View Full Version : Cheap, Thrifty, Pricey

I got this subject off an elderly lady I was speaking to at work so here it is: When you need something for your house such as food or whatever it is you need are you "CHEAP THRIFTY or PRICEY?"
CHEAP meaning you don't want to buy the item you need instead find ways to get what you want without spending money even if it is broken and barely works
THRIFTY meaning you don't want to spend a lot of money, so you look in the papers for deals or you go to the local thrift shops or Wal mart (which is GREAT shopping)for the things you need.
PRICEY meaning you buy only brand names and quality items that are over priced, kind of how the yoga mama's buy brand names that cost a hundred dollars just for their babies, who don't know the difference.
Me I find myself somewhere in the middle. THRIFTY! :D

Since I don't do any of the food buying, when I shop for a new toy, I check the internet and go price comparison shopping.
But my Mom is thrifty, because she shops at Sam's Club and gets a tub of salad dressing and the large kine bag of salad, along with other supersized things. My Dad is cheap. He puts off things to the last minute, or salvages things from his worksite (cabinets, mirrors, toilets, all the way to water heaters and sometimes cinder blocks).

Hmmm...I'm definitely not pricey and I'm definitely not cheap. Trashy, maybe, but not cheap! :D I guess I'm thrifty by default! Shopping is my least favorite thing to do, be it groceries or clothes, cars or computers. I am, however, looking forward to my condo remodel. I'm currently shopping for an air conditioner and a toilet. Life is glamorous!

D) all of the above. And it depends on the situation.
As far as being thrifty goes, my natural tendency is to hunt a bargain and I rarely buy on impulse, because spontaneous shopping is nowhere near as fun as stalking an item, studying its going market rate, and getting da bugga for much cheaper!
In terms of pricey, the old adage is applicable in certain circumstances: cheaper is not always less expensive. Some brands are completely worth it. Some retailers are worth my support. And certain products have additional intangible valuesthat makes me ignore the price.
I am cheap when it comes to consumables. Toilet paper, laundry/bath/dish soaps, etc...its all going down the drain anyway. I might like a certain brand, but I love my wallet more. ;)

Hey, might as well go for the gusto and get a bidet (http://www.pablo.dk/marine/tecma/tecma%20indbygget%20bidet%20wws.jpg). :D

To be honest... I'm cheap. I can be kind of a MacGyver to get the most life out of things. If I must buy something I'll hunt for the "cheap"est place.

Ya know what? My place is so small, if I can figure out how get that thing to multi-task as a toilet/bidet/shower/whirlpool bath/sink/washing machine/dishwasher/blender/food processor I may create enough space to invite a guest over for dinner! ;)

Good grief, tutu, might as well just jump in the ocean. :p

Like that commecial where the woman gives her elderly husband a vegetable smoothie made in the kitchen sink's garbage disposer.
I'm in the final stages of completely remodeling my condo, doing most of the work myself, except for a few plumbing repairs that require a licensed contractor. In that sense, you can call me CHEAP. I've probably saved 10's of thousands of dollars on labor alone by doing this. In return, I've had the liberty of being PRICEY in the selection of materials for the job. But still, I opted for materials that were THRIFTY, as the devils (or angels?) on my "cheap" side prevailed.
So in sum of those parts, you can say I'm PRACTICAL.

Oh wait...it's supposedly very safe where I live. Of course, no testing. Then, again, government tends to ignore the Waianae Coast...even in the aftermath of Iniki. :(

PRACTICAL! I like that! Yah...a beet/carrot/apple smoothy made in my new, multi-purpose bidet! :D
BTW...when you finish with your place I'll hire ya to remodel mine. Dang...the economy's good. No one's available for 'small jobs'. I've already decided to splurge in a couple of areas and be frugal in others...to justify the splurges! I guess 'practical' falls somewhere between thrifty and pricey!

I can install most lighting & plumbing fixtures, pre-fab kitchen & bath cabinets, sheet/vinyl/ceramic tile and laminate flooring. But ask me to prep and paint? Forget it! I have major arguments with the brush and roller. :D
Just a suggestion to anyone remodeling a condo or apartment: STORE EVERYTHING. All your furniture. All your personal stuff. Box it and store it. I made the mistake of trying work around all our CRAP.. and it really hindered progress. It's worth the money in time and labor to just store it, whether it's cheap, thrifty or pricey (hey, I'm still on-topic!).
I'll share photos after we finish furnishing and decorating.

Yep! I'm looking at a total move out. It's pretty difficult to work around 400 sq. ft. filled with furniture! I've started cleaning out closets and cupboards...
...hmmm...a teen guy decided to walk out of the ocean nekkid in front of my condo!
...now...where was I? :D
As I was saying...I'm into a major spring cleaning, paring down, weeding out. It pays to be practical in addition to cheap, thrifty and pricey!

What color were his eyes?
Probably a bit blood shot and glassy. There was a group of 'em that seemed to be having a bit too much fun!
His underwear was white. That's what he finally put on when he walked along the the sand next to our property line.

CHEAP doesn't mean FREE. You must stick with "Stripshow Protocol" and get those dollar bills out. :p.
