i think hawaii threads is kinda okay but yet its kinda lame.because no one is ever on and when you post a reply to something no one ever answers back because either they forget about the webssite because it is to lame and they forget about it or they figure they would rather be sitting at aol website waiting for there friend to reply instead of being hear chatting it up with some awesome hawaiians. I certainly think this site needs a little more MPH!!!like a little more spark or something cause if not then you guys might have a little less members and you guys also need to meet up with eachother more i have been on this site everyday and i still havent seen anyone reply to my messages or i havent even met up with anyone....it really sucks.

If you look at HawaiiThreads Who's Online (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/online.php?) section there is a tendency for people to read what's posted (lots of Guests) as opposed to registering and then contributing to a thread.
Then again it depends on the thread and the people who read it. Maybe the information presented was such that no response is needed from the user community. Other times a response and discussion gets generated. Don't feel bad because a thread you started has no responses to it.

I'd never heard of it (http://eatsshootsandleaves.com/ESLquiz.html) before. Mahalo.I think you'll enjoy it - the author, Lynne Truss, is British, so the humor (humour?) can be droll at times, but you'll still laugh out loud. She is writing as someone who knows she is an absolute stickler for correct punctuation, and can make fun of herself for that obsession; at the same time, it is filled with hilarious examples of errors in punctuation. It just came out in paperback recently. I recommend it highly to all the editorial types who inhabit mean ol' HT. (Note the cheap attempt to stay on-topic.)

WHY do they call him a Kiwi? Cuz just like the Kiwi bird, "he eats roots shoots and leaves."

Are you sure? Generally an Aussie wouldn't like to be called a Kiwi and visa versa.
My Kiwi buddy always responds when mistaken for an Aussie, "Do you see prisoner tattooed on my forehead?"

We are an Ohana. Like every Ohana there are spats and differences. :( I know when I feel I've been wronged, I hit back. Ainokea. As long as I stay within the rules and regulations of the Forum.
Nobody likes disagreements. However, it comes with the territory. We all have our various opinions on topics. I've learned to respect each and everyone's view. But when someone shows disrespect for me - I will not sit back and say nuttin.

If kimo55 decides to run a board that's restricted to Island residents only, I can respect that. admin seems to be okay with us "outsiders" being on HT, so that's where that stands.
I don't feel that kimo55 has a bad or severely erroneous impression of me, nor I of him, so I don't suffer any pain from his "mainlander" jibes. If he really does generalize and stereotype ALL non-Hawai`i residents the way his posts sometimes imply, that's a problem he'll have to deal with, not me. Personally, I look forward to the day we can raise a few glasses together (along with many others on HT.)

Maybe it's just a similarly twisted view of the world that I sometimes share, but his postings that make the least "sense" are often the ones that make me think, "oh...I get it now." Sometimes on a delayed basis, however - first glance, nada; later review, enlightening. And there are times I just think "what the fu......?," and that view never changes.

And despite the thrashing I get now and then from my fellow posters here, I still love them a lot...even Palolo Joe. I can't hate a guy from my old stomping grounds (1309 Jasmine Street in Palolo Valley).

Nice story (http://starbulletin.com/96/09/26/features/story1.html) about Palolo Valley!
Miulang
Thanks for the link Miulang. Reading that story brought back many lost memories about the place including the soap box derbies, I even got some vintage 8mm black and white movies of those events.
I also remember the community picnics at Ala Moana Beach Park too with the sack races. That really was a great time. I also remember Ed Pacheco as well. I was president of one of the three subgroups of Kaimuki Little League (The Orioles) and sat on the district 6 or was it 7 board. Our league spanned from Manoa to Hawaii Kai but Palolo was blanked out because of it's own Little League charter (Palolo Little League). Ed approached me to have his league play against us. I told him I would arrange for an exhibition game at the Palolo Rec center/field to see if Palolo had really changed. We stopped playing years earlier because of some tension between the neighboring communities and Palolo.
At the time the president of the neighborhood board and the housing project told us that times had changed and it would be safe for the kids to play in Palolo.
That day we had to stop the game twice because three blahlahs from the project across the street kept walking across the field during play throwing their beer bottles and swearing at the kids on the field. After the game several of our "visiting" team cars had their tires slashed and one windshield broken. A fight nearly broke out with an older father from our league and a housing tenant that didn't like us being there.
I told Ed that I was saddened because of what happened that day but events such as those wouldn't allow our league to consider playing with them unless things improved a bit more. He said he would have a talk to those "boys" that caused trouble but I couldn't convince the rest of the KLL to reconsider after his motion to moderate. Too bad because I would have loved to see Palolo play with us.
I'm glad things have gotten better there. Palolo used to be a really safe place then it got pretty bad, I guess it's reclaiming some of it's innocence of yesteryear...and that's good. Maybe KLL will reconsider again, that would be nice.

I have recently received emails and PM's regarding people on HT posting about me.
For the most part... those people that "snark" me... I have met and have spent time with... I take most of it as a joke...
I hope everyone here on HT understands that I post snarky comments to those that I have met... and occasionaly will post a comment too someone I don't know.
I appreciate all the support that those that have sent me... However, I will still wear a target on my back and allow people to critize me for my beliefs.
I've always believed in Acceptance, Respect Affection and Support..
I enjoy being the target on my back sometimes..... No matter to me... If you no like what I write... no read... sheesh.... easy nuff yeah?
I personally would like to thank that Admins at HT for keeping this civil. I know a lot of us don't post to other threads...however, if you read anyother message boards... you will see so much hate....
We will all have posters that we don't disagree with.... however, the beauty of HT is that we all are pretty much diversified and we each try to add what we can...whether it's informative or not...
I love the heat I get... no matter to me... feeds to my ego in a sense... however, I don't enjoy the misunderstanding that people often get from my posts...but that's ok...
With this said...I've had many people from off oahu asking things such as I'd like to meet you guys.. you all seem so cool....
Many of us work schedules.... so if you would like us to have a get together for you....and your not from here..... Post plenty things in different formats.... gain some HT friends.... and then for sure we would be more than willing to meet you guys and have something for you ....if and when you come...
The requests for more get togethers by HT members that I've seen one or two posts from really don't give me much of an incentive to throw or hold something for you guys.... and as I already said... it will be under your guys name next time....
Sincerely,
Manoa

I could tell by the words that the song was from NWA... straight out of compton...
I'm sure there are many people on HT that are going wtf? and scratching there heads... So I will try and help them figure this out...
NWA (The Group) - Stands for "Niggers With Attitudes"
The Song - (Straight Out of Compton) - Where I was born...and lived for the first 3 years of my life.
The Poetic Poem - A very well thought out poem that I recommend people opening up Two browsers.... viewing the thread on one...and listening to the video on the other in the background...

Guess you're channeling the white in you... the proper spelling of NWA is Niggaz With Attitude.
Was Compton the same 40 years ago as it was in 1986, when the group was founded?
Bonus points if you can name the three other members of NWA besides Eazy, Dre, Ren, Cube and Yella.
And Nacho, you sure do have some lyrical skills! :D

I do not question what my brothers say about who they grew up with living in compton.... I'm just happy I have re-united with them after 28 years.
One is a former Marine and the other is now a Cop... so I'm very proud that what ever they did in their pasts... they have grown up to be productive members today.

This is something that I wish would improve on HT: the ability to edit our words indefinitely.
As time goes on and this particular internet community grows and evolves (as everything will), I might come to a point where I wish I hadn't shared my medical information, or my kids' names and pictures, or some strong opinion that later on I changed my mind about.
We never know tomorrow's consequences, and even if I post here in a deliberately guarded condition, the fact is that over time I give out a wealth of information that in its cumulative could give any stalker a lot of candy. Or embarrass my loved ones, because I chose to share their experiences in my life without realizing the full effect of how much of *their* personal information is on the internet, defaulted so because I had my itch to share that day.
I think the problem is a testament to the more beautiful sides of our culture: wanting to share. But we need help in safeguarding against the weirdos and future employers whose catberts prowl the internet spying on us.

and I'm not really down right now or then.... just bummed that some people don't understand my humor at times... I also felt it was important to let other HT users know that you weren't being racist... poking fun at me...etc... and that it was truly genius in what you through together...

Anyway, as has been noted elsewhere, our friendly neighborhood graffiti artist has left the building (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showpost.php?p=106314&postcount=175). Let's not give him the satisfaction of affording any more attention. Mahalo!

The topic in that thread didn't call for any kind of attack whatsoever - it was a simple question, not an issue for debate. But as is so often the case, someone had to come in and derail it with an irrelevant, obnoxious and snide comment, which then leads others down the same rat-hole.

I didn't "attack" anyone. I posted my opinion about how I felt about the topic being discussed.

I stand corrected. I didn't want to debate the topic, but rather the purpose of the thread.
I don't pay attention to "reputations" here on HT, so whether or not you're inferring that Palolo Joe's someone that whines about others derailing threads is not important to me. He just happened to have an opinion of that thread that I shared.
Chances are that thread will continue despite Mahi Wana's claims that no one else will want to post their lists because of my "negativity". Oh well -- I won't be losing sleep about it.
I just find it odd that someone would be called an "azzhole" for expressing an unpopular opinion here. What's the point of even posting if you can't post what you want without fearing that your head'll get chewed off?

Maybe it's because I'm new, come on here sporadically, or only look at threads that are "mean-free", but it never even crossed my mind that HT was too mean until now. And after reading this thread.... yeah, maybe it is too mean.
Personally, I've never been attacked or felt like someone on here was being mean to me in HT, and even if they were, it doesn't seem like a big deal. It's just a message board, and I don't expect everyone to agree with my opinion. Course now that I just said that, I'll prolly get flamed.

Yep so far Hawaii Threads seems to be pretty tame to me. I like it.
It allows for thoughtful discussion on topics that might not otherwise be discussed in Hawaii. I never ever speak my mind in public or company outside my close friends on issues that are discussed here.

Meh... HT isn't any meaner than any other sites on the WWW. The Internet in general can be an extremely mean place. It's cause people interact with each other without having to "face" one another so inhibitions are lost and consequenses of ones words have virtually no meaning to them. Plus there aren't enough emoticons out there to show how people intend for their words to be meant 100% of the time. So take the addage "There's an a$$hole in every crowd" and imagine the crowd to be the entire world and figure out how many a$$holes there are lol.
That said. I too have seen places way meaner than HT. HT is a good place to me.:D

No messageboard should be considered mean. If you're catching feelings over quips and arguments on the Internet, God help you. And if you're letting someone get under your skin, you're just giving them that much credit and helping them develop and e-rep. I see a lot of arguments on this board getting personal. The boards should be anonymous, except to admin. If you do something to reveal your identity and get flamed, it's on you, on you, on YOU.
On another note, whatever happened to being able to express your feelings, views, and stance on issues? Or having fun? People are being coerced into conforming in one way or another, leaving a really bland (and sometimes bitter) taste in the media and art.
WindwardOahuRN
November 26th, 2006, 11:51 AM
I think that sometimes people post on forums hoping for validation of their beliefs. When met with anything less they interpret it as meanness.
They have a plan/idea/etc and fully believe it is wonderful. They toss it out on a forum and, in response, may get cautionary tales or the pointing out of fatal flaws in their plans/ideas/etc. No matter how gently it's done it is seen as a crushing blow of nastiness.
Hence the occasional pouting on the "Islands Ahoy" forum. :p

you want to talk mean, geez about half a decade ago Mel's website was getting pretty harsh with some really immature posters making absolutely slanderous remarks about others who work in the media. Just outright lies that could affect peoples careers.
I ended up finding out one of those people that slandered me and wrote her a scathing email. She ended up apologizing saying she was only having fun. Fun is one thing, lying and hurting people's reputations is wrong.
There is a fine line between having fun and being hurtful. Those who cannot understand that really need to look at themselves and wonder what kind of person they've become or have been.
It's easy to hide behind an anonymous name and take shots at people, but when they are identified...the rules of engagement change and they suddenly wise up.
Some message boards can track IP addresses and I remember when one guy blasted one of the PM's at CC. the IP address routed back to one of the computers in the Jock Lounge at CC Iwilei. A simple check of the time of the posting pretty much identified the person who posted it because the electronic pass keys that you use to gain entry into the studios record that user's name and time of entry/exit.

Hey Donk... oh, wait. If I write that word it might come across as a "personal attack" by one overzealous moderator.
Hey Damon. Do me a favor. Don't be nice anymore. Do something to get yourself banned.
Besides, you've got your own sandbox. Go play in it.

I cant wait to see you in my Hale/sandbox PJ. (lurking somewhere?)
I welcome all people... even you... your welcome to come have a brew with me sometime...
but you start up the way you do here... I pleasantly escort you back to your hut.
My sandbox is my sandbox and I close it when the rain comes so there is no Mud involved.
I don't take personal stabs at people and I keep it on a respectful level.
Your welcome to come attempt to toss around some sand in my playbox....
Just be cool.... that's all I ask PJ... and maybe someday we can have a beer together and get over your grief.... but until then...
Have a Merry Christmas Charlie Brown

Don't have any desire to waste my time. And I love the veiled threats and insults you continue to post. Guess you save all that spew for HT.
Just have to get the last word in, don't you?
Like I said, please do something to get yourself banned. It'd be a pleasant change.

I was wondering which thread you two would decide to duke it out for-reals.
Mānoa - what would life be like without a PJ to scrap with? PJ, what would life be like without a mānoa to make fun of? Is it better to be the campus bully or the campus clown? Why do you have to be completely right and the other completely wrong? Is that usually the case when dealing with situations on the unplugged street?
Yes, i’m not a mod, so piss on me because i’m butting in. i can take it, if it means you two can shake hands. Hey, today’s a landmark day. The sun will be up soon. Whattaya know? 65 mean anything to ya?
Peace in da middle east. And other stupid sayings that might come true.
One day. ;)

It would be like it was before July... take a shot at me, and I'll take a shot of my own in return.
I started on HT a year before Damon showed up, and I'll continue to post here after he leaves (as he promises to do in 2007... but I don't believe it).
And yes, I am well-aware of the importance of Dec. 7.

I'll be signing off for good. It seems my posts have been reported to admin as being offensive. What I find offensive is the blatant racism in HT. A lot of white kids from my generation sacrificed to fight for the rights of minorities, women, gays, and the disabled. Society is more open and fair because of it. Rednecks and white supremacists are my enemy, too. It is insulting to be grouped in with them as an FN haole. (Funny how that term is OK to use here.)
On the Big Island, I had an AJA boss who told me 'all flips look the same.' I don't think all Japanese are racists because of it. Unfortunately, HT is an accurate microcosm of the islands, which is why a left. You have turned paradise into hell.

White race? What's that? Can I call the rest of them browns and yellow now? ;)
I've found both the blatant racism and overt discussions of race and ethnicity to be instructive and refreshingly honest. Meaning, instead of people snickering and whispering behind their hands about it like they do most places, they just come out and say f'n haole if that's what they're thinking. Honesty is a first step towards healing.
And yeah, being one of the "good guys" gets you nothing unfortunately. That's how it is in the world. I'm a good cyclist (obey traffic laws, ride defensively, watch out for making cars' lives easier too, etc) but I still get yelled at and cut off. I'm a good driver, watching out for bikes too, and again I get yelled at sometimes and generally lumped with the evil car brigade. (This is a bigger deal here than in some places...) I have a lot of friends in Texas (say, the whole city of Austin :)) who vote Democrat, but get lumped in with the Republicans by others because of the whole state going red during presidential elections.
*shrug* <- You do what you can when you can, and the rest of the time you ainokea and move on. :D Anything else is a recipe for frustration.

Racism is blatant at HT and throughout the Islands. Of that, there is no doubt. But you have to realize that racism and ignorance run hand in hand. Perhaps that explains the reasoning behind the court decision on Kam Schools.
Ignorance is nearly a religion in Hawaii.

PJ, luckily you don't have to wait for someone to get "banned" to be rid of them. You can do as I do, and use the "igonore" option on HT. It helps weed out from your day the posters who post offensively online, and also the ones who post offensive PMs.

Perhaps that explains the reasoning behind the court decision on Kam Schools.Your cause and effect explanation makes no sense, since the court decision on Kamehameha Schools did not occur in “the lslands.” The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is in San Francisco. And the court made it clear what their reasoning (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/dailypix/2006/Dec/05/120506court.pdf) was, as they always do despite timkona-style speculation and presumptions.

Yep ignorance at it's best. Tim I cannot imagine your knowledge on the laws of the land is higher than the 9th US Court of Appeals. But since you believe so I have just assume that you are one of those many idiots you mention. Yep lucky you live Hawaii.

Since when is blatant racism "refreshing"??
Just because you have the gonads to say your racist doesn't make it OK...it just makes a good excuse to continue.
Just because it is racism against "white" instead of any other color doesn't make it less wrong! Or less offensive....
I have enough respect for others not to call ANYONE f'n "whatever" and being grouped into f'n haole...I do not find honest or refreshing.

One of my favorite things about HT (and hey, this is actually on-topic :)) is how no matter how I phrase something, someone is gonna interpret it in the worst possible light :D
Of course all racism is horrible. What would you rather have though, a person holding it in and building up their resentment (and maybe having it turn into violence later), or getting it out and maybe actually discussing things and coming to some sort of understanding? Ending ignorance depends on knowledge, and knowledge depends on communication. "Hey, that guy really isn't all that different than me after all..." I know it's not likely with such a heated topic but without communication on the subject it's not possible to start healing these things at all.

In a way you are correct Bard. Better to be able to see your enemy rather than let them covertly sneak up to you and assault your integrity.
At least when a person is open about their position you know where they're coming from as opposed to those who are "two-faced".

Thanks Craig, that's what I meant exactly. I'd rather know up front, that's the honesty part of it. And who knows, maybe they have some issue that we could work out.
On the flip side, maybe if they hadn't said anything to begin with and kept associating with me, they would find out over time that I'm OK (or not OK :)) in spite of preconceptions, and things would work out better.
Tough issue...

The 9th Circuit Court is notoriously the most liberal in all the land. It's a well known fact that liberal philosophy embraces racism at its' core using unique entitlement and historical vagaries as the justification.
There is really no "fair" way to explain Affirmative Action, Hiring Quotas, or the Kam School Admission policy. You can find a Japanese Chamber of Commerce, a Black Firefighters League, Latino Student Unions, etc etc.
But I have never hear of the United White College Fund, or a school that gives preference to white students first.
Where is the ACLU on this one? Oops I forgot. They are primarily a liberal cause, and embrace racism, staying true to party lines.

You never know, Tim. Maybe when Hispanics are the predominant ethnicity in this country, you can go set up a United White College Fund. I might even contribute to it to help preserve the white culture.;)
I'm sorry, but white folk have taken advantage of minorities in this country for a long, long t
