I got a bone to pick with Hawaiian Telcom Wireless. They want to charge me $25 port-out fee that they said I agreed to. I have 3 lines so thats $75+tax!
Anyone else had this problem with them? Were you able to get this waived? If you are with them, were you aware of this charge they say everyone agreed to? They also do not pro-rate the last month. These things are supposed to be found in the customer agreement.
I have a executive email list that I have been emailing, as well as filing a complaint with BBB and FCC.
Its not illegal for them to charge a port out fee according to the FCC, but it should IMO.
Please post a comment if you are HTW customer or were charged with these BS fees!

i'm not saying it's nice, but all those details are in your T&C's (terms and conditions) and there are announcements in the bills for certain fees. All the stuff we never read or agree too because it's 10 pages long, etc...

It's never illegal for a company to charge fees for different things, they have to get FCC and PUC approval to charge fees.

Customers may not like it, but that doesn't make it illegal. why should it be illegal?

The good thing is there is plenty of competition, so if you don't like it, you can always use someone else. But make sure you read the fine print closely. There's always a gotcha no matter what company.

One of the reason why I did away with Hawaiiantel. Beside all the hidden fee`s and freak`n rude customer servive agents, your best bet is to dump the dam company and go get Verizon. And yes I did go to action-line and the BBC.
That`s why they keep losing customers. Keep it up Hawaiiantel, your history in my book!!!

sorry, i posted a reply the other day but i got a 500 internal server error.
              hi all
port-out fee (which nextel also charged or still charges) is this: no company can block you from porting your number from your house number to a cell or in this case HTW to AT&T, (though sometimes it takes from 2 hours up to 2 weeks). in this case my port over to AT&T took 3 days.
companies CAN charge you, however for port-out or even port-in, and HTW claims that I agreed to this.
i fought them and i won, they are dropping the port-out fees ($25x3 cell phone lines + tax = $82.xx), but I had to email carpet bomb the executive board, complain to BBB and complain to FCC. i already paid the non-pro rated last months bill, so i gave that battle up.
for the record, i didnt get rude customer service, even though i eventually got cranky and was a little bit rude. i did try to switch from RR to DSL but there were so many fees and hoops that i didnt go thru with it. eventually my problem got fixed so im glad i didnt go thru HT DSL.

i know, but we are talking about a contract, and if they change things (even something as small as the price of text messaging) they are breaking your contract. if your provider does this, you can break contract with no termination fees.

im going to admit something totally retarded now.
i owned a company that sold tmobile, nextel, and mobi. eventually we tried to sell hawaiian telcom wireless under another master dealer. i signed up 3 lines thru my master dealer but was unaware of any port-out fees and no prorated last month billing.
they know i was a sub-dealer, which made my fight harder, but they have no proof that i received, read, or acknowledged these fees as its in a separate book that supposedly came with the phone. (btw, if you have any htw phones, you can sell them very easily on craigslist). i signed that i agreed to pay an ETF (early termination fee) of $200 (btw, california just ruled that ETF's are illegal and that sprint must pay back millions in a class action lawsuit last month... i dont know the specific law they used, but hooray for all those people that had to pay ETF's), i agreed to pay the pro-rated price for the first month, and all that other junk.

score one for the little guy.

I'm curious what hidden fees and hoops were imposed on you that precluded you getting HT DSL ? They do offer dry DSL service for all grades of DSL they offer. In other words you would get strictly DSL service and not have to pay for a landline. For example, I recall someone posting on here that they pay $36.45 for a dry 3Mbps DSL service. The other service tiers it is only 5.00 more + tax to get dry DSL.

well about 2 years ago my dad let some kid live here, he was using torrents and it was chewing up my bandwidth, so i wanted to get my own service. at the time clearwire required a contract (and wouldnt be able to handle my gaming needs) so i called HT about DSL.
i dont recall exact prices but i remember that it was over $200 to get it started plus a 2 week wait (for installation). if i recall correctly, i think the CSR said that it would cost $60 to activate the DSL/setup fee, $99 for point to point something, another $99 for a tech to come out to ensure that the 1 jack we would need would be turned on, plus a contract. and at the time i think you had to get a land line, so that made no sense at all. again i might be off on the numbers but i do remember that it was just too difficult and costly to do. sure RR has a wait too but no contract.

instead i configured the router to block out P2P on his box =)

I think the CSR was sadly mistaken. I've had Verizon/HT DSL since April 2004.
At no point I recall there was any significant setup fee. On top of that they
never had any contracts. You had to commit to them for a year to get the
lower price (e.g 29.99 instead of 37.99 for 3Mbps service).

HT only implemented the dry DSL service within the last year or so.

i dont really recall all the details.
anyway, the point of this thread was the suprise port-out fees and last month billing, ive been posting this as a FYI. i know they are having hard times, but this wasnt right.
after making alot of noise they conceded the port out fees, and i compromised on the last month billing.
                        thanks for reading.

I hate to say something negative. But nonetheless I would bet these fees were probably detailed in the fine print in the contract you signed. You know the really tiny text at the bottom of the document that no one reads.

On that note, if you are not sure what happened when you tried to get HT DSL why did you post it ? Whenever I post something I try to be damn sure
                          its accurate.
