  • MAUI or HAIR?

I auditioned for Kumu Kahua Theatre's upcoming play Maui The Demigod and was offered a role in the chorus. Manoa Valley Theatre has Hair auditions coming up. Unfortunately, both shows run at the same time in March (2 weeks overlap). I would love to do both but have to choose...

I love the music in Hair and have been waiting six months for the auditions, ever since I found out that MVT was doing the musical. I am so ready to just go in there and belt out "This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius... Age of Aquarius..."

Maui speaks to my cultural and spiritual side and I'll get to work with an amazing cast and help to tell the stories that I heard when I was a child. I'll also get to learn and perform hula and oli.

They're both great opportunities and I'm so torn... can anyone offer any guidance before I am forced to flip a coin? This is worse than trying to decide whether I'm Team Edward or Team Jacob!

You could ask each theatre group which of their production has the likey hood of being repeated sometime in the future.

Choose the one you've been waiting the longest for, otherwise it may never come this way again.

Thanks for the input so far. The last time Maui was performed was in 1992. Hair is a 'classic' and COULD be done again locally in the near future. Another possible tipping point is that I can only do Maui here - it's a uniquely Hawaiian interpretation of Maui's story. Hair could be and has been done anywhere in the world.

The Hair auditions are Dec. 14 and 15 at MVT.

At this point, I'm just planning to audition for Hair and see what happens. If I am privileged enough to get a part, then I will really have to make a decision. So, until then, I'm still open to suggestions.

Is there a deadline date for accepting Maui? If you haven't already accepted and that date is after the Hair auditions then I'd do exactly what you stated above. Just put it all out there and see what comes back!

Thanks again for the suggestions. I did try for both plays and I was offered the role of Dionne in HAIR so I ended up declining the offer for Maui The Demigod.

The deciding factor was that I will get to sing Aquarius and White Boys - two of my fave songs!

I feel so privileged to have been a part of both productions and hope that you will all support local community theater by going to see Maui and Hair.

MAUI THE DEMIGOD plays at Kumu Kahua Theater
March 18 - April 18: Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. (No show Sunday, April 4, because of Easter)

March 4 - April 18: Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 4pm.

Hair is my favorite theatrical experience, KD. Congrats. I've marked my calendar.
