So how do you like your popcorn? Buttered? Salted? With cheese? Or with icecubes?

For me at least buttered. I can do without the salt.

I can do without butter, but I need salt!

In college, my misguided hippie friends used to ruin popcorn by putting brewer's yeast on it. <gag> More for them that way!

Watching movies is not watching at all without a box of popcorn with extra butter and salt.

Oh....of course with a date, to buy the popcorn, drinks and candies too! :p

At the movies, extra butter, salt and mochi crunch!
(Signature used REAL butter - I don't know about its successor, Regal).

At home, on microwaved or freshly popped (in a pot) popcorn; melted real butter and one of the following -- or a couple of the following, in different bowls:

- kosher salt, mochi crunch and furikake (the nori kind, of course)
- lemon pepper (really ono!)
- kosher salt, chipotle powder and a little cayenne
- garlic salt (w/parsely bits -- pretty!)
- Old Bay seasoning (tastes similar to Dixie Grill's popcorn)

The possibilities are limited only by one's spice selection.

Now that I'm writing this, it occurs to me one could also flavor the butter during/after the melting process ... or use leftover herbed or spiced butter from another recipe.

Ho, I'm ono for popcorn now!

Curry powder works well. Li hing mui powder probably would work, too.

Extra butter and salt at [some of] the theaters. "Extra" only because the regular amount there seems nearly nonexistant. Otherwise I don't actually like to eat popcorn. Something about the smell drives me crazy. If I do eat, I can only eat so much before I feel sickly. I like the kakimochi/furikake mixes in small doses, as well. I used to eat that cheddar flavored popcorn that comes in the big tin can but I seemed to pick the stale bunches a lot so I just stopped eating them altogether.

I hate movie popcorn. I hate carnival popcorn. I only like popcorn popped my way: With as little oil as possible. No butter. No salt. Kaki mochi, most preferably the yakko shape. Furikake is also good, but purely optional. Light, dry, airy, fluffy kernals are best enhanced by kaki mochi.

The one exception: I really like that microwaved caramel popcorn, but only as long as the caramel is soft; once it hardens, it's trash.

Kilinahe loves to pop her own, in a cast iron skillet, minimal oil, a little more than minimal salt. Me? I'm not picky, quite lazy, and cheap. I tend to stock up on the Act II microwave popcorn and sakura-style arare at WalMart and make a simple mix twice a week to chow down during our Netflix movies.

When we want to live it up a little, we get those easy-breezy "hurricane popcorn" kits at Costco.

Normally, I like it plain, maybe with a little salt.

The only microwave popcorn I like is the Smart Balance brand. Has enough salt and butter for me. Some of the microwave popcorns on the market have wayyyy too much butter for my liking and i feel dirty after eating them

but when I go to the movies, I'll splurge for the butter on my 'corn :). but I never eat more than half a small bag. i dunno how y'all eat those large ones! :)

The Varisty Theater there is squeeze bottle of melted butter you can use to flavor the popcorn but it usally just does the top part of the bag. Also used Kit Kat bites in the popcorn bag today.

Heh, we went to Restaurant Row last month and my mom nearly died of happiness when she saw the butter dispenser they had. She wants to go there all the time now just because she can put her own butter.

Does Icee count? In any event making shave ice with a lot of flavor options does take time to manage, add to the fact that shave ice tends to be served with part of it outside it's container, making the possibilty of things spilling in the theater itself.

It might be nice to have but it's impartical.

I love Icee at the movies. And at the movies you can get a sprite one. My favorite Icee spot is the crack seed store on Koko Head Avenue in Kaimuki. That guy in there is such a sweetie pie.

I used to love it drenched in butter and salt.

Then I worked a few years in movie theatres, where one of the perks was "all the popcorn and soda you want, for free." That was when I was in high-school, and you can imagine how much I ingested.

So...until about three years ago, even the smell made me ill. Now, I can handle a few handfuls again, but not much.

In any event making shave ice with a lot of flavor options [---] might be nice to have but it's impartical. <impractical>True. ICEE works. As far as making a mess, an overloaded box or bag of popcorn is just as bad, if not worse.

We grew up with JIFFY POP. Far superior in flavor and crunch to the microwave stuff. Used to scare the heck out of me as a kid when the foil would expand to maximum pop. Glad to see they still sell this nostalgic brand.

Speaking of brands, Food Network recently did a biography on Orville Redenbacher. The man sure was into the science of the perfect pop. That wasn't just marketing fluff.

i know im not the only one who sneaks in a bottle of furikake at the movie theatres, ive seen people pouring it on at the condiments area. im too shame, i wait til the movie starts then pour it on =p

Might I ask you, and everyone else, what brand of furikake you prefer for "hurricane" popcorn? I always seem to buy the wrong one. It's tasty, but not exactly what you get from carts and snack shops.

I definitely sneak in arare, stopping at Longs on my way to the box office. (Hey, I'd buy the arare they sell inside if it wasn't one-third as much arare for four times the price!) Why do they have to put arare in such noisy packages, though? :D

the prices at the concession stands are high yup, thats supposedly how movie theaters make their money, the money at the door goes to pay for the film. i was thinking the other day that the nachos they sell at dole are an extra rip off. i think it says 'nachos supreme' but its only chips and cheese. and its like $4-5? last night i went to the dollar theater and at least there you can get chili and it comes in container with the cheese and chili on the side. chili smelled funky tho, like cinamon. probably just my nose.

The latest in "Popcorn News": Popcorn Maker to Remove Butter Flavoring Chemical Linked to Lung Ailment (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,295826,00.html)

The decision comes a day after a doctor at a leading lung research hospital said in a warning letter to federal regulators that consumers, not just factory workers, may be in danger from fumes from buttery flavoring in microwave popcorn.

ConAgra spokeswoman Stephanie Childs said the company decided to remove the butter flavoring diacetyl from its popcorn because of the risk the chemical presents to workers who handle large quantities.

The chemical diacetyl has been linked to cases of bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare life-threatening disease often called popcorn lung.All I know is a badly-burned bag of microwavable popcorn truly smells CAUSTIC enough to cause respiratory problems. Horrors!

Honestly, don't like real [melted] butter poured over my popcorn. It just makes it soggy.

I prefer the salted butter powder used in carnivals in the old days. If they're caustic, I have no problem. Not a smoker to begin with. :D

I remember as a kid, when taking the escalator to the ground floor of Sears in the Ala Moana Shopping center, you could tell when you hit that floor because of the smell of hot buttered popcorn in the red and white striped boxes (later became paper packages).

If I had to choose a poison, popcorn would be it:D

Actually, I like my popcorn "plain".

I'm not sure as the butter used in the old Sears store is that bad. So far they'd only talked about the microwave type. Given the unique demands to make buttered microwave popcorn work, it's probably something very different.

I wonder if hot air popcorn poppers will make a comeback?
