  • KHON Outage

KHON 5p news has been knocked off the air due to "electrical problems". It actually went down about 4:25 or so. The station is airing an old Oprah episode instead. This untechie tutu wants to know why, if there are electrical problems that prevent live programming, why doesn't that affect taped programs? Oh wait...the regularly scheduled 4p-5p Oprah program was affected, too. Everything went black. They even had trouble keeping the station's logo up.

Re: Is Fox News popular in Hawaii?

Live programming, especially the news, would be affected because most stations have computerized newsrooms. Stories, footage, audio are all loaded into servers for playback. Electrical problems can cause the servers to reset or even lose all the material.

KHON as it has been widely reported, uses an automated Incite system for its live news. One person controls all the cameras, graphics, audio, teleprompter, etc. Loss of power would throw the system completely off, and the station no longer has any humans as backup!

They apparently had to drop both their 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. newscasts. Joe Moore opened the 6 p.m. newscast with the studio phone to his ear, shouting, "Jack! Jack! Forget about that nuclear device. The terrorists have gotten to our power system somehow! Jack!" He then took a little longer than neccessary to explain, basically, that something fall down go boom.

Definitely their totally computerized, automated system was a factor in having to write off the earlier newscast, even though power was restored in time. All kinds of systems had to be restarted and several buttons had to be pressed!

Their system is buggy more often than not, frankly. Poor Joe is left staring awkwardly into the camera, waiting for a "tape" to roll, at least thirty total seconds a week.
