  • Returning to Honolulu :)

I am already planning my return in Waikiki for next year, most possibly during the xmas holidays of 2007. The reason why then ? Well I wanna see the surf competitions at Pipeline. i wanna see the BIG MOFO WAVES LOL... any one knows when those competitions are held ? is there a fee to watch... thx for any info you can give me. Damn.. i have to say i want to see those MOFO sharks again at Halaweia (sp) LOL

They hold 'em whenever the waves show up. The waves don't care about peoples' schedules.

Well, to be sure, there is a lot of scheduling going on, and often, a lot of conflicts between several contests and events wanting to use the same beach at the same time.

But yeah, basically, for the "big wave contests," the schedules are placeholders. If the waves don't meet a certain standard, they don't happen. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is famous, in part, because it actually only happens once every few years because of this:
The contest, which requires waves of at least 30 feet, has been held only five times since it was created in 1986, the last time in 2002.
I don't think there are any fees to watch, but getting there will be a challenge. The traffic is horrendous and the crowds sometimes overwhelming.

In general, the North shore gets big in the Winter when there is a North Swell.

So, hardcore surfers usually live there in the Winter months. The less hard core either have someone monitoring the swell activity or they monitor it themselves. When it gets big, they just jump on a plane.

As stated prior by the local boys, a contest occurs when the waves get to be a certain quality. Some places cannot be surfed when it gets too big and some only can be surfed when it gets big. Let's throw in swell direction and period to satisfy the techno-surfers as well.

        Hope that helps

Lucy, I'm glad you have a friend in Aunty Lynn. Has your original question about surf contests been satisfactorily answered?
