Hello, this is my first post here.

I'm a kama'aina transplant, planning to visit home next month for about 9 days. We've got most of what we want to eat mapped out, but I have a couple of categories unanswered:

1) Hawaiian plate lunch. Kalua pig, lau lau, lomi salmon, poi, squid luau, you know da kine. Wheah fo' get da bes'?

2) Chinese cake noodle. Pan-fried noodles, crispy on the outside but chewy on the inside, cut into squares and smothered with meat, seafood, veggies, and lots of brown sauce. Was thinking McCully Chop Suey but do you know someplace better?

We will have a car, but preference is for someplace between Chinatown and Kahala (unless it's so ono, you gotta make the drive!)

What is a Kamaina transplant? I take it you were born and raised here then moved to the mainland the returned? That would make the only sense.

Anyway squid luau...there's a hole in the wall right at the end of North King street near where Middle street hits it. Go odea for some ono Hawaiian grinds like squid luau.

I'm not Chinese but oh man Yen King made some outstanding cake noodles in the northern style with black bean oyster sauce.

Leong's closed down several months ago. Helena's on N. School Street makes an authentic Squid Lu'au. Infact, all her Hawaiian Foods are authentic. There's some pic's located here on the threads. If you do a search that pz took dining at Helena's for lunch. I'll check to see if I can find um. :)

If not. You gotta search yourself. :D

I would go to Helena's or Highway Inn for the Hawaiian food. Supposedly On On Restaurant have the best cake noodle but I never had it so I can't say.

For a good cheap Lau Lau plate is Masa's Massive. When it is on sale it is $3.50. The best part it is not too salty. I cant eat at Ono no more the slat kills me the next few hours. I have to drive 2 quarts of water to get rid of the salt jitters.

House of Dragon and Aiea chop suey have great cake noodle. My favorite at House of Dragon is the Seafood Combination Cake Noodle with black bean sauce. the noodles is crispy on the outside and chewy inside. I hate soggy noodles which I find at most other chinese restaurants. you can have any topping you want on the cake noodles.

Mixed vegatables (and you can add pork or beef or chicken)
Seafood Combination
Beef Broccoli

They can also make it with Black Bean sauce. which enhances the flavor and makes it different.

Masa's is great, Helena's is wonderful. Excellent in different ways.

My wife loves oyster sauce chicken on cake noodle. We often go to Ken Fong's on Smith St. in Chinatown. I'm fond of Mini Garden up the block at Hotel, but their 99 Ranch location is -- according to some -- even better. Also Double Eight and Glowing Dragon in Chinatown, but they're closer to average.

I'm hungry now!

NOW look what you've done!
I'm ono for Hawaiian food, Chinese food and lumpia (not all Filipino food, just lumpia.)

(sigh)

I second Auntie's nomination for People's Cafe downtown, (the pipi kaula is SOO good, I wish they gave more!) ... but also for Masu's (which I've written about and where I've eaten myself silly).

I don't know if they have cake noodle, but Little Village Noodle House on, Smith St.? ... is beyond words (in a REALLY good way). They've got a Web site where there is often a discount coupon. Nate should do a search of local food reviews to get the scoops on Hawaiian plates (every pun intended) and cake noodles.

Leo...next time you come up to North Seattle, try the food at North Shore BBQ (N. 105th/Holman Road, about midway between Hwy 99 and Greenwood Ave). Gavin the owner used to own some L&L franchises in Hawai'i but moved up here. He has some mighty tasty mochiko chicken, mahimahi, chicken katsu and for hot days like we've had this week, real Hawaiian shave ice! Gavin's wife says they brought their machine from Hawai'i. They have all the syrups (not Malolo though), plus the azuki beans, vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, li hing mui poweder, chocolate syrup...The shave ice reminds me of what I used to eat small kid time from Azeka Store in Kihei, when they were across from Kalama Park.

Yours is the third recommendation I've heard for this place - especially the mochiko chicken; gotta get there soon, I guess! Mahalo.
