  • If you could live anywhere in Waikiki...

    where would that be?

I'm moving to Oahu in October and am looking for tips on buildings in Waikiki to help narrow my apartment search. I'm a 28 year old single male. I'd like to find a building with a larger population of local-tenants than vacation renters, is well kept and has a cool atmosphere/culture. I'm pretty flexible on rent and I work from home so please post whatever comes to mind. Address, building name, etc. would be appreciated.

I can't help you, Zin. But, if I could live anywhere, in Waikiki, I'd chose either inside the Honolulu Zoo, or inside the Diamond Head crater.

Oh, this isn't a fantasy thread, my bad.

There is an apartment building within Hilton Hawaiian Village, true you may find vacation renters, but I knew of a few people who lived there that were local. It will probably be expensive.

make sure its in a building high up at least 100-200 feet above the ground.when the tsunami hits you may have a chance up high though the building may collapse.when the volcano on the canary islands explodes sending mountains into the atlantic the whole eastern seaboard of the us will be underwater.when the volcanos and earthquakes in cali and alaska go most of the islands will be underwater.
kind of like waterworld meets the day after tomorrow.

Nah...it was a second marriage. I remember Jack Lord, and that hair of his, blowing over his face.

So, boowa...how about a 'real' conversation? Any topic you like...you choose.

Gee...You're outa luck, there. I'm an old, fat, whiskered, unshaven Haole lady. I have four unruly children, and I drive a camper. Our streets smell of pee, and are full of dog-poop...we do have a street-sweeper, but he's slightly...well, let's just say that he's missing some of the ham, in his sandwich. I still walk barefoot (can't take the girl out of Hawaii), and have flat feet...very dirty flat feet. Kissing my tootsies reminds me of when the dog tries the same thing...yuck!

                  Maybe another topic?

The French women do all seem to be thin...and hard. I'm afraid of them.

I don't know about Paris, but Biarritz is quite gay, especially down by the (phallic-shaped) lighthouse, where they all hang out. We're not too far from Biarritz, way down here, in the SW corner, right up against the Pyrenees. If I didn't live down in a valley, I'd be able to see Spain, from here.

No Prince Charming, over here, for me...only the French version of uncouth redneck farmers...inbred for centuries, they are.

Actually, before Bush, the French secretly admired the Americans, and coveted their lifestyle, too. Nowadays, the US is treated like a bad joke, it's true. Bush IS kind of a hick, you gotta admit.

I don't know about Ron Howard, I haven't had a TV in twenty years. Wasn't he that cute kid, with the freckles, in Mayberry? I guess that he's all grown up, by now.

Um...they didn't actually get to the point, where they lost the war, with Germany, last time...or even the time before. I'm German, by birth, and take a sort of delight, when my neighbors scream at me, to go back to Bush, telling them, "it's worse than that...I'm German!".

I'm waiting for the knock on the door, in the middle of the night, for when they come to get me. There's an old WW2 relic of a concentrtion camp, just down the road, and my neighbor actually has one of the huts from there, in her garden. It looks just the the one in Hogan's Heros.

No Algerians in this small French town. The only 'etrangers', here, are the English, who snapped up all the cheap houses, and are now hated, because the greedy French can't afford to buy homes, anymore.

Take a peek, at this place, where I live. Just put your mouse on the thing, and it goes round and round...don't go too fast, though, or you'll get all dizzy, and fall out of your chair. www.rogerhallett.com

I am lmao at the tangent this thread has taken.

As for Waaaaaaaiiiiiiikiki (oh how I love that song), I would love to live in the building above KHON TV. Great views. Ala Moana Shopping Center right next door. Who needs a car if you live there?

I live in Waikiki, and while I can't recommend any building there in particular, I definitely like living closer to the Ala Moana end, prior to where Kalakaua splits into Kuhio and Kalakaua. Otherwise, it's a real pain to make it to your apartment when they close down the streets for parades or block parties.

Re: If you could live anywhere in Waikiki...

I used to live in a low walk-up at the corner of Paoakalani and Kuhio. Noisy (thanks to the buses), always in the shadow of one of the nearby high-rises (not always a bad thing on a hot day), and packed with "interesting" neighbors. But, it was cheap (at the time), I was young and stupid then, and loved it.

It was at the "zoo end" of Waikiki, so we were close to good bus lines (of course), the zoo (natch), Kapiolani Park, the aquarium, and of course the beach, and within walking distance of the whole of the tourist Mecca. The two biggest downsides were parking (always a battle) and groceries -- we'd have to drive somewhere, if we didn't want to pay tourist prices at the Handy Pantry.

And yeah, getting blocked in or out because of a parade was a bummer, too.

There are lots of nice buildings in Waikiki, actually... security, central air, parking, pool, spa, gym, and other ameneties. But those are so way out of my price range, I never even looked!
