  • HT Brainpower Needed: Ratings

    Hello, friends.

I need to design a rating system, from one to five, using local
    icons.

    Example:

    Streets:
    Volcano Highway (easy)
    Kapiolani Boulevard (medium)
    Wilhelmina Rise (difficult)
    Hana Highway (crazy)

    Surf Breaks:
    Swimming pool
    Ala Moana
    Sandy Beach
    Pipeline
    Waimea Bay

I know that first one only has four, but I can use a 4-step scale or a 5-step scale. I thought of that first one, and Zztype came up with the second. Don't worry so much about easy-to-hard; some cool ideas Zz came up with were foods, in ascending order of sourness, mountains from lowest to highest, and Hawaiian fish from smallest to largest.

I can use just about as many as I can get, so if you can think of any, I will be enormously grateful!
But I'm disturbed! I'm depressed! I'm inadequate! I GOT IT ALL! (George Costanza)

Bugs...from harmless to poisonous or cute to downright ugly!?
    Aloha shirts...color determines rating?
    Flowers...a plethora of choices!
    Shells...again, lots of choices
    Don Ho album covers
Headshots of tv stars who had shows set in Hawaii
I think I'd better submit this before I get myself into trouble!

      • aweoweo medium (small/easy to gut, but gotta scale em)
      • ahi difficult (gotta filet a certain way, there's the black part that needs to be cut around the fins, its a whole process)

Awesome, Pua`i...that's what I have in mind. Thanks for the help. Tutusue, I need the blanks filled in for me! What would the steps be in those categories? It's cool if you can't think of any, but if you can, that would be tremendous.

Aha! I misunderstood what you were looking for. That's what I get for staying up too late last night! I'll put my thinking cap on the right way and see what I can come up with.

since my mind is in this headspace:

            SHOPPING:
            • Swap meet: easy (easy on the wallet, can work your mad haggle skillz)
            • Ross: not too bad (easy on the wallet, cannot haggle)
            • Macy's: certain salespeople can be difficult (sometimes easy on the wallet if you hit the zooper sale, but no guarrans that they have it still in your size)
            • Top level Ala Moana: pleeze! (unless you are a Japanese tourist, they look right through you, and if you need a "2X", it had better be in front of an "S", not an "L" or they no mo your size!)

I'm trying to remember what the swimming classifications were when I was a wee lad at the YMCA. I know it started with Opihi, since we basically clung to the wall. I think the top level was mano, or shark.

                      Re: HT Brainpower Needed: Ratings

okay okay okay...I think I need to clarify just a little, little, little bit.

I have to rate stuff. Say, the difficulty of a task. I explain the task, and then I let the task-attemptors know how this task rates on a difficulty scale. Using the example I've given, it might look like this:

Task: Do this, this, this, and this.
                      Difficulty rating:
                      Swimming pool
                      -->Ala Moana
                      Sandy Beach
                      Pipeline
                      Waimea Bay

I don't have a lot of room for long explanation or really esoteric stuff. It's okay if it's something of a head-scratcher, but the real attention will be paid to the task itself. Am I making sense? I mean, I love (just love!) the suggestions so far--especially the shopping and swimming ones--so please feel free to post your craziest ideas, but it sounds like I'm not being clear about what I'm looking for.

Thanks everyone who's contributed so far. I can't wait to hear what else you've got!
