Just when I thought Corndogs and Andadogs were a double artery attack, this burger looks to top it.

Deep-Fried Cheese Sticks still amaze me at who would think of such madness.

Dear lord. All the heart-stopping sin of a bacon burger, plus a disgusting, sticky Krispy Kreme pastry? Absolutely brilliant in a ridiculous and somewhat frightening way. I mean, sweet and salty is a well-known taste combination... but this is a heck of a way to get there.

Interesting in how the low-fat, low-carb, diet-craze of the last decade and a half is not only receding, but even inspiring a backlash. That is, an emphatic and deliberate attempt by some restaurants to capture the "over the edge of excess" market. Burger King's "Eat Like a Man" campaign, Carl's Jr. horrifying Paris Hilton car wash/burger chomping ad... Whew.

I remember seeing that on TV and just going "NO." Krispy Kreme donuts are way too sweet for me to handle most times. I can eat one but anymore sickens me...couldn't stomach it as a burger bun at all. I'm not much for those combinations to begin with. I remember watching Secret Life of... and they had that fried chicken and waffles meal that people loved...I shuddered.

I don't know what's worse sugar glaze with the hamburger pattie or mustard, ketsup or secert sauce on a donut.

My heart slowed down just looking at te picture.

To the person who winced at Chicken and Waffles....Don't knock it til you try it. Here in LA there are a few Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle joints and they are always packed. I tried it once out of curiousity...It was pretty good.

Think about that McGriddle breakfast sandwich at McDonalds....talk about a heart attack... A breakfast sandwich with 2 syrup injected pancakes as the bun...Yikes !

Recently after a morning of boogie bording at Manhattan Beach, me and the fam went to the Kettle, a diner right in town. They had a burger on the menu called the KONA BURGER....Grilled Pineapple and melted swiss on a burger with teriyaki sauce....Being that it had a Hawaiian name, of course I ordered it...It was the most amazing burger I've had in I don't know how long.
For those of you on here wh are ever in the LA area...I recommend this place for that burger alone.

Pleh, I'm just not into the savory + sweet thing aside from maybe spareribs with pineapples. If I just accidentally get syrup on my bacon or something I don't feel like eating it anymore. I don't even eat ham and pineapple pizza. I'm all for trying before brushing off but...see... I'm not even going to try this bacon burgnut w/ glazed cheese thing.

I can totally see this thing working. There used to be a Krispy Kreme (it only had the name, it wasn't really) in the Aiea Shopping Center when I was in intermediate school. Didn't last long. But they sold this hot dog in a long-john (minus the custard) and it was delightful.

This isn't too big a step from using sweet bread rolls for hamburgers or for tuna sandwiches -- something I do all the time. Sure, it's no good for you, but you're not going to eat them every day. I'd pay good money to try this once, I tellya.

Pineapple Teriyaki Burgers are pretty common here in the islands. Most burger joints got 'em under various island-themed names. Actually, TIKIYAKI BURGER would be the perfect name for one!

If you like that flavor and you like chicken, try this SUPAH' EASY and ONO...

Shoyu Chicken recipe:
- 5 lbs. chicken pieces (breasts or thighs), thawed
For Pineapple-Shoyu Mixture, combine equal parts:
- 8 oz. (small can) Ready-to-drink 100% Pineapple Juice
- 1 cup Shoyu
- 1 cup Sugar
In large pot, brown the chicken in a little oil then simply pour the Pineapple-Shoyu mixture in and simmer on medium-low until chicken is fully cooked and falling-apart tender. Turn and stir occasionally. Enjoy with rice.
*Optional: Add diced pineapple and chopped garlic and/or ginger for extra flavor.

Another quadruple heart-attack has to be the Chicken-Fried Steak with butter & cream-based White Gravy poured on it.. Whoah!

Anyone game for a Leonard's Malasada Burger? Nickname it "Da' Slidah".

Yes, the TIKIYAKI moniker is something I came up with and had all kinds of food related ideas for. It's what I call my special bbq sauce which usually consists of a potpurri (mish mosh) of bbq sauce, sweet and sour sauce, chinese duck sauce, and somthing spicy....usually chinese hot crushed pepper thing my fiance gets in the Asian supermarket (she's from Taiwan)....sometimes I'll add crushed pineapple and even mandarin orange, and some sort of teriyaki or soy sauce too....it's a whole mix it, taste it,add something else, taste it process....in the end, it's tangy, sweet, spicy.

The I brush it on while bbq-ing chicken, and keep brushing it on.

That pineapple shoyu sounds good...what exactly is shoyu ?

I will try it.

With regards to the KONA Burger in question, I think it's the quality of the beef and the grill it was cooked on that made the difference. Some restaurants have amazing flame broilers that really sear the meat amazingly. Plus when you grill the pineapple it takes on a whole different flavor...

A little off topic...there is a place called the Aloha Grill in Huntington Beach (CA) that makes these chicken wings they call "Hawaiian Drums". They're made with a cherry flavored Char Siu sauce, which is the red sauce that chinese restaurants use on their classic spare ribs. They broil these chicken wings and serve it scallions and pineapple bits, and the are the BEST chicken wings I've even eaten. The place is an hour away from me and I've taken trips down there just to have these wings.

Man, now you got me talkin about food, and I wont stop unless you tell me to :-O

:DWish I could, but Oahu currently doesn't have a Krispy Kreme; only Maui. Although, I suppose any fresh-baked glazed doughnut would suffice.

I really like my LEONARD'S MALASADA BURGER idea.... "DA' SLIDAH!"

Don't say soy sauce around me, or I'll have to beat you. Man, I hate going places and they ask if I want "soy sauce." It sounds... wrong.

They had a skit on SNL a few months back where the character went to a Japanese Sushi restraunt and was acting like he was in the know and during it he called it shoyu and said that's how they say it in Japan. I was like, hey... a mainlander said it.. on TV. Awesome.

I'm willing to bet Scrivener made that himself. Some school faculty brought some Krispy Kreme Donuts from Maui, which gave him the reason to (and a guilty conscience if he didn't) do it. :D

Witness to the side what looks like, yes, a HOT DOG on a French Pastry Roll... ha ha! Looks like Redondo's (red) Winners.

One of them Pastry Dogs got the cheese goin' on.. YUM!

Diggin' the lightly toasted "tops" of the Krispy Kreme "buns". Guess you have to invert them like that, otherwise the glaze would get all over your hands when you hold the burger.

I was so intrigued by this Krispy Kreme business that I just had to give it a try. I mean, for all this discussion we've had, nobody has stepped up and asked, "How hard can it be to make something like this in my own kitchen?" So I asked it, and then one crazy night I picked up the ingredients and gave it a try.

This project was totally inspired not only by manoasurfer's thread, but by Pomai's killer andadogs photo-essay, which if you ask me is the post of the year so far. Props.

First, I assembled most of the ingredients:

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/hamburger1.jpg

Allow me to indulge myself as I discuss my decision-making here.

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/hamburger1a.jpg

Of course there are no Krispy Kreme stores on Oahu, and even if I could have gotten a Maui doughnut, I don't know if it would have suited me, being close to a full day old in all probability. So I went to Liliha Bakery, where the glazed doughnuts are delicious, if quite a bit smaller than those at Krispy Kreme. While I was there, I picked up two glazed twists for hot dogs and one blueberry muffin for munching while I cooked.

I'm not a huge fan of yellow mustard, but what else could one use for a project like this? It turned out I just had enough left in the bottle for this one last project. Heinz is the only ketchup I use, at least until I find something not sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Heinz is thicker than other brands, with a definite brown-sugar or molasses taste I prefer. Behind the ketchup is my pepper-grinder, and behind that my salt-tub. I keep my kosher salt in a big plastic jar that lets me get whole handsful if I want them (as when I boil pasta). And don't forget: Too many paper towels.

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/hamburger3.jpg

The lettuce is a mix of spring greens, one of those packaged salads that cost too much but are almost worth the price for all the time they save. The cheese is freshly-grated Tillamook extra-sharp. I'm no snob when it comes to cheese, but I don't buy grated cheese unless it's a really, really good deal. I've been to the Tillamook factory, by the way, and it was my favorite thing in all of Oregon except skiing.

That's ground sirloin, and those are Oscar Mayer Premium Weiners. I wanted something with a lot of flavor, so although those cheaper hot dogs are just fine with me most of the time, they usually get covered with condiments and sauerkraut. A more flavorful hot dog would let me really taste the dog and doughnuts for a more honest evaluation.

By the way, that green plate is my favorite dining plate now. I love having my main dish and sides right next to each other! A rectangular plate makes SO much more sense! It was just a few bucks at the Marukai store.

Cooking should be an activity, not just something you do so you can eat. That's why I had the blueberry muffin, and of course you gotta have something to take sips from while you're waiting for things to heat up. I picked this reisling up on a trip to Virginia, on my way to Cooperstown for the induction ceremony for George Brett, Nolan Ryan, and Robin Yount, and decided this was as good a time as any to finally pop it open. You're not supposed to let whites age too much, but this was just fine, 'though a little sweeter than semi-dry, if you ask me.

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/hamburger5.jpg

I cut the doughnuts and split the glazed twists. The twists were something of a challenge, as they wanted to unwind on me. These were going to be some messy hot dogs.

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/hamburger6.jpg

I never know what I'm going to throw into my hamburger until I get to that moment. Again, I wanted something flavorful but not overwhelming, so here's salt, pepper, onions, macadamia nut oil (I was out of olive oil), yellow mustard powder, and some dried marjoram.

(continued, next post)

The doughnuts were small, so I made small, thick patties. Mmmmmm...look at those bits of onion!

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/hamburger8.jpg

Aaaaaand a few minutes later, we have hamburgers!

http://www.mitchellkdwyer.net/images/doughnuthamburger.jpg

Yes, I inverted the doughnut halves, since that's what I'd seen on the news report about the Krispy Kreme hamburgers. I don't really think it makes a difference -- this is messy food either way. Okay, the reason I went with two hamburgers and two hot dogs is that I was really skeptical about the mustard and ketchup part of those meals interacting with the glazed doughnuts. I wasn't worried about the meat and doughnut, but man...who puts ketchup and mustard on a glazed pastry? *shudder*

First up: Hamburger with cheese, lettuce, ketchup, and mustard. The verdict: Any hope I might have had of the doughnut and burger blending together to form some great new taste sensation were immediately dashed. This was definitely a hamburger on a doughnut. The hamburger was very good, and the doughnut was very good, but were they good together? They weren't bad! The ketchup and mustard didn't really influence the doughnut, because as I chewed and swallowed, all I could think was that I was eating a hamburger and a doughnut at the same time, so of course this would taste like that.

Next: Hamburger with just cheese and lettuce. It was really about the same as the other burger. Tasty. A nice novelty, but not something I'd go out of my way for again. If I were hungry and I happened upon a kiosk selling these, I'd get one, but I wouldn't rather have had either of these burgers than the same patties on good sesame-seed or sweet-bread buns.

Now, the hot dogs were a different story. The first one, with just ketchup and mustard, was actually quite good! This tasted like more than just a hot dog on a glazed doughnut -- it actually seemed to go well together! I wished I'd put some sauerkraut on it, actually, or some sauteed onions. I might not go out of my way to make another hamburger on a doughnut, but I can certainly see myself making this again!

I don't know if it was just that I was sick of food already or what, but that last one was tough to get down. This was the dog with just cheese. Lemme say that the cheese did not go nicely with the glazed doughnut, and I suppose that's not much of a surprise. This was the worst of the four experiments.

So, what have I got to say for myself? Mostly that I'm going vegetarian for a few days, if not weeks, and there's no really good way to explain this experience other than to say that it was fun, and the only way for anyone else to know what it's like is to try it, because I have a feeling others' impressions would vary a great deal.

Hellbent: I think if the oil is hot enough, it seals the chocolate in, so even if it melts, it doesn't melt fast enough to "get away from" the rest of the candy bar. The hot oil will "seal" the chocolate onto the bar before it can melt away.

Does that make sense the way I wrote it?

They tried this on Food Network's Ham on a Street once after a segment on deep fried ice cream. Basically, it didn't work, nor did it taste very good according to the tasters (I guess all the ingredients aside from the original ice cream just soaked up oil). They tried it on a chocolate candy bar and a fudgesicle among other things, but neither melted. Right away, that is. The crunchy cereal coating didn't stick but kept it from totally melting and dissolving in the oil but several seconds after coming out of the oil, they starting melting.

Sensei Scrivener, that was a fun read in an "Oh man, I can't believe you did that!" kinda' way. Great photos too!

What you gonna' name them? "Liliha Burger"? "Palama Heights' Burger Madness"? Eh, 'das Hawaii's own! Krispy who? :p

I can see the ketchup and mustard example of your donut burgers not working. Likely those condiments are too acidic and spicey to agree with the sweet glaze on the donut. I am a bit surprised the example sans the K & M didn't fare much better. This may prove that beef, unlike pork, is less agreeable with sweet.

For the burger patty, maybe you had too much going on as well. Perhaps simply salt 'n pep'.

Knowing how well hot dogs agree with somewhat-sweet Andagi, I would have expected they'd also work in the sweeter glazed-sugar twists you tried. How about them "custardless" long johns? No way with the custard in it! Or way?

What if you had lightly seared the doughnut halves on both sides to caramelize the glaze? Just like properly done Teriyaki, that may have made all the difference, helping to provide an element of "earthiness" (burnt sugar) to the doughnut that would match the beef patty. Whoah, this is deep. lol.

According to these guys (http://www.urbanhonking.com/digest/archives/2005/08/) (scroll way down), the Luther Burger is basically a converted bacon cheeseburger.

When you reached a point that you were sick of food already might also have been a factor.

Your impression could've been much different had someone made it for you, vs. you making it and sampling it yourself. I had the same issue when doing the andadogs. Just like any cooking that I do for guests or family, I eventually go into sensory overload, and end up losing my appetite in the process.

The Reisling must've provided a good calm before and after the gastronomical storm!

From here on I'll never walk into a bakery and look at a pastry the same. Napple Burger? Leonard's Malasada Burger? Komoda Butter Roll Burger? Oh the possibilities. :D

Thanks again Scriv'.. that was a fun one! I wish you well in recovery. Drink lots of hot tea.
