Peggy Sigmund was indeed the Wigwam lady. People have asked me to do a story on her.

After Lynn Madden quit doing BJ Furniture ads, I believe she was replaced by Susan Page.

Interview some of her former students at Kaimuki High School. Some of them will tell you very "interesting" stories about her style of teaching.

Actually, I remember at least one BJ furniture commercial that Lynn and Susan did together. I don't know if the intention of that particular commerical was for Lynn to pass the torch to Susan. But shortly after that, Lynn was no longer seen.

I remember the Wigwam commercials and the jingle. The lady that stood in the parking lot talking with the store in the background reminded me of my neighbor across the street.

Did Wigwam have those half-loops running across the front of the building, or am I thinking of another store?

I didn't remember those loops and the jingle...Your dollar buys more at the Wigwam store...WIGWAM da dada da da.

Apparently there is a website (that's under construction) for Wigwam, but I don't think it's the same business.

RE: Lynn Madden - as a high school student (Roosevelt 1966), she first gained fame as the winner of "Miss Smile," a national promotion. Even us guys in the "boonies" of Hilo heard of her.

Also, regarding Wigwam, one of the male spokesmen was GENE GOOD, a local spotscaster (Kaiser Sports Central in the early '60s) who also did sports radio play-by-play on Kauai.

Aji - Aji - Ajinomoto!
Aji - Aji - Ajinomoto!

AH - JI - NO - MO - TO!

Lyrics to a catchy 1970s jingle about MSG;

The words uttered by a man whose toe got chewed up in an escalator.

Regarding WIGWAM, I recall a chain of TOTEM stores in the Pacific Northwest which seemed to be a similar operation. I wonder if there was any connection.

I would like to see that. In a strange twist of fate, I just discovered that I work with one the gals in those spots. I also just discovered that I know one of the guys that helped film/produce those commercials too. Hawaii is such a small place. You really have to be careful about what you say about other people, eh?

The girl that suffered the tiny wardrobe malfunction is now living in China.

I'll have it up this week.

Anyone remember the weed eater commercial that aired in 1976-77?

"weedeater...weedeater...weedeater..... (in a frog-like voice)

I used to say it in class while everyone was taking a math test.

"We must buy twenty to thirty good used cars right now. .... We think you'll be pleasantly surprised how much we think your old car is worth." Al Yim. He had a car dealership located "at the top of automobile row" back in the seventies. His ad, with those words ran a gazillion times on TV.

Who was that guy who owned Atlas Building Materials? Lee Chang! I just remembered. He was on all the time too back in the seventies, except his accent always made it sound like Atrass Building Materials.

Haven't thought about those dear departed salesmen in a long time.

I was just reading back a few pages and someone asked about Bill Baist. I believe he still works full time in sales at Oceanic and does afternoon drive on KUMU.

I got into the habit of rerecording around commercials back then and I don't have it in its entirety. But you can see the girl reaching for the Sunflower Seeds.

Here it is - a bit blurry (thanks to poor youtube upload quality) and only 4 seconds of it. If you want a sharper copy (it's under 1 meg) email me.

How did that pass in the approval process? Or was it put together by a predominantly male production team? I'm thinking the latter. Why would you even have someone rollover to grab sunflower seeds anyway? My point exactly!

DIRECTOR: OK, lie on your back, and when we tell you to, rollover and grab some seeds. OK, roll the dolly (Looks to me like they used a dolly to get this shot) ACTION! NO! Try that again. ACTION! Sorry, the lighting was bad, try again. ACTION! No, I'm not feeling the performance. Guys, we're going to keep doing this until we get it right!

On a semi-related note, I somehow ended up watching a commercial spot for Club Rock-Za on Youtube. Judging from the hair, probably made in the late 80s/early 90s.

My cousin was in the one of the Exchange commercials...

...Exchange goes down, down, down and around, round, round...

I'd like to find a copy of that one...

WOW, I haven't seen that commerical in ages. What year did that run? How old was Jade back then? I always thought the girl in that commercial was a teenager but now that I'm looking at it again I'm guessing she must have been in her 20's. I also wonder if this was before she went by Jade and if she was still using her real name back then.

Lots of good memories, thanks for posting this!

Such a blast from the past! I cast that commercial in my dining room, early 1980s. Thanks for the link, tvguy.

Yep, it was taped right after Zippy's first went 24 hours. From what I recall, that commericial (as well as the early Napoleon Bakery ads) had a pretty long life on the airwaves, continuing to air into the '90s.

Jade did an outstanding job on that spot.

Another blast from the past! I cast the Napolean guy, again, early 1980s. During that time local, non-union spots could be aired ad infinitum without any reuse pay for the actors...unlike today. Successful spots continued to air. Another example is the Hawaiian Tel spots produced during the mid 80s discussed in another thread, iirc. They aired into the early 90s, at least.

...as she did during the audition! She nailed it. It's fun to watch that happen.

One of the best local beer commercials would have to be the Steinlager ad from the mid-1980s. It show one haole guy talking to a local guy, complaining about his friend who constantly beats him or one ups him on anything they do together. Then, that "friend" suddenly pops into the bar, and the haole guy tries to be generous and says, "Bartender, another of same all around." To which the friend responds, "Could you make mine a Steinlager?" And then, the haole guys mutters, "He did it to me again!"

Were you responsible for casting that commercial, Sue? If so, those actors were great. Even the local guy who had no lines. He had great facial expressions, just like Jade in the old Zippy's ad.

Hmmmm...ummmmmmm...errrrrrrr...
I remember working on a Steinlager spot, early to mid 80s. There was a bar scene with club style dancing, indicative of that era, in the background. I don't remember in what capacity I was working...casting, coordinating or continuity or a combination. I do remember, however, one local guy was an incredibly hot dancer...which is why I can't remember anything else about the spot 'cept it was shot on the west side; Paradise Cove area. The director kept fanning me!!! Oooooowheeeee, baby, ooowheee!
