  • So, what's up with KHVH?

Half the time it's cool, with www.coasttocoastam.com all night, but...

...the morning's and day's are nothing but these 3 bazoobs talking stink about so-called liberals/the left and having an obvious conservative slant, putting a negative/republican spin on so many topics that to me is out of touch with reality and especially the much changing political climate.
Does anybody buy into what Hamada, Buck, and Bolin spew so often? I find their style of biased talk and commercials offensive.
How do they rate a show that is all day/every day and so one-sided? Are all Clear Channel talk programs like this?
They try to mask it in various way's to fool the casual listener, but it always ends up the same.

I'm glad I'm busy when they are on.

Re: So, what's up with KHVH?

There are other radio stations on the dial. If you don't like the programs at KHVH or their sister station KHBZ, you can always turn the dial to something else. KCCN 1500 AM had some liberal programs, though they lean now mostly to sports talk. KIPO and KHPR are oasis of liberal talk, mostly KIPO.

So yes, KHVH and KHBZ (as well as KHNR down the dial owned by Salem) are conservative programmed stations. KHVH is the top talk station in the Hawaii market if you go by the ratings. Of course talk radio is not very big in Hawaii to begin with. In reality, KSSK FM & AM which plays mostly music, and concentrates most of their talk stuff with the Perry & Price show M - Sat., is the market leader as most know. So people who do not like Rick Hamada can always go there... and they indeed have a larger audience.

According to the last Arbitrons KHVH was not in the top 10 overall and they rarely are. But as a talk radio format, they are the consistent market leader. So obviously there are people (like me) who listen to the station(s) regularly.

Again, no one is holding a gun to anyone's head forcing people to listen to Rick, Rush, Sean, Mike or even George Noory.

You are free to turn the dial.

Talk radio stations in Honolulu Market

KHPR 88.1 FM - some talk in the morning / afternoon - All Things Considered, Morning Edition.

KIPO 89.3 FM - various talk shows scattered through broadcast day.

KSSK 590 AM & 92.3 FM - primarily AC music, but Perry & Price do a lot of talk mornings.

KHNR 690 AM - mostly syndicated conservative talk; news

      KGU 760 AM - Hawaii's Christian talk

KHVH 830 AM - News, mostly conservative talk (Rick, Rush, Sean, Mike, etc)

KHBZ 990 AM - News, conservative talk (sister station of KHVH)

KWAI 1080 AM - Talk shows; they have a variety of them. Don't know slant.

KKEA 1420 AM - Mostly sports talk, University of Hawaii sports, ESPN

KUMU 1500 AM - they had "Air America" but switched over mainly to sports talk. Direct competitor of 1420 AM down the dial.

Go here for links and info to all radio stations in Honolulu.

Mel sums it up nicely. There's conservative bias on the air, there's liberal bias on the air. It's tough to find the "no bias" stations in the world of corporate media. But it's easy to find the dial or the off-switch.

Every station knows they have an audience for their programs, and they play to that audience; if I'm not in that group, I know somebody else is. The important thing is to not depend on one single source for your information.

Straight information/discussion/news gets labeled left leaning, simply because it's not carrying right wing water buckets.

NPR has been largely devoid of hard news coverage for 2 years since the Bush administration shouted them down about being lefties when they simply brought forth the news that was really important. That it was not in the favor of this current president, just symbolizes the current state of affairs.
Now it's light weight coverage, next to nothing reflective of investigative reporting on matters that should be getting public attention.

Coast To Coast get's out real news points and discussion that most other outlets shy away from.
To KHVH's credit, they split the 24 hours evenly, giving righty's the day, and open minds the night.

I'm afraid that if "Coast To Coast AM" is being offered up as a shining beacon of reality here, there's nothing more I can add to the discussion.

Maybe not the ultimate "shining beacon of reality" because they cover a lot of topics, many that are 'out there' (a good thing), but one of the few media shows (and a pretty popular one!) that actually has topics and open discussions on very important matters concerning the American situation and it's people that don't get much/any attention elsewhere.
Show me another show, or whatever, that does that?
Our media is so hog tied to corporations and wishy washy afraid to say anything concerning truth that might offend someone/anyone that we don't get the real McCoy any more. At least CTC isn't muzzled.

Re: So, what's up with KHVH?

If they weren't a "good station", they'd have changed formats years ago. Business-wise and rating wise, KHVH has been a cash cow for CC. If the ratings for KHVH was lower, advertisers wouldn't pay to advertise on it. Advertising dollars is key to any radio station's success or failure and it seems KHVH hasn't failed yet, hence it's a success, and if being a successful radio station isn't good, then what is?

Rick Hamada has been at KHVH delivering conservative talk programming for a very long time. Apparently Hawaii likes it or he would have been out of a job years ago. Rush Limbaugh has been doing nationally syndicated conservative talk programming far longer than Rick, and apparently America likes it too or else Rush would have been out of a job long before Rick even ventured out of the cruise ship business and into the radio business.

If conservative talk radio programming weren't popular, advertisers wouldn't be flocking to fund it. Advertisers know all about market share and when it comes to that, it's all about popularity amongst radio listeners.

Whether you love conservative talk radio programming or hate it, when it comes to Arbitron diaries, America loves it enough to keep it on the air year after year, decade after decade.

Conservative talk radio is a cash cow for media corporations because it fills the need of a large population of "social conservatives," and also reaches out to an even broader listening audience. This in turn means big advertising dollars.

I often use this analogy to explain it; those who aren't conservatives often listen because it like watching a train wreck, you just can't turn away. The show hosts so incense you, but you just can't stop listening to their pontifications because you can't believe what they are saying.
It's also like watching the Yankees or Notre Dame, you hate them, but you keep watching, hoping to see them get beat.
