Re: Oldies competitor just arrived in Honolulu

As I flip between Oldies 101.1 and 107-9 Hawaii's Kool Gold, I notice that the former concentrates on 1960s and 1970s music, while the latter includes 1980s music. Thus, 107-9 Hawaii's Kool Gold...

KORL 101.1 just switched from Hot AC "Mix 101.1" to Oldies "Oldies 101.1." The station will compete against 107-9 Hawaii's Kool Gold KKOL.

Re: KTUH Moving

I just heard that the move to 90.1 FM to achieve island-wide coverage is being delayed until mid-March, which is a very long time to wait. Please sign my petition to expedite the island-wide coverage...

Re: If KNAN 106.7 permanently goes on the air ...

It sounds like KNAN is featuring a commercial-free Hot AC format right now. They are even explicitly announcing that they are commercial-free. It will compete with Mix 101.1 KORL.

Re: KTUH Moving

Because KTUH is about to get an island-wide signal, the college station will IMHO be more like Oahu Community Radio. Kauai has their community radio station (Kauai Community Radio KKCR 90.9 & KAQA...

Re: KTUH Moving

From what i've heard, KTUH will move to 90.1 in late December or early January with an island-wide signal. They have already discontinued the 89.9 Windward translator in preparation for the switch.

Oahu radio update - KORL 97.1 and KHAI 103.5

KORL 97.1 is no longer playing J-Pop music. It has been replaced with Boom 97.1 classic hip hop. Also, KHAI 103.5 in Wahiawa has a much stronger signal and will switch to K-LOVE on July 7. The Air 1...

Re: KSSK - IMO there's room for improvement

To this day, KSSK AM 590 is still simulcasting FM 92.3. This is getting old. I just thought of another format that AM 590 could do: Smooth Jazz. In Philadelphia, iHeartMedia has Smooth Jazz on the AM...

KHAI 103.5 vs the old KIPO 89.3

I have been listening to Air 1 KHAI 103.5, and the signal is pretty weak here in Waipahu. KHAI 103.5 is in Wahiawa with a power of 2,200 watts, so I think the station is similar to the old KIPO 89.3...

If KNAN 106.7 permanently goes on the air ...

... I want them to feature smooth jazz. Right now they are testing with a classic hits format. Smooth jazz is a missing format. If I want classic hits, I'll tune to 107-9 Hawaii's Kool Gold.

Question When KIPO was a small station

The last time Hawaii Public Radio was doing their pledge drive, the folks on HPR-2 were reminding listeners when HPR-2 was just KIPO, the small station (3,000 watts) in West Oahu. In the early 1990s,...

Unhappy Smooth Jazz really left Honolulu this time

It looks like "Jazz Nights" has been discontinued on KPHI 96.7 FM/1130 AM. That means Honolulu is completely without a Smooth Jazz outlet. I am a huge Smooth Jazz fan. HPR 2 (KIPO/KIPM/KIPH/KHPH)...

KSSK - IMO there's room for improvement

Lightbulb More Honolulu stations should utilize HD technology for niche formats

With KORL FM 101.1 utilizing HD technology for niche formats, e.g., smooth jazz on KORL HD2, Korean pop on KORL HD3, and Japanese pop on KORL HD4, I think more Honolulu stations should utilize HD...

Honolulu sure could use a 24-hour jazz station

Once in a while, I listen to Jazz with Don Gordon on KIPO 89.3. Mr. Gordon's mix of jazz includes some smooth jazz tracks and adult standards. Last night at 11:28 PM, Mr. Gordon played "It's a Blue...
