  • Almost there... greetings

    Aloha,

I stumbled upon this board a couple hours ago and have been stuck on it ever since.

There are some really great people here and great info.

First off I will be moving to either Oahu or Maui in the next month or so. My brother was born and raised on Maui, and would love to be there with him, but I have a friend that lives on Oahu near Kuhio beach. She works for Hawaiian Telcom and that is my line of work (management for a telco). so my job situation is much easier on Oahu. But I LOVE Maui. anyway due to the available jobs i'm thinking Oahu we be better. I have about a year's salary saved up, and also have my own side business which i could do on Hawaii as well (webdesigner and photographer)

My first question is (i've searched but couldn't get any info on it) what are the major banks on Hawaii? and of those who offers the best online banking? i have bank of america now and don't see them over there. most of my banking is done online except for deposits and BOA was awesome at that. any recommendations?

Also i must admit, i've never been to Oahu. Only been to Maui tons of times...

Would prefer Maui but think it would be too difficult to find a job in my field right away.

anyway thanks for all the great info you guys provide. looking forward to reading more!

          Re: Almost there... greetings

Localmotion did say they had a years savings!

That will last... a few weeks/months maybe depending on what a years saving is!

Let's see at 20% from each paycheck...

I could last about a month!

Get plenty hotel and restaurant jobs available... if the webdesigner/photographer gig doesn't work out.

With your degree in what may help us in answering your second pending question!

I think First Hawaiian might be it... several recommendations and i checked out the demos for online banking from BOH, First Hawaiian, and Central Pacific and others and First Hawaiian seemed to have the best online setup.

luckily i can stay with my friend in waikiki rent free for 1-2 months while looking for something. that helps a lot...

If you plan to use online banking and ATMs exclusively, consider that BOH has a presence in every 7-Eleven on Oahu.

You also might want to think about which bank has a physical branch in the area where you will end up living... not to go inside, but to make depositing stuff more convenient.

And I'm sure you've compared the rates and fees associated with each bank.

Good luck with your move. Oh, and Kailua is good... if you're looking for an area that is increasingly populated by old wealthy haole from the mainland. Rent will probably be cheaper in town, if that is a factor in your decision-making process.

based on your description of Kailua, that's not me... i need cheaper, but in a cool area. next to easily accessible things. size is not that important. i don't plan on spending much time at home.

                        what about Makiki?

                          what about Makiki?
                          High density...

average 1 brm will run you about 900 - 2000 depending on things...

Generally 1 parking stall available... limited visitor parking

Makiki is not cool, temp wise. I know - I live there. It's all concrete with very little open green space. But of course, lately no place has really been cool.

as far as banking goes, I've had accounts at American Savings, Bank of Hawaii & First Hawaiian (over a 10 year period). For online services, I think FHB has the best - easy to read, you can get your statement online & they furnish copies of your checks online also if you need to see them. and they have a lot of ATM's especially at Ala Moana Center & Ward Center. They don't have as many as BOH but for all the places I shop, there is usually an FHB ATM really close. Most banks here also have free accounts for seniors - some start at age 50 so that helps with fees (if you're old enough to qualify )
