  • Recommend a volcano tour?

A friend and I are planning on visiting the Big Island at the end of the month and we'd really like to see the lava flow. Our only problem is that we don't drive, so we can't rent a car, and as I understand it the bus won't take us up there. So our only other option would be a tour. Can anyone recommend an affordable one? Bonus points if they offer kamaaina or student rates.

    Thanks!

If you want to see the lava flows up close you can't beat either the boat or helicoptor tours. They are very pricey though.

I highly recommend the helicopter tour. You'll see all there is to see!

Hawaii Forest and Trail has tours.

But, they are not cheap tours. For the price of tours by bus/van or helicopter or boat, you might consider instead to offer to take another friend with you who can drive and rent a car. And don't forget that the lava is NOT always visible. You might get to the Big Island only to discover that the flow is not accessible that day. So, make sure you have a back up plan of fun alternative things to do.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

I agree these trips are definately not cheap. Even the bus trips can run about a hundred dollars. Right now the only ways to get up close to a lava viewing is to go by boat or by helicopter. If you want to hike in you'll still be kept about a half mile back, but it's free.

If you want a volcano tour and you're willing to pay for gas I can take you through the park and the backside where the hike is. Let me know!
