That lava rock looking thing across from the old CompUSA on Ala Moana. It looks scary and cool.

You mean the historic Kaka'ako Ala Moana Pump Station?

I remember reading somewhere that it's one of the nation's only sewage plants on the national registry of historic places. The buildings very recently got some substantial renovation work done. If I recall correctly, Louis Vuitton was one of the sponsors of a fundraiser held there for some of the improvements.

It has its own Wikipedia entry. Cool.

For the longest time, that building sat in disrepair. Good to see it polished up. Hopefully, the pump station as well as the old Kaka'ako Fire Station will continue to be well-maintained and not allowed to become eye-sores again.

I've written about that building quite a bit for the Star-Bulletin. It's a Traphagen design, and at one time was supposed to be the home of Historic Hawaii, but OHA objected as it is on ceded land.

This is so interesting. Thanks for this thread.

In '63 - '64, I worked at Coca-Cola Bottling across Keawe Street & had to walk by that structure. Never really took a second look at it. Never would have thought it was historic. Don't even notice it now.
