I couldn't help but notice that KGMB is branding themselves as "your Severe Weather station." I will be laughing my ass off when this thing runs during the summer........

Of course, they could get lucky like they did in October or a severe storm like a hurricane hits....

    Re: Kgmb

In 1992 KGMB's weather service (Accuweather) missed the mark when they said Hurricane Iniki would hit Oahu but instead hit Kauai.
    I'm still here. Are you?

When my daughter came home from R&R last year, she watched KGMB"S Weather Report. Guy Hagi kept saying everyday about a Storm possibly becoming a Hurricane on it's way here. She wanted to go out and purchase items for us to be prepared...I told her, "No believe him. He always say things but it doesn't come true!" She wasn't impressed so went to the PX. Case Botle Water, Flashlights, Batteries to last a year, and can goods that I still haven't used! Guess what? Never happend. She told me, "Gosh, he shouldn't do that! I'm not going to believe him anymore!" She's to serious cause she is in Intellegence...lost her common sense, or just to trusting in what they put on the NEWS! She LEARNED. Now, her Duty Station is in Florida...that's a totally different case. I told her "Believe,Believe! Be Prepared!" She laughed but she believes.

The "Severe Weather Station" branding makes me smirk, too. I mean, I guess that's one way to "own" a news category that's among the more popular elements of any newscast... but c'mon. "Severe Weather Station" might fly in Nebraska or something, but Hawaii? Apart from the occasional hurricane, I think they're going to find it hard to generate enough excitement to justify the name and the ominous horror-film music they use...

Somewhere there's a station consultant on the mainland laughing to himself, saying, "I can't believe those bozos in Hawaii actually listened to me! And paid me for it too!!!!"

They should rethink their branding. By hearing their branding at the beginning of the newscast, I would always think they would "guarantee" put a weather report at the "start" of the newscast... like there is going to be "severe" weather at the up-coming moment. Geez! They should go back to "One of the Good Things About Hawaii."

Oh, absolutely. I miss that "One of the Good Things" branding, especially considering the long history of that station. To have gone from that to the disaster-movie synth-fest they're using now is especially tragic.

                  Re: Kgmb

I believe it was the then head of the creative service (Promotions) department Andrew who came up with that Severe Weather branding. So in this case I don't tink it was the mainland consultant. I also believe he as since quit his job there so maybe they will eventually get rid of that weather branding.

I also agree that the stations all are starting to become too mainland cookie cutter like. The "One of the good things" at KGMB you really don't hear anymore, the "Island Television" at KITV you really don't hear anymore.

On another weather note. What really is the difference between each stations weather when they all get the same information from the National Weather Service? I notice all stations numbers are nearly identical. Maybe a degree difference or 1-2 MPH difference in wind. All the doplar radar images look the same. The only difference is maybe the style of graphics they use. I do realize some of the stations have their own meters around the state, but the numbers gained from them are virtually the same as from the NWS anyway.

                    Re: Kgmb

The promotions guy may have had the idea, but the idea of "Severe Weather" and "keeping your family safe" is all over mainland weather promos. If you've ever had to sit through a tape of promos like I once did from around the country (they actually have AWARDS for these things) you'll find that everyone around the U.S., including Hawaii, shares/borrows/steals promo ideas from everyone else. Same slogans, branding, you name it.

Problem is, a lot of these things, with weather being a good example, just doesn't fly here. If you live where there is bad winter weather or tornadoes, YES, the station can help keep you safe by warning you. I don't see how Guy Hagi will keep me safe when tomorrow's weather will be partly cloudly with a few windward and mauka showers more than 90% of the year.

What constitutes "good promo"writing according to the experts, is ensuring that viewers want to stay tuned or tune in. To that end, this involves basically scaring viewers or saying, look how F&%%ed up this is, so check out our coverage of it. And it just may be an EXCLUSIVE story, or CONTINUING COVERAGE of it, or my favorite, LIVE!

For the record, a lot of things mainland consultants suggest work in other markets. However, Hawaii is an exception because of the strnglehold Joe Moore has, and everyone has been trying all kinds of things to catch channel 2 in the ratings race. Joe is an anomaly, because Fox2's style and the way they do things is very......local. The mainland people can't figure it out, so instead, we're bombarded with flying graphics and thunderous music because that's what works on the big rock. It's been like that for YEARS. How many set changes have you seen on KGMB? How many times has KITV changed their graphics? How many times have you heard the phrase LIVE, LOCAL, LATE-BREAKING? I personally am not a big fan of Joe, but I realized that there's a comfort level and familiarity when I do watch him because he's been there so long. The other stations will keep chasing their tails until the day Joe calls it quits.

                      Re: Kgmb

Refresh my memory, there was another hurricane scare, maybe the year after Iniki, when KGMB went on a limb and said it was gonna hit -- all while the other stations said it wasn't happening. I remember the fallout at KGMB was so bad, it was what helped force Bob Jones out.

                          weather forecasters

man, they are wrong so often it's almost laughable.

i'm sure they're nice people but their batting average is pretty bad! i recall many years ago when some weather person had the bad idea of keeping score. that didn't last cuz their score was soooooo bad and he/she was just making an okole out of themselves. i can just see the guys/gals in a meeting saying, "who's stupid idea was that?!?!?"
525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear. 525,600 minutes - how do you measure, measure a year?
