Mix Plate in Kailua Kona. Ono plate lunch.

Super J's in Honaunau. LauLau with poi and lomi salmon. True authentic.

Adrianas in Capt Cook. Mexican from a real El Salvadoran. Good Burritos.

Hmmm, November...that could be wet...or maybe not. You never know.

Do you want to see the real hawaii, or the tourist version? Most people just come here to sit on beaches and look at waterfalls and the generic tourist stuff like they could anywhere else in the world. Bleh. Anything I'd recommend would require a strong pair of hiking boots, if you're interested in getting out in the wilderness and seeing the native things. Lots of wilderness high above Hilo.

Pretty much everything in Ka'u is worth seeing, except for some of the accursed cow pastures. Volcano house sounds like a nice location.

Volcano to Kailua is...uh, about 100 miles? You can get it from Google Maps. Give it a couple hours. Some of the road is straight and fast, and some is winding 35MPH.

Best restaurant in Hilo is Miyo's. Japanese-influenced place. Pahoa is a fun place to go for dinner in the evening.

My Hilo experience is kind of out of date (mid to late 70's) but Ken's Pancake House is worth a trip any time of the day since it is a 24 hour place and is kind of close to the Hilo airport. It is also on the road that leads to the volcano.

Don't know the status of Cafe 100, Leongs or K's Drive Inn.

Leung's near the airport is old school Hilo. Super yummy.
Volcano House to Kailua-Kona town is 2 hours, or 85 minutes if you drive like me. Don't be afraid to go at least 64 mph on the straight parts.
Pahoa has The Godmother. Most excellent Italian-style.

I would be careful to ease off the pedal in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.Since it is federal park, the park rangers do speed enforcement. It is best advised to stay around the speed limit in the park.

Isn't that defunct? I thought that place was before Clementes, which is also defunct. Some people seem to like Paolo's in Pahoa, if you have the money.

At least for a couple of those the status would be "artery clogging".

I'm going to the Hilo this Sunday with my sister helping her move in. What would be the cheapest rental car that can be picked up from an airport for a day?

I second the notion on Ken's.Their Teriyaki Combo is ONO !Sweet Bread French Toast for breakfast ! Just be prepared to NOT find parking...It's always crowded and the lot is small.

Bear's Coffee for breakfast (when you want a change from Ken's)

Ocean Sushi on Kiluea Ave is really great sushi and Cheep too. Some really unique rolls, they have.

                              Kuhio Grill. Excellent Local kine.

                              Volcano House breakfast buffet...awesome.

Also, when you go check out Akaka Falls (and you probably will),eat at that little Pizza place in town (Honomu) on the way. Pizza there is great.
