What you should be doing is organizing other families around you to stock up on supplies and this will gain you three things, (1) The more stuff a group has, the least likey they will try to take away stuff from you and other groups. (2) You can always trade between groups, what you need, others may have in excess and what you have in excess others might need. (3) The concept of backups and reduncey, if not with supplies, maybe equipment that gets broken beyond repair.

What is about Katrina that has you concerned? The flooding? The phyiscal damage to the city duing the hurricane? Police officers leaving their posts during the storm? National Guard coming in late? Problems with people leaving the city before the storm hit?
Awww, helen, I live in a small French town. These people would as soon kill me, and take my preps, as to help me (or even each other) out. There's no Aloha, here...it's every man for himself. It's taken me over twenty years, to figure that out. It was better when I didn't speak their language, I could enjoy them, without knowing them.

The only people that think the same way as me, are my Dentist and the Veterinarian. Most think that BF won't ever happen, or will only happen 'somewhere else'. Or that 'they' will help the people to get by...they being the government, of course. I expect that this attitude is the same, the world over.

Katrina was such a shock, for me, because of the government's reaction...first they fought, and then red tape held up matters. The shooting at the 'good guys' was a puzzle, at first, til I figured out that it was done in frustration. And there was a Hawaiian woman there, a paramedic on a business trip, that told some hair-raising stories about what happened to them, during that time. It just got me to thinking, is all.

Every place is going to react differently to disaster. New York City had the reputation of being a mean place but yet the people came together during the aftermath of the 9/11 disaster.

It's twelve hours difference...9:45 am. I took the kids to school, and I have to get them, for lunch, at 11:30 til 1:30, then they come home at 4:30. Lunch is already cooked, and books are slow, today.

Sure they did, they had a common enemy...and nobody had a contagious disease to be afraid of.

Would ou feel better, if I didn't keep harping on, about 18 months? I could stop mentioning it so much, if you want. By the way, Arkansas has come out with an official time...they've chosen two months, food, water, meds.

Costco on Oahu carries the wind-up flashlights; 2 to a package for $20. They have a steady and a blinking mode. Great idea. I bought a bunch of 'em.

                    Re: Susie's Practical Preps

Nevermind...I wen look em up, on Google.

Now I going laugh, for the rest of the week! What WILL they think of next?! It seems expen$ive. The closest things I can think of, to Bodymint, are my neighbor and my cats.

My neighbor has had colon surgery, and has a bag strapped on to his belly, for the poop, cause da hole no more work. He takes something like that, every day, for the smells, too...and his poops are green (so I've been told).

My cats used to use a green pellet-like litter...grass cutting, I suspect, called 'Khlor".

I'm not saying that I smell, or I'd want a partner to smell...but I can understand Bonaparte. I prefer to have sex with someone that doesn't smell the same as the bar of soap, in the shower, does. A bit of human, musky odor can be a turn-on. There's French toilet paper, that comes in smells...lavender, rose, and such, and the smell lingers...yucky in bed!

I cannot say 'doo doo'...in France, that's the word for a kid's security blanket, or favorite stuffed animal. The French word is kaka.

I feel that is time that we got back to preps....

Glad to be of help, Kimo. You could even use the $$$, saved from not eating, to buy food preps, for later.

Cause this prep stuff, it IS costly. And it takes so much time! Or maybe not, where you live...we have no Costco or Walmart, over here. I've never even seen one, although I'd like to.

We only get little places, even the supermarkets aren't as big, as I remember the Safeway in Makiki being. Plus you gotta go all over, to get the best deals.

And den, come homen go to bed....and think of something else you just remembered! Or look on the internet, and get one other idea.

Whattaya drink? Besides Mountain Dew? And Coke by the litre? Milk? Juice? Fruit drinks? Tang? (does Tang even still exist?) Koolaid? Malolo syrups? V8? Hard Cider? Beer? Whiskey? Coffee? Hot chocolate with marshmallows? Smoothies? Wine?

How many of those drinks would you be willing to drink warm? How many of thos drinks need something else in them, to make them good...sugar, cream, sweetener, rum? That's another something to think about, nights, should you not be able to sleep.

Think of what you like to drink (or eat), and list everything that goes into doing it. Then add that to your prep list. Stupid list...it never finishes, or even gets smaller!

When you go to buy drinks (or food), mind what container they come in. Unless you're going to finish off an entire litre, in one go, you might want to pay a bit more, and buy smaller units...that way you'll be able to treat yourself to something, now and again, without having the rest go bad, or flat.

Over here, alot of our products now come in those brick-like tetra-pacs. Even milk comes like that...unopened, it lasts for about six months, once opened, it's just like fresh, gotta put em in the fridge or use it up. Juice, too, and soup...no cans of condensed Campbells, here.

Those bricks are nice to have around...but they don't last for as long as cans do. And they damage easily. And if you have a smart cat, you'll have less milk, and more drips to wipe up. I don't EVEN wanna guess if cockaroaches know how to nibble on them. Mice do. So do rats.

Bottles and cans, on the other hand, work out just fine. Maybe bottles are really better, for all the humidity in Hawaii.

If plain water is for you, then all the better. Of course, it might not taste so great, after having been stored, or bleached. Maybe some Malolo syrup or Koolaid would help.

It goes on sale at Long's for under $10. And the directions indicate needing to take 2 tablets a day. One tablet a day truly is sufficient! So...under $10 for a 2 month supply...that's $90.
