Aloha! I'll be in Honolulu soon (mid-May) and I was wondering if I need to bring some long sleeve shirts and pants. Does it get chilly in the morning and evening? Or one can get by with t-shirt and shorts throughout the day? Should I bring an umbrella as well? :)

Bring the pants and it wouldn't hurt to bring a small umbrella for just in case.

First off... If you wish to stay dry all the time than an umbrella works well. We get frequent though mostly short-lived rainshowers. Next, on whether or not for long sleeves? Us that have become acclimated to Hawai'i, seem to need warmer wear than others that have just arrived. To each his/her own eh?!

You gotta be kiddin! This is Hawaii you wear in May what you wear all year long. It's hot, it's humid. But lately...yes bring an umbrella because for some reason Hawaii is getting a bit of a drenching.

But if you're a guy here are the essentials:

1) Board shorts
2) Khaki shorts
3) Khaki Docker's long pants
4) Decent Polo shirt
5) A pair of your favorite sneakers

You can buy a ton of "I been to Hawaii" t-shirts at the swap meets here for about five for $20 so leave your "I Luv Minnasota" T-shirt at home.

If you're a gal here are the essentials:

1) Killer swimsuit

Hmmm...that should do it :D

I been here since early March. Only shorts and polo / T- shirts, so far. Had to buy an aloha shirt for wedding, but I no mo long pants, so I going wear shorts (hey !! My niece said it was casual).

Except for a few early mornings when I had to throw a sheet over my legs, I been sleeping in only shorts.

Sadly, my thong bikini still in my suitcase (I don't know if it's killer kind). Bacteria count scare me . . . you know. All my friends are so disappointed that dey not going get pitchers.

Hmmm bacteria count and thong. Not a good combination of words as we all know where that little string rides up against ;)

Okay for those mainlanders who need to differentiate between "Local" style of what is considered formal and casual:

Formal:
Mainland - Tuxudeo
Hawaii - Kahala or Reyn Spooner button down aloha print dress shirt

Casual:
Mainland - Dress or Polo Shirt
Hawaii - Your best Crazy Shirt (da one wit no puka's unda da armpit)

Oh and don't for get what Hawaii considers Formal for footwear...Da brand spankin' new Scott slippahs you nevah wen wea yet cuz you waitin' for dat special occasion ;) Eh who wen wea my Scott slippahs and wen leave em in da rain? An no take em to da beach! Dis for going Ala Moana Foodcourt for dinner!

if you have a chance to read this before you get on the plane:

-take a sweat jacket or two just in case. All the bldgs in HNL crank up their ACs as if electricity was free. :)

-Hawai'i is within the tropic zone; the strength of the sun's rays is much stronger than anything you are used to. Bring a hat, sunscreen (everyone has their favorite brand; I only use baby formulas 50+spf) and a couple of long-sleeved gauzey shirts. White is best; they will reflect rays moreso than any colored shirt can.

-consider your itinerary; how long do you actually expect to be outdoors vs indoors? If you can, stay under cover between 10-3p. You don't want to be like so many tourists who end up in the emergency room from really bad sun stroke.

I arrived here on Friday. So far it's been quite nice. There are some trade winds - which I find quite refreshing. I've worn my chinos mainly in the evening and only short-sleeve shirts, t-shirts, and even an Aloha shirt :)

Anyway, great to be in Hawaii. Very lovely!!!!

I pay $350 per month for electricity here on the Big Island, and I don't even use an AC! It's outrageous here and HELCO wants to raise it up another 17%?

When I saw my electric bill one fine day, I had to call when I asked them, "Is this a mistake? I saw this monthly consumption of 1,170 Kw/h. I told my UH/Hilo Freshman math wizard kid to acknowledge my conversion to 1.17 Megawatts per month of usage. He nodded and went back to play his shoot em up in the head video game on his laptop.

I called Helco and demanded my meter be pulled and tested. When the results came in they called me and said it was fast but not remarkably fast...about 12% fast. WHAT? I told them I believe the PUC allows something like a maximum of +5% Error on metering. At the Gas Company we never let a meter out with an error factor of over +0.5% error. I guess they never thought I worked for a Public Utility before.
