Anyone tryin' out these wild new energy drinks popping up all over supermarket shelves? Or do you shun most of it as caffeinated snake oil rip offs?
Ever since Red Bull took off, it seems all the beverage manufacturers now want a hand in the can. Sobe, PimpJuice, Killer Buzz.. just to name a few.
I've had Red Bull TWICE only. First time I tried, I hated it. Tasted like medicine. The second time, I was thirsty and someone offered it and I loved it for the pure fact it was ice cold and I was thirsty. It surely didn't enable me to run a marathon, except maybe just mentally for a second. The price of this stuff is ridiculous though. They gotta' be making a KILLING on this stuff.
I recently tried this one called Rock Star Energy Drink, which costs $2.00/16 oz. can. It tasted sort of like Red Bull, but a little less "medicine-ee". I must say, I felt rather "pumped" after tanking the whole can. If I had gone to the gym right after that, I really think it would have given me a boost.
I also tried Vault, which tastes like a pumped-up Mountain Dew.. something I recommended Helen give a try. Pretty good actually, and on the cheaper side as far as "Energy Drinks" are concerned.
There's a thorough review site of Energy Drinks here (http://www.bandddesigns.com/energy/).

I used them to help me when I needed an oral rush when I was kicking smoking. Somewhere I learned that it takes a month to make or break a habit, and my smoking routine, while less than a pack a day, was predominantly when driving around town. Because I didn't want to get hung up on caffeine/crack-in-a-can drinks, I would stop at the gas station, buy me a different flavor/brand each time, and drink it during my commute.
I have never gotten into the taste of those drinks, but the shock to my oral senses helped me get over those stupid cigs. After a month, I relied on a bottle of water to help me during my drive, and that habit hasn't changed in these couple of years since I kicked the cigs.

I tried Tab Energy yesterday. It was foul. Tasted not unlike that pink super-flouride stuff you get smeared on your teeth when getting them cleaned.

Does anybody in Honolulu still sell Jolt Cola? I remember they had to stop using aluminum cans because the soda was so corrosive it always had a metallic tang from dissolving away the inner surface of the cans.

I am with you guys. Dont know if it was mental but I really liked them when I worked the graveyard shift at the juvenile hall. It tasted horribly but I was right awake for about 3 hours. It got too pricey drinking at least 2 a night - then I switched to black coffee. When I stopped working there, I stopped drinking those things - man those horrible headaches I got

Thanks for the tip.
That sounds similar to my first impression of Red Bull. Gross.
My girlfriend swears by Goji Juice. Not necessarily a speed-like, pumped feeling (it's not labeled an Energy Drink). She just doesn't feel as exhausted or drained, even after a full day's work.
I tried Jolt Cola once and never again. Way too sweet.
I'll take you up on that PIMP JUICE. But I ain't wearin' any of them "bling bling" grills over my teeth. lol

I've had Monster a few times and I've tried MDX (Pepsi's Mountain Dew energy drink) once. Monster definitely gave me a kick (whether it was psychological, physical, or both - I don't know) and it didn't taste all that bad, although the good taste weakened as I consumed more. MDX tasted better initially but it had a bad aftertaste. It also lacked the boost that Monster had. The fact that it looked like antifreeze wasn't very appetizing either.
Bottom line, energy drinks are fun, but because I don't trust the ingredients, I don't care for the syrupy taste, the buzz is shortlived, and the prices are on the high side, I tend to go for simpler drinks such as juice, soda, and Sobe.

I haven't tried any of the specialty drinks. I am drinking Vault which does seem to have a little more kick or something than Mountain Dew. I think MD tastes better.
I'm drinking:
Fuze Green Tea
Gluceau Green Tea
Hawaiian Sun Green Tea
Sobe Green Tea
Arizona Ice Tea Green Tea
Hawaiian Sun is still my favorite tasting. The Gluceau water drinks are refreshing although they taste like watered down drinks. I'll drink a Royal Mills coffee if I really want a pick me up. Yum! The Itoen Tea's teas are good. Very refreshing. I tried the Apple and Blue berry.
Interesting thread so far ...

two wrongs don't make a right.
No, but three do.
I didn't enjoy Red Bull ... too sweet. It made me suspect that most other e-drinks are also too sweet. Vault (an energy soda?) was okay, but still too sweet.
It seems to me I had a diet Arizona green tea that was pretty good, but I prefer black coffee and diet sodas.
Dissention from, or avoidance by me isn't going to hurt the energy drink business. It is a rapidly growing sector of the beverage industry.

Jolt Cola is still marketed here in the Northeast, though rather than being sold in aluminum cans, it is sold in 20 oz. plastic bottles. Flavors now include the original cola flavor; blue raspberry; and a red colored citrus punch.
I've read the comments about Tab Energy..the drink sold in the small, narrow ten oz. aluminum cans. Reading those comments compeled me to bring up the fact the original Tab diet cola, marketed by Coca-Cola, is still available here as well. I was in a supermarket in Newport this past Saturday, and I noted in the beverage aisle that Tab was available in 2 liter bottles, 6 packs, and 12 packs. Based on what I've read, Tab is seldom seen in many parts of the US. I haven't seen the original Tab sold in Hawaii for some time.

It's gettable, but I don't know if anyone's carrying it. You're more likely to get it at a liquor store than at a supermarket. My understanding is that liquor stores get a list of goods available from the distributor, and there might be a "non alcoholic" section, and some retailers order Jolt off that list.
As for sugar, you can forget about it, because Jolt, which was sweetened with 100% cane sugar until 1994 or 1995, is now sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. While you used to be able to get it in glass bottles, it is now sold in twenty-ounce plastic. Add this all up, and you get a regular soft drink with as much caffeine as a strong cup of coffee. Jolt used to be something special, but no more.
"Twice the caffeine" was 100mg per twelve-ounce serving. Coca-Cola had between 50 and 55 mg per twelve-ounce can, so that's where they got that number. Mountain Dew has about 75 mg per twelve-ounce can, so even when Jolt was tasty in a glass bottle, it wasn't that caffeinated. A cup of strong coffee has about 100 mg, as does a standard shot of espresso (these vary, of course). Pepsi and Diet Pepsi have about 35 mg (if I remember correctly) per twelve-ounce can, so in a way, Mountain Dew could claim to have "twice the caffeine."
As for Red Bull, in addition to caffeine, it claims taurine ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurine) as one of its active ingredients, as do many other energy drinks. I don't know if taurine does anything, but there have been mornings when I've needed a little bit more SOMETHING, and I've had Diet Red Bull and I really think it made a difference. It could have been the caffeine. Or it could have been the guarana ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guarana), which was most famously (for a while, anyway) the touted ingredient in Josta.
I recently tried a Korean energy drink called Bacchus-F mostly because the name cracked me up (attention former students: I told you there were countless reasons to study Greek and Roman mythology). I believe it is marketed in Korea as a hangover remedy. The ingredients looked pretty much like the ingredients in Jolt, except for the addition of apple juice. I did not notice any effects from teh Bacchus-F, which comes in small glass bottles like the ones Lipovitan comes in.
Speaking of Lipovitan, has anyone tried this? I have a few bottles in my fridge because my mom thought they'd be good for me, but I've never tried them.

An aside about cola drinks sweetened with 100% cane sugar: Coca-Cola that has been sweetened with cane sugar is available around here during the time period Passover is celebrated.
I don't know much about the Jewish faith, but evidently regular Coca-Cola that has been sweetened with corn syrup is not certified as Kosher for Passover; as such, Coca-Cola mixes up small batches of cane sugar-sweetened Coke, sold in two liter bottles, around the time of that holiday. The cane sugar Coca-Cola is identifiable from regular corn syrup Coke by the color of the screw-off caps of the bottles. Additionally, there is some marking on the caps of cane sugered Coke, usually in Hebrew charecters, along with a small message that the contents of the bottle have been certifiied as Kosher for Passover.
I like corn syrup Coke better; cane sugar sweetened Coke isn't quite as crisp and refreshing to me as corn syrup sweetened Coke.

I share the odd inclination to try new beverages at random just out of curiosity (Gatorade 'Rain' being the last inauspicious experiment), but Tab I'll most certainly skip! And to think, I was just eyeing that little pink can at Star Market on Saturday...
I've also tried Red Bull out of curiosity, and while I wouldn't say it was as bad as Tab sounds, it certainly wasn't something I was eager to taste again.

Sold out of vending machines in Japan, in small cans or as a "fountain" drink, it was also promoted as a hangover remedy.

If you're ever in Las Vegas and are an afficianado of Coke products, go check out the Coke Museum (next to the M&Ms Museum) on the Strip. Upstairs, they have a little cafe/store where for I think it was $8, you can sample about 20 different coke products from all over the world outside the US. Some of them didn't taste too bad, but some (especially some of the Asian ones) were really baaaaad.

I consumed Jelly Belly's Sport Beans while running in last year's Honolulu Marathon. Many runners (including myself), for years, have relied on jelly beans to provide them with a quick bit of energy when running a marathon starts to get tough....in Honolulu, that's usually around the turn-around point in Hawaii Kai. Jelly beans are a good choice of instant carbs because they can be transported in one's running attire without much effort or additional weight, unlike the sport gel packs, which can be awkward to run with in a race if one is not using the special waist belts to carry them around with during a race. Personally, I carry a supply of jelly beans in my Wrist-runner, which is a zippered wallet that wraps around one's wrist. Before Jelly Belly came out with these sports beans in the summer of '05, I used to bring the bubble gum flavored Jelly Bellys to races with me.
About Jelly Belly's Sport Beans: They do not contain caffeine...their main benefit is the delivery of electrolytes and carbs. I imagine they could easily contain caffeine should Jelly Belly ever want to produce a variety with it, ala the sports gels that come with it. The sport beans are also larger than a standard size Jelly Belly...by at least 2 times. They also have a consistancy that is similar to the pectin-based jelly beans one can buy, i.e., more jel-like than a standard, Easter basket jelly bean. These sports beans are not going to fuel a runner through a 26.2 mile race on their own; rather they are meant to give runners who've been using jelly beans in the past a source of quick carbs, not only carbs, but carbs with electrolytes...and in the Honolulu Marathon, with the "Amino Value" sports drink runners get at the water stations, electrolytes are hard to come by during the race. (In my opinion, Amino Value simply doesn't have enough salt or potassium in it)
Jelly Belly Sport Beans sell for about a dollar a bag, but can be often had for less when they are on sale.

Japanese are hardcore about their energy drinks. No one else would put caffeine and nicotine in their drinks in mass quantities and cover it all up with a ton of sugar (and give it a funky name).

If you can still find Herbal Life products, they were one of the first companies to sell Guarana in tablet form back in the mid 80's. It's called NRG and I lived by it when taking night classes at UH/Manoa while working full time during the day and working 17-hour weekend days/nights. I also sold it by the case making around $2,000 a month in income. The product sold itself as Guarana is a naturally occuring caffeine and not processed as it's found in coffee and soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi so when the caffeine is depleted from the body it's a more gradual release rather than like a bomb. You didn't get the jitters while on it and you didn't get the withdrawls later.

If caffeine (http://wilstar.com/caffeine.htm) is the culprit then a bigger warning goes for coffee. The guy had 8 Red Bulls over 5 hours; the caffeine equivalent to approx. 6 cups of coffee (depending on the type) over the same amount of time.

Yeah! That stuff does work, but whatever you do, DO NOT drink 2 bottles. That stuff is full of Vitamin B, big honkin' dose. Drink only one and you definitely get a kick.
We used to drink this stuff before entering martial arts sparring matches. About 30 minutes before the match, we'd tank the bottle and wait for the rush. If you timed it right, just about when you hit the ring, you'd be super-pumped, able to take on anybody! Rock and Roll!
But if you drank two bottles thinking of multiplied benefits, forget it. Run for the restroom, atomic blast in 3, 2, 1, ... If you were lucky, you would make it to the toilet in time.
What? I'm serious! :D

I avoid caffiene as much as I can, unless I'm on a long trip across a lot of time zones. I wont even drink coffee if I can help it.
I am a fan of Vitamin Water, but I think their energy flavor has an acidic aftertaste. Perform used to be my favorite flavor until they took it off the market (grr); they supposedly changed it to "Charge", which is OK, but I find it a tad too sweet. I have one more unopened bottle of perform, which I've now enshrined, I'll probably end up using it during an important kendo exam or tournament.

It says it's "lightly carbonated", but I didn't think it was any lighter than a typical soda. Actually, speaking of soda, I'm beginning to think labeling it an "Energy Drink" is an excuse for these manufacturers to get away with NOT making a reasonably good-tasting product. This stuff is not good at all, flavor-wise. Again, another variant of "Cough Medicine Soda" is the best way to describe it.
The pinkish-red color of the drink has you thinking it's supposed to be cherry or strawberry flavored, but when it hits your tongue, you feel more like you accidentally drank something from a beaker in a chemistry lab.
I will give a slight thumbs-up for energy boost. I drank it about an hour ago in replacement of tea (my usual morning "joe") and I feel alert and wide awake. I think. lol
This is their claim on the can:
"This specially formulated drink is both refreshing and functional. It is a low calorie energy boost with essential vitamins, magnesium and taurine which benefit the body, mind and soul.
This product also contains SUPER CITRIMAX®, a mild herbal appetite suppressant.
No sugar, no guilt.
I'm not hungry, so I guess that last one is working.
It was $1.49 for this 12 oz. can from Marukai.

Energy Drink this. Energy Drink that. Pick me up. Work harder. It's the American Way. People admire hard work in America. Get'er Done. American's love the work ethic.
And in the next breath they say Crystal Meth is bad, bad, bad.
