  • Lingle runs for US Senate

For those of you who listen to KSSK, Linda Lingle has announced that she's running. I'm sure she's got a uphill battle, but that would be nothing new for her.

I felt she did a good interview and tackled the "Furlough Friday" legacy head-on. She had no choice but to cut budgets. The furloughs were DOE's response.

While not mentioned, I'm sure what's happened on Abercrombie's watch shows that it wasn't so easy a problem to solve.

Abercrombie assured me he was all about industrial hemp, not a peep yet..., we'd eventually be in great shape just from that lone investment.

    Lingle? pfft!

Normally, I would give Lingle a 50/50 chance of winning it all, but considering how weak the Democratic field is for Akaka's seat, I would say she has a pretty good chance. It will all depend on how much voters blame her for her blunders.

We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.

Yeah, but her response to the furlough protestors was nothing short of a PR disaster.

Once again, the issue was not about settling the public school furlough immediately, but the way in which Lingle utterly stonewalled the protestors and ignored their raised hands at that infamous press conference.

Town halls, talk story sessions,.... all of these campaign events are designed to project the impression that a political candidate actually listens and cares about what the constituents have to say. In Lingle's case,.... why bother with all that? The voters in Hawaii have seen what her true colors are when faced with a crisis situation.

With Obama's name on the ballot in 2012, I give Lingle a 5% chance. I don't care if the nation's economy tanks and Obama is a one-term president. He's going to win the vote in Hawaii, and win it by a large margin. That will provide the coattails for whoever are the Democratic nominees for Congress and Senate. This spells trouble for the likes of Lingle and Djou.

Call me dense, but I don't see the connection. Yes, we're a heavily Democratic state which is going to give Lingle a run for it, but I don't see how Obama's name is going to change anything. I think his magic is gone. He's just a Democrat, not a magical one that pulls in the masses like he did last time.

Obama will win Hawai‘i, but by what margin is up for debate. The attitudes are changing — particularly on O‘ahu — where “Google Ron Paul” signs are cropping up all over town (and no, I didn’t put them there). For all Lingle’s criticism of pandering to national politics last go-round, this year, it will result in payback. The GOP wants the U.S. Senate really bad, and after gaining a sizeable majority in the U.S. House, that is all that stands in their way of controlling Congress. Suffice to say, Lingle will get a near limitless lifeline of support, and will not have to worry about her moderate message being thwarted by Jonah Ka‘auwai. Meanwhile, Hirono and Case will bloody themselves duking it out in the primary.

Anyone who even thinks Ron Paul has a chance of beating Obama in Hawaii,... I can only pity the poor souls who have been drinking that Kool-Aid.

And don't you think the Dems will likewise fight tooth-and-nail to do all they can to hang onto their control of the Senate?

In Hawaii, Dan Inouye's legion of supporters will be out in force to keep Akaka's seat on the side of the Democrats. They are more mindful than anyone else that Inouye's leadership positions (President Pro Tempore, Appropriations Chair) are all dependent on the Democrats keeping their majority in the Senate.

Lingle can fundraise however many millions of dollars that she can for her campaign. She can flood the airwaves with slick-looking "I'm Linda Lingle, and I approve this message" commercials. But when all is said and done, Inouye's network of grassroots campaigning will come out on top when it comes to getting out the votes.

Even if the GOP takes over the senate majority in 2012, mark my words. The Republican's path to victory will not include a takeaway of Akaka's seat.

Inouye is not allowing a bloodbath to happen. Recall that Ed Case voluntarily agreed to step aside in last year's Democratic Primary for CD-1, avoiding what could have been a very costly primary campaign between Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa.

And recall how Inouye chided your boy, Mufi, when he stepped out of bounds with his brochure comparing the ethnicity of his wife with opponent Neil's. You may have already forgotten that lesson, Tunnl. But the Democratic hopefuls haven't. And this is why your visions of Case and Hirono mudslinging each other to the bitter end is simply not going to happen.

I think a debate between Case and Hirono will be a very spirited and competitive one. But if one or the other does a Mufi-esque low blow,.... they're only going to end up hurting themselves and get rebuked by Inouye.
