I was reminded of our previous discussion of the Krispy Kreme Burger (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=9236) after reading this L.A. Times write up of KFC's Famous Bowl. The author held nothing back in describing yet another amazing leap into excess.
The Verdict: Oink (http://www.latimes.com/features/printedition/magazine/la-tm-neil29jul16,1,1522639.story?ctrack=1&cset=true)As we consider the worst fast-food offering ever, let us begin with the artifact itself: KFC's new Famous Bowls product consists of a plastic tub of mashed potatoes or rice, topped with yellow corn, fried chicken nuggets, gravy and three varieties of grated cheese. All in one container, all to be consumed as a single homogenous mass, spork after spork of undifferentiated food matter... Even in a nation that has made the bulk fast-food bolus something of a culinary art, KFC's Famous Bowls are somehow splendidly, transcendently awful. The difference being, this item is one folks in Hawaii could actually sample. Has anyone here dared?
The L.A. Times piece then goes on to list a few of the other entries in this gullet-choking market, including the Krispy Kreme Burger, Carl's Jr.'s 1,420 calorie Double Six-Dollar Burger, and the "Eat Like A Man" campain at Burger King.
Not long after Atkins this and diet that, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction, and with unabashed gusto. I'll bet any idea you come up with to fit the theme "over the top" today would quite seriously be considered by a major chain.

I ate that chicken bowl several times already. It was good. I thought the cheese would be weird but it was just fine. Obviously I'm posting this as a zombie as far as the L.A. Times goes, though http://nohomers.net/images/smilies/dance2.gif

When I was a kid this KFC 'bowl' idea, if made at home, would've been called a casserole and it wouldn't have been served in the same size portion as KFC's. Unfortunately fat laden, carbohydrate rich foods tend to taste good.

Bad enough their food quality is already biting the dust, KFC has lost it's appeal to this family. Their new offering will probably be just as bad as the rest of their food in quality as well as for one's health. We ate our last KFC "stuff" last week, one of 2 or 3 visits per year. They lost us for good, now.

I tried it once (was reported in either for lunch or dinner thread a few weeks ago). It was pretty decent, however it lacks the cole slaw and a biscuit from the regular meals. The only thing they add from the standard meal offering is the cheese, everything else is their standard stuff, I grant you it's more mashed potatoes and not very much chicken pieces if you are comparing it to their usual meal offerings.

Was KFC Always as bad as it is now, or ws it better back in the day (1970's) when you bought a bucket of chicken and it was the greatest tasting thing on earth?
I pretty much have ruled them out as far as food options, all their stuff is just really bad now, or maybe my tastes as an adult have changed.
The parfaits are good, but the basic chicken is just not so great...
I still like the buscuits tho', but McDonald's buscuits at brekfast time are pretty amazing too.

Well, we can agree to disagree on that one. A band that apes "In My Time of Dying" for their entire sound could never hold a candle to the real thing...especially the drumming(sic) and lack of bass. Not to mention that Zeppelin covered MANY musical styles and the White Hypes pretty much stick to one narrow format. But hey, that's just how I see it...there are alot of people who disagree ;-)
That being said, the Johnny Depp clone does a pretty good job on the slide guitar stuff.

My mother feels that the only good cole slaw found on this island is KFC's. I've tried giving her Safeway's, which is undoubtedly fresher most of the time, but there's something about that KFC slaw that she really likes.

A copycat of KFC's yummy cole slaw.
8 cups finely diced cabbage (about 1 head)
1/4 cup diced carrots
2 tablespoons minced onions
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

I initially read and responded to this thread at work so I figured on my way home I would stop at KFC and try the Famous Bowl (was that the name of it) again. When I got there the counter person said it was for a limited time and it expired yesterday.
Had the Chrunchy Garlic Chicken instead.

What a ridiculous article. What, this writer has never had fried chicken, potatoes, and corn on one plate, and had a mouthful with a bite of each until everything was gone? That's how I eat pretty much every meal. What's a taco? What's a pizza? What's a casserole? I love food like this; my only problem with what KFC did was its execution: the thing had been sitting in a warm drawer when I picked one up, so the chicken pieces were soggy. Taste was fine. I also ordered cole slaw on the side.
I'm practicing for my audition tape for The Next Food Network Star (I was serious when I said I was going to audition!), and one of my recipes is for wasabi mashed potatoes with wilted baby greens mixed in. I love mixing up food like that. And shhhhhh! I usually put some grated cheddar in it!
Yeah. I'm not going to eat like that every day, but there is nothing wrong with an occasional little bit of excess.

Thanks, KImo! I'll no doubt give this a try. Think you can find me a recipe for pepper hash? It's mostly AMISH! Has cabbage, some sweet pepper, sugar, vinegar...kinda like a mayonnaise-free slaw. Grew up with it in the Delaware Valley and when I go back there it's NOWHERE to be found! The company that manufactured it was called Quaker Maid. Don't see that any more either. I'm just amazed I made that trip without eating a TastyKake!

Try adding pineapple to that...there's a place I used to go that is an old school fried chicken place, that makes the best fried chicken I've ever eaten...Really juicy, but not at all oily. Their cole slaw has pineapple in it and it's really yummy.

Ahhh KFC... my first job in High School.
I know for a fact that when I was working there... the original recipe that was left at the end of the night.... would be refridgerated and then dipped into barbecue sauce and reheated the next day..... "Thus BBQ chicken at KFC"
Now I'm wondering if this bowl product might be the left over original recipe from the night before...shredded up and put into this concoction?

My first food job was McDonalds. We never saved anything. We had to dump out the ketchup and mustard that was in the active dispensers. We didn't put lettuce back in the bag and back into the fridge. We had to dump all the burgers older than 10 minutes, fries older than 7 minutes. Don't know if that's still the case, but, nothing was repackaged into next day's food.
Don't eat there anymore. It saved our lives when the kids were suckin' on french fries and shakes, but we've tightened the belt on the wallet and subsequently the waist (and waste!)...however, I must admit that we recently relented to get the kids a couple of happy meals so they could get their CARS! And they are so disapointed that they didn't get MATER as in Toe-Mater? sigh.

As for the KFC bowl, when it was first announced, a newspaper here suggested that the chain was giving away free defibrilation if you ate two.

We try to limit fast food to an extra special treat, but I confess to risking all our lives during McD's Cars promotion. The kids loved the movie and the toys, but heck, my wife and I did too! I liked Luigi. My wife hoarded Fillmores.

And that was only halfway into our collection. We've got a bin full. Doc is the only one we didn't collect in bulk! We also have the Cocoa Krispies Mater, and the mail-in Pop Tarts pen, and... yes, my arteries are paying for all this, thank you.
If your kids really want a Mater, lavagal, I'm sure we can spare one. A badly abused one, mind you...
Um. Trying in vain to get back on topic... KFC? I really try to avoid KFC. But sometimes, the siren song of that original recipe is too strong! I give in and pig out a few times a year, tops -- and always regret it, afterwards.

That chicken bowl and the Snacker were the only things I bought from KFC for a very long time. I'm not a fan of their food otherwise. We usually go to Popeye's if we want fried chicken, and that happens a few times a year, especially since it's so close to us. If not then we just go to like...Bear's/Lahaina Chicken Company for a chicken plate.

Confession time. Please don't call CPS on me ... I mean, we're all friends here, right?
I let one of my boys order the KFC bowl ... and he said it was REALLY good.
I'm sure they took it out of the warming drawer and like Scriv (I think) said, the nugget coating was prolly soggy Nevertheless, that didn't deter the lad from scarfing it down -- not only without complaint, but with the relish with which one devours comfort food.
From a business standpoint, I thought KFC was GENIUS for offering the bowl. The only ingredient they didn't already have on the menu, to my knowledge, was the cheese. The corn could have been scraped from the mini-cobs left over from the previous day, or perhaps the Colonel ordered kernels (hee hee) to make the dish.
Lavagal, McDonald's still tosses stuff after a short time -- eldest son works there and it drives him crazy. I guess the distaste for food waste I've raised the kids with has stuck. At least ONE of my teachings got in there! ;)
One thing about KFC's marketing that drives me crazy, is the music it uses for its TV spots. Why in the world would KFC (which started out as KENTUCKY Fried Chicken -- for you young whippersnappers who didn't know) -- use "Sweet Home ALABAMA" ??? I mean, I know "Kentucky Woman" by Neil Diamond wouldn't really work, but puh-leze. Which clueless-about-Southern-pride, Eastern Seaboard ad agency made THAT decision and ran?

I just don't like many thing in this modern world; corporate policy prevents any food to go to either the homeless or even maybe pig farmers...
and yet. what is allowed is stuff like the overly prevelant practice of coughing in the drink cup and/or grabbing it on the inside when they hand it to you before ya fill it up.
ugh.

I just came back from a roadtrip vacation up in the mainland. Starting and spending the most time in Idaho, then through Montana and Wyoming. It's incredibly beautiful up there (but that's another thread). Most of the people live off of fast food! I would die if I had to stay up there too long. My wife is a wonderful cook and I don't mind doing the dishes at all. Give me real, home cooked food please!

DEFINITELY ask for a different cup, if that happens to you! That is disgraceful.
One time at our local KFC, eldest son wanted a super-large drink and they had "promo" cups (some movie tie-in or something) that were plastic, and were kept near the drive-through window.
The young lad behind the counter handed one to my son ... and it was FILTHY with black/gray grime. We asked for another and another and they were all dirty. (How the insides all got dirty when they were stacked inside each other like that is a bit of a mystery.) We made them wash one out before accepting a cup. Another truly disturbing thing about it was, that nobody behind the counter seemed concerned about it. I really should have asked for a word with the Mgr.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with "busting" someone for bad customer service -- in a courteous and professional manner, of course.
