace account here (http://www.myspace.com/meetinhonolulu). I actual use it to find new potential members for my social internet group. Its seems like everyone is on myspace and that they devote alot of time and energy to the site. So most of the members of myspace are on the internet alot i'm assuming they would come over and join my group too.

Based on my avatar photo I guess I've really, REALLY lived!
Late last year I met a very nice lady, my age, who works at Kapiolani Women's Center. She's a travelling mammographer and spends 3-6 months at a time in different areas of the country. This was her first trip to Hawaii. She told me last week-end that Hawaii has, by far, the youngest looking women for their ages than any other state she's lived in. And, yes, she meant from the neck up! :D

From another thread (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=8444):
Indeed! The fact that a City Deputy Prosecutor has a MySpace profile isn't all that remarkable -- for all the bad press MySpace gets, lots of people are members (musicians, teachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc.). But the fact that Sanada's is reportedly as irreverent as that, especially given the clear attention rightfully paid to maintaining an appropriate public image in other venues, is quite curious. It doesn't seem that curious to me. MySpace pages tend to be entirely personal and not at all work-related. And you can't control what kind of comments your friends post on your page -- although of course you can delete them if you really don't like 'em. Sanada looks to be in his mid-20s; I'm gonna guess that he's still single, and that he likes to party with his friends. That's completely normal and unremarkable. I don't see a work-related problem with that.

I signed up. got an account. But every time I try check out someone's myspace, it asks for all my info all over again. If i clik on someone's photos or vids link, it asks for all my info. Most of the time it is un navigatable.
Most all other sites i '"belong to" remember my settings. My space does not. It's too buggy. and many myspace member pages crash my mac.

Kimo, if you got that far, you've "got a MySpace."
wow. Ryan. i mean wot da hell... why the...Sorry for omitting the gratuitious smiley. I'm just saying, you've posted several times that MySpace confounds you... to the point where it seems you're having more fun mocking it than having any real interest in using it. Which is, to be frank, not out of character. :) Hence, the "there goes the neighborhood" sentiment.
But if you're actually asking for help, I'll bite.
If you think MySpace is asking for your registration information over and over again, every time you visit, my only guess is that you're clicking on the overly emphasized "Register" or "Sign Up" form (which is positioned front and center every time you get an error message of some sort), rather than the sometimes hard-to-find "Member Login" form. You are correct in that it remains one of the most hideously designed sites on the web... though clearly the site's so "sticky," people are willing to jump through those hoops.
Rather than trying to "save" my credentials and suchlike, I just go to the MySpace main page to login prior to clicking any profile, private message, or other "inside" links.
As for the site messing with your 'puter, I use a Mac and a PC, and frankly, lots of MySpace pages are disaster areas regardless of platform.
Fortunately, at least, they've provided some greater controls over what bells and whistles you're exposed to, and what fancy do-dads people can post on your page. I thought animated GIFs were bad, but now folks are "commenting" with Flash video!
I'm no fan of MySpace, but sadly it's become the tool of choice for several friends for posting personal updates, pictures, videos, etc., so if I want to check in, that's where I gotta go. I also use it simply to emphasize that it's not the haven of evil some folks make it out to be. Though of course my presence there may in fact simply bolster such theories.

Myspace really has become a major meeting place and as with youtub,e a big part of promotion for bands and other "businesses".

I wish I "got" the popularity of MySpace. I've spent maybe one hour total perusing the pages available to those who don't want to register...like MOI! Most of the pages send my brain into circuit overload! I know, I know...not difficult, right?!
Kimo...if you didn't forget to confirm your registration, could it be a browser issue with you? The small amount of time I've spent on MySpace gave Safari fits...some pages did, not all. There have been a few pages that can't completely load. Paul Ogata's and the HT group page worked fine. Manoasurfer's didn't. Again, I've not registered (and don't plan to!) so I can't go to any links within a page.
Hmmm...maybe next year I'll be eating my words and will become a MySpace slut! :D

I think several firms and certainly a lot of music groups and artists get what myspace really is... a marketing site to hit a specific demographic... young people under 30.
Many up and coming bands and artists have a myspace presence and use that to inform their fans of upcoming concerts and music releases. I like the fact that I can sample and even download songs from artists I never heard of. If I only relied on radio for new music, I'd never get songs from artists such as The Rosebuds or Kika. For that one use alone, myspace is worth the price to set up.
I agree the interface is not very pretty especially when many users create pages with video and instant-on music streaming (I'm kind of guilty but keep the instant-on option to "off"). One key in managing your myspace, especially if you are popular (I'm certainly not), is to routinely clean out your comments section because I've seen pages where users have many comments with embedded flash files and whatever... which of course makes loading even on broadband sluggish. It would be wise to purge all of the comments on at least a monthly basis.

Aha! Now I get it! Thanks, Mel. Since I have no need to market anything to the masses and am more than double the demographics  no wonder MySpace doesn't make sense to me. I'd never heard of it until all of the pedophile news broke. That was my first and lasting impression of that site. And I'll admit to one raised eyebrow when Paul O. gave HT his link...altho' I did see his Irvine, CA gig listed and told my daughter about it! My eyebrow's back in place now, Paul, sagging closer and closer toward my eyelashes! :D

I guess it depends on the kind of business you are doing. Businesses targeting the young demo know that if they have a myspace presence and actively participate in it, they know they can get a response. The young age group are great consumers and good impulsive buyers.
I am sure all the music artists know this. They get people to concerts, people return to myspace, visit artist websites and tell them about their shows.
I know that the criminal factor has given myspace a bum rap, but then people just have to learn to be careful, especially teenagers (don't post too much personal information)..... and never fall for the IMs from total strangers, especially the ones that lead them on.
Of course law enforcement is keenly aware of myspace and they now have undercover cops on the space to catch sexual deviants. NBC's Dateline investigative news show has been following this by conducting their own undercover operations in conjuction with local law enforcement. Makes for interesting TV viewing when nothing else is on.
Getting back to the marketing aspect, I've seen radio stations and even the Hawaii Film Board with a myspace link. Plus NewsCorp (http://www.newscorp.com/index2.html) which owns myspace now have one of the hottest internet websites online. I don't know if they are making money, but I suspect they are.
The funny thing is that NewCorp also owns Fox Network and Fox News. :)

One key in managing your myspace, especially if you are popular (I'm certainly not), is to routinely clean out your comments section because I've seen pages where users have many comments with embedded flash files and whatever... which of course makes loading even on broadband sluggish. It would be wise to purge all of the comments on at least a monthly basis.
it's not just about marketing and selling tutu...
You would be very amazed at the amount of people truly on...
if you become a member... you can do a search of those people...(all ages that are members in just your area code....)
I did that for the 96826 (within 5 mile feature) area code (mccully area) and got nearly 30,000 people.... scared the cr*p out of me...
Then I started looking at the faces...and I was like...sheesh I see him at the store... I see her at the market...etc..... totally tripped me out...
but the best thing yet.... Is I have truly been looking for my two half brothers for more than 25 years....every search engine there is out there.... Through Myspace... I have reconnected w/ my two half brothers after 25 years!!!!
So in Conclusion...it's not just a place for marketing.... I think you would be amazed if you just did a high school search of the people from your own highschool possibly....
yeah... you get a couple years on me...and even for me to find some of my classmates from more than 20 years...took a little research...as many of them don't use there names...etc... however... I've hooked up w/ some of my class of 1987 graduates that I wouldn't have....
Another myspace story....
I was classmates w/ Adrian Klemm (Pro Football player got drafted from UH in the 2nd round to the patriots...now has 3 superbowl rings....etc...)
just recently.... one of his co-linemen at UH (Big Red) died just a few weeks ago...
It was reported in the Hawaii papers...however... He is now playing for the Packers and is in the middle of spring training....
I was able to pm him instantly through myspace about the unfortunes of his friend... in turn... he sent flowers to the funeral....
Had myspace not been around.... Adrian wouldn't have even known of the death of one his close friends until long after the funeral...and by then...he wouldn't have been able to send flowers to the funeral....
Sorry for ranting.....

I've never really used the search features much at myspace to find anyone in my age demo. I am way outside the target market so the chances of anyone I personally know except for my friend who's son is in an upcoming band is on it. But hey, perhaps I should try some of the zip code and high school searches just to see what pops.

I've been on MySpace since September 2003 and even had the opportunity to meet Mr. Tom himself the last couple of times he was in town.
My 10 year HS class reunion is next year, and MySpace has definitely made it easier for me and the committee to find our classmates. Reunion interest is already high, and had it not been for MySpace, I think we'd be way behind in reunion planning.
Unfortunately, it brings about a lot of drama...and that's why my profile's set to 14 years old and one needs my last name or my email to add me as a friend.

Manoa and Mel...
Thanx for the MySpace edumacation! It kinda sounds like a classmates.com situation with all MS members being from the same school! :D And, no, I've not joined classmates.com either...however...2 classmates of mine, currently residing on the Big Island, found each other on that site. After losing contact with one another for 39 years (they were an 'item' in high school), they married...sight unseen...3 months after their classmates.com reunion!
I guess perusing MySpace will be a retirement activity for me! I'd probably get totally engrossed in it which is not a good idea right now. I mean, a 7 day a week job and HT are already keeping me away from my favorite activity...the beach!

Serenity, one easy way now to find several HawaiiThreads.com users' profiles on MySpace is to start with the HawaiiThreads MySpace Group (http://groups.myspace.com/hawaiithreads). Click "View All Members (http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.viewMembers&groupID=103044733&adTopicID=8)," then visit the various profiles and click "Add As Friend."
Note, though, that some members require additional information to make the request (private e-mail address or last name) -- in which case you'll have to contact them separately if you don't know them personally.

I know everybody says, "I don't have anything to hide, so why should I care?" , but the NSA (http://www.alternet.org/blogs/themix/37344/#more) might just be combing your myspace blog to see who your "friends" are.
Also, you might want to tell your kids to be careful what they blog (especially if they are prone to flights of fancy or exaggeration regarding sexual conquests or acts of violence). Nowadays, potential employers are also mining spaces like Myspace to see if candidates have accounts and what they are saying. It might keep your kid from getting that $60k job, even if he tries to explain that he was "just joking".

My theory goes...
If your not doing anything wrong...what you got to hide? Don't add friends that you don't know or aren't family members...
and if you do know them...and them being a problem with future things... then don't add them... easy nuff.

From the article:Under the changes, expected to be announced Wednesday and taking effect next week, MySpace users who are 18 or over could no longer request to be on a 14- or 15-year-old's friends' list unless they already know either the youth's e-mail address or full name... However, users under 18 can still make such contact, and MySpace has no mechanism for verifying that users submit their true age when registering. That means adults can sign up as teens and request to join a 14-year-old's list of friends, which would enable the full profiles. So, basically ineffective, but like a lot of the changes put in place since the explosion in bad PR, it looks like they're doing something, which is what shareholders and the public want.
Even "restrictions" at other sites to limit alluse by minors can be circumvented, so there's no practical way MySpace can totally lock things down (and it sure ain't going to lock out the demographic that drives most of its success). I expect MySpace to do all it can to protect its users (of any age), but ultimately, no technology is a replacement for good parenting.

If you're still dense enough to be using Internet Explorer, and if you don't keep your Windows install updated, visiting MySpace may have gotten you infected (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2006/07/myspace_ad_served_adware_to_mo.html) with spyware. It's an old exploit, but comes in the form of a fake image file, and thus can be pushed at millions via any large ad network.
This comes out less than a day after MySpace scrambled to fix a Flash-based worm (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2006/07/myspace_pages_defaced_using_fl.html).

Um. You two aren't MySpace Friends, are you?
FWIW, the malware reported above has nothing to do with Bulletins, comments, notes, pings, winks, or whatever the heck MySpace calls the various ways its members contact and interact with each other. The first came via one of the many obnoxious ads served across the site, the latter anywhere Flash is used (i.e. in videos).
Keep your systems up to date, use Firefox (or anything but Internet Explorer), and disable as many fancy wingdings as possible (you can, for example, stop people from posting graphics or HTML whatnots on your page). Even then, MySpace is so hideously implemented I'm sure something will break the site and/or your computer every so often.
The draw of the site is impossible to understate, considering what people put up with to use it!

What's interesting is this newstory is datelined Kaneohe!
"...The Marine Corps MySpace profile — featuring streaming video of barking drill sergeants, fresh recruits enduring boot camp and Marines storming beaches — underscores the growing importance of the Internet to advertisers as a medium for reaching America's youth.
"That's definitely the new wave," said Gunnery Sgt. Brian Lancioni at a Hawaii recruiting event. "Everything's technical with these kids, and the Internet is a great way to show what the Marine Corps has to offer."

Yesterday and today one of my friends kept posting bulletins advertising sites that had MySpace layouts. A few weeks ago, another friend kept leaving obscene bulletins with redirects to a porn site.
Turns out they were phishing victims whose emails and passwords were received after they logged into phony MySpace login pages.
If you're prompted to login again after you've already done so, always always always make sure that it really is a MySpace login page.
Some examples are:
http://home.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user
http://search.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=find
Note that the main part of the URL is "home.myspace.com"
The following are NOT Myspace URL's.
http://home.myspace.tk.com/index.cfm?useaction=user
http://home.myspace.alfalpha.com/index.cfm?useaction=user
http://home.mayspace.com/index.cfm?useaction=user
http://homemyspace.com/index.cfm?useaction=user
http://204.27.18.9/index.cfm?useaction=user
http://rnyspace.com (this one was really sneaky!)
Upgrading to Flash 9 should help you not get phished in the future, but still make sure to check the URLs. :)

However, I did learn the following:
"MySpace now attracts more page views than both Hotmail and Google.
MySpace is growing by more than 75,000 members a day.
MySpace has gone from 0 to 27 million members in a just over two years."
http://www.wirenh.com/Features/Cover_Stories/MySpace_in_YourTown_20050928768.html
75,000 thats fricking pretty incredible!
Someone else mentioned that it might be like a friendster thing...
just one fact on Friendster...don't know how recent it was...just a quick google...
"Friendster has about 20 million members with profiles"
http://gatornet.chapin.edu/~NHZ/LAB.html
So I can see that there are some comparison's... however, I never had a friendster account. So I'm not all that hip either I guess....
And I only joined Myspace about 3 months ago... and because of it... I found my two long lost half brothers that I had spent nearly 25 years looking for on other online search engines.

Real reason I gots no MySpace? Too busy with other stuff --- or just too lazy to bother setting it all up!

I also have a myspace page. :o I have been so lucky to find some of my really good friends from high school on here. It is wonderful to be able to see how they are doing. I enjoy going on myspace and leaving messages on my friends pages and posting new pictures. I am no longer one of those people who is on myspace all day long.... thanks to my work... they blocked access to the site. LOL Lately I've noticed that the site is frequently down for special maintenance, which can be very frustrating. Here is my page if you want to check it out. Don't be scared now. ;)

That's funny because when we used to have access to myspace at my work you would see half of my coworkers on throughout the day. Then we would leave each other comments like, "hey get back to work". It's a good thing we don't have access anymore because I can actually focus on my work now.

A bunch of my friends at an undisclosed State agency ;) found a way to access MySpace via proxy server.
The only downside is that photos show up as Red X's and they're unable to post comments or bulletins.
They can still read messages and approve comments and such.

Auntie Lynn :o
Auntie,
The same thing happened to me last week. I couldn't get a hold of Tom either, so I posted a question in the MySpace Support Forum. I was told that it was partly due to the recent MySpace outages and that a lot of people had their pages messed up too. I left it alone for a few hours and after that it was back to normal.
The people in that forum are actually pretty helpful! True, they're not Tom, but at least you'll get help and a reply almost ASAP!
How exactly is your page messed up?

Prior to the creation of MySpace, Tila Nguyen was pretty big on Asian Avenue as well. In fact, if you were an import model who liked to show skin, guarantee your page got choke hits. Kaila Yu, HeatherLyn, Christine Mendoza, Francine Dee all come to mind.
My friend Kara (http://www.myspace.com/karanavarro) has been modeling [import/print] for several years now despite her youth. Things have taken a backseat to motherhood recently but she's learning how to balance the two. This is what I call beautiful. [Not like I'm biased or anything] ;)

hooooboy! are you a youn un. I have been on the internet active since it began as a pop mass thang. and have seen custom personal web pages of all degrees of uglee-ocity for too many years. before myspace, there was years of very messy cluttered personal sites.
(can ya imagine this? ....
in 1993, when the WWW was very much in its infancy, there were 600 www sites. (and about 5000 newsgroups)
In 1994, there were ten thousand web sites. and as many newsgroups too.
In 1995, there was about 100,000 web sites.
(I wager, mine was about the 50 thousanth web site.)
so 'surfing' (or wading in murky territory, as dialup was then...) the internet back in the day, afforded us all a view of every manner of junk for years up to the day myspace and their ilk boomed, exploding the self expression justified visual pollution WW web part of the internet.
Myspace just made it a little easier for EVERYone to have their own site and clutter it up even MORE with the ugliest messiest visually nonsensical wallpaper and in yer face pics all on top of each other with too much sound noise and musick blasting out.
Heck go look his.... It's empty...
for good reason. and basically, so is my youtube 'channel". with the exception of seventy plus vids of varying consequence.

I find it amusing when people say... "I made a web site...its www.myspace.***"
I laugh and I say... No... you posted to someone elses website! Then they said... no... it's my page... I'm like...whatevers!
Why do people that have myspace accounts all of sudden think they know how to make a web site?

Funny how famous he is. Even those who have no interest in the Adult scene know who Ronnie is. He came into town one day and asked me to carry his bag...I said no.

Dang... I was pushing different buttons when I first joined myspace...
All of a sudden I looked at the Schools function on myspace and I'm designated as HawCC's Moderator on myspace....
The only thing I saw that I was able to control was the message board there...anyone else been selected as a moderator?
http://schools.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=schools&schoolID=5901&showalum=1&MyToken=a6871c3c-07dd-47c6-8650-39958a202c32
anyone else know what value this has in myspace??? new to me? (it will probably be gone by the time anyone presses this link)

Hey guys, my profile was just fine last night...and then this morning I noticed my navigation bar in my profile was a weird shade of blue. I clicked on 'HOME' and it took me to an error page, but it looks like it would have taken me to a fake login page had it worked (it was a script of some sort). Sure enough, I saw a bulletin about this, and when I went into my profile...the nasty crap was in there.
There is a nasty virus going around at the moment and if on your page its coming up with that active x box and/or your tool bar is highlighted, you've got it.
This is how you get rid of it. Please pass this on to your friends that have it and when you go to their page dont click okay on that box. You'll get it again. Keep checking your profile from time to time to see if it comes back, thats what I've been doing. Its such a pain in the butt.
There is now another myspace virus up on myspace again, it creates a fake nav bar that redirects you to an off site to steal your password.
First, when it asks you to login, make sure at the top in the address bar it says .. before you even type anything in. To remove the virus, first go to the bottom of your About Me section, and remove the part that is red.
It goes down more, it should be from that point all the way down remove it.

Also in your movies section remove...
http://spanky.aonservers.com/uploader/files/1/movies.jpg
Save your profile and try to stay off others until the virus has been removed.
............and if you see posts that you have not posted CHANGE PASSWORD ASAP!!!! (you should do this often just in case)

Thanks for the links, Glen.
Luckily I was able to catch it early. I make it a point to change my password regularly and I never click on suspicious links in people's bulletins...so it makes sense that no matter how careful I try to be, just visiting an infected profile was enough to do it for me!
People are so quick to use whatever custom layouts they can find out there on the web and oftentimes they don't even know what the heck they're putting in there when they edit. I'll admit I'm no .css pro, but I try to make sure to not include anything that doesn't belong there.

First the SPAM bulletins, then the SPAM comments, and now the SPAM messages! GRR! I can't stand it!
Do these people have no lives that they sit around all day creating these programs just to piss people off?

If you think its bad being on the user end, try being the owner. 808blogs got hit by hit by a similar spam attack. It took me countless hours to find the exploits and patch them. Not to mention the time spent tracking down compromised database rows and writing regexps to search out and fix the rows. In the end the few legit users I had left. Haven't been able to get any users back since.

Damn their souls, spammers are mighty innovative in their ability to find and exploit flaws, and to continually move ahead of all the quarantines and blockers.
I think we should hire them all to work Homeland Security jobs. Get them to find every hole in our infrastructure, so they can be fixed before someone with more malicious intent finds them.

Sometimes my body feels that old. It was kind of done as an inside joke the AF and I have going on.
In actuality, I am at the ripe ol age of 29.

Why did you create your myspace page?
How long have you had it up?
Is it private or public? Did you have to change it from public to private?
Have you had any encounters with "bad people"?
How much of what you share is true? How much of it false?
Do you think someone can really get to know you via your myspace page?
Do you share anything that people would consider risque?
Would you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert in real life?
