  • Re: More old Commercials anyone remember these?

I was singing this old jingle in my head the other day.

"Who put the fun in cookies and crackers? Diamond Jim! Diamond Jim!"

    From a mid-70's commercial....

In case anyone hasn't seen them yet, the Lex Brodie tire company website has posted up some vintage commercials. Even by early 1970s standards, these TV spots were pretty basic. No fancy visuals, graphics, or slick-sounding spokesperson. Just the Little Joe sign with the mechanized arm, handwritten placards, and Lex with his deadpan delivery. But oh, how effective they were in generating business with Hawaii drivers. And yes. Lex's superior customer service was what inspired loyalty and return business.

Ironically, the person who performed that famous caveman "clank, clank, clank" sound effect on the Lex Brodie commercials just got laid off a couple days ago.
The sound was simply a box wrench banging on the concrete floor of the KGMB-TV studio.

That was Hawaii Dental Service, if I remember correctly. Also, if I remember correctly, former broadcast newsman Ed Michelman (unsure of spelling) did the voice over. I could be wrong on that, but that's what I hear in the commercial replay in my head.

And wasn't it actually "Auntie Myrtle K. Hilo" that sang the jaunty jingle? Unsure.

Now that this thread has been revived, here's a few more local commercials from the '70s, featuring then-national celebrities.

Richard Anderson (Oscar Goldman in the Six Million Dollar Man) making a sales pitch for housing lots in Makakilo.

Dick Van Patten (patriach in Eight Is Enough) promoting Aston Resorts and telling everyone he wished he was a kama'aina.

Brian Keith (Family Affair, Hardcastle & McCormick) spokesperson for a bank I don't recall anymore. Does anyone remember? He did a few in this vein, including one where he's chauferring a couple of kids in his car and is charging them via a taxi meter.

I have the ads with Richard Anderson and Brian Keith. I believe the kids are his own in that ad. Pat Morita also did ads, but can't recall who it was for?

I cast one spot Pat appeared in for First Hawaiian Bank. A couple is getting ready in their bathroom and Pat appears from behind the shower curtain. This was approximately 1994.

Pat was doing FHB commercials for many years. I distinctly recall one spot he did when ATMs were still new to the islands. It showed him nervously walking up to the OTTO teller, with an off-screen voice coaching him on carrying out his first transaction. This must have been sometime in the mid-'70s.

The aformentioned likes of Morita, Anderson, and Keith filmed their commercials spots in Hawaii. But prolific pitchman extraordinaire Jim Varney filmed several for First Federal Savings from out of his base in Nashville, just as he did for hundreds of other companies back in the 1980s. Here's one of them.

First Federal has since merged with Bank of Hawaii.

David Letterman just did a bit about funnier with fat guy music to the image of NJ Gov Chris Christy.
I remember a local commercial small kid time with a group of overweight ladies marching to circus music. That would be so not PC today.

Does anyone remember the old OLD Dai'ei commercial with Kikaida?

"Kikaida, where are you going today?"

                            "I going to Daiei"

                            "I no let go!"

That jingle is still heard on the radio, by the way. But with the more politically correct "Kenny's, at the Kamehameha Center in Kalihi."
                              In the news.

Just pop in my mind when writing this. Famous Amos playing a tune about chocolate chips cookies on a kazoo.

Does anyone remember what business Frank DeLima made a commercial for where he's in hell and he tells the devil he thought it was a sauna?
