  • The Passion

It took me a few weeks to get up the courage to see Mel Gibson's film. I think it is a cinema masterpiece, just magnificent. But it's also an extremely brutal thing to watch and I had to close my eyes during parts of it.

When it comes to Oscar time, I think Gibson definitely deserves the Best Director award. The actress who played (a most unusual) Mary gets Best Supporting Actress and the P. Pilate gets Best Supporting Actor.

WOW!. No one ever replied to this post, shucks.
    I will.
    I'm with you Albert...
It also took me a while to see this movie,
I also covered up my eyes on the brutal parts.
Yes, definately, Mel Gibson, came out ahead
on this one. I'm sure once everyone had a
    chance to see his movie,
everyone would want to get into the act.

      Re: The Passion

I saw this film about a month ago at the Restaurant Row theater for a dollar. Good movie..... I give it an 8 on my scale of 0 to 10. I agree, several scenes were very brutal; fact is I never considered the torture prior to the time before He had to carry his own cross up the hill. Brutal but moving though. I liked the flashbacks and the film does end on a positive note.

"The Passion" will be an Oscar contender and if so, will be one of the very few films to be released early in the Oscar window (February) when most serious contenders are released in the fall and winter seasons.

Lastly "The Passion" is one of the hottest selling DVD's in pre-order (tied with the "Star Wars" triology boxed set at times).... The film is slated for release on August 31st.
      I'm still here. Are you?

        Re: The Passion

Sigh, y'all got me, here! I very much base my life on my faith in Jesus as hopefully, as undeserving as I am, my savior, and I didn't see the movie, yet! I am thrilled it was such a hit, and I will buy the DVD, I think it comes out in Aug, but I wanted to go see it alone, for I am sure people don't exaggerate that say you, as a believer, don't watch it, you experience....it.

I am so glad to hear so many excellent reviews here, too. I don't know how Hollyweird will deal with this movie. I can see them trying to ignore it, as it is about a true story, and the most important one ever told, but since Jesus didn't come to support or make alright, all of the disgusting, self-indulgent things of the flesh, to put it mildly, I expect the movie industry to do their best to not give the move its due, denying Jesus and His power, yet again. Surely some of them felt shamed by the movie, especially since it told the whole story and showed Him miraculously rising from the dead.

I look forward to hearing if it is nominated, as you guys make clear it should be, and then win some awards. Gives a whole new meaning to "Jesus Christ, Superstar."

Unless you don't mind sitting next to someone while tears are running down your face, then yes, it's best to see it alone.

            Hi Albert,

I am pretty private about crying, just as I am about praying. I don't like churches because to me, prayer is the most personal thing a person can do, and sex is the second-most personal thing. Not trying to be cute or rude, just the truth. I do think that if most people were crying at that movie, it would bother me less to have, but seeing it alone at home, I think, will be a profound experience. I feel since Jesus really did suffer such, I can at least watch, as I could've been there and not left that cross until His work was finished.

              Re: The Passion

My friends had cautioned me ahead of time about the brutally graphic scenes and even suggested I make sure I took hubby along so I expected the worst. Surprisingly, it wasn't so much the torture that made me cry as it was the emotions that Mary must've been going through while watching her son suffer.

I felt the same when I watched the beach scene in Saving Private Ryan. When the young soldiers were near death on the beach, crying out in pain for their mothers. I made the mistake of watching it right after my son enlisted in the Army and was away in boot camp.

              It's a "mommy" thing, I'm sure.

I don't think I could handle watching this film. It's brutal enough. Why glorify the death of Jesus Christ when you can glorify the way he lived? It's not as gruesome.

I felt like such a coward for closing my eyes during "Ryan" that I went to see it a second time, determined to keep my eyes open all the way through.

uuuhhh... Mel's movie "told the whole story" ???!!!

Just bought the DVD so it can be viewed on the 12 foot home theatre screening room here, in all its bloody glory.
                    ahem...

My favorite parts: satan, played by a woman. cool.
("...pleased to meet you. hope you guess my name.")
                    And her voice.
and her offspring; The mutant adult/baby demon.
                    ultracool.
intently gazes at the various proceedings. while gliding fluidly as if just ascended from the other world.... and unafflicted with the limitations mere mortals have with gravity, actual walking, and all that rot.

Peter weeping and bleeding in a corner in town. Kids come up and taunt him. Now and again, glimpses show their faces quickly , seemingly contorted to gross deformed mini devils taunting his body and soul.
Then he is seen outside of town. in the desert. Small children still taunting him, then they suddenly dissappear. He slowly turns, catching the horrific scent and visual of a rotting eyeless, teethbaring grimacing donkey corpse, now the home of a thousand flies and their maggott offspring.
He senses the heights and depths of despair all at once, for he is irredeemable, having denied jesus thrice.
Straightaway, he secures a noosed knotted rope above himself on a nearby tree. Hangs himself and promptly sends his pathetic rotting soul to the netherworlds.

Reports widespread of much weeping by viewers during the movie in film houses.
This is based on and a result of the reaction someone has to viewing this part of the life of a personage, an icon they have been brought up with who they perceive to be very familiar with and close to, viewed as their sole spiritual saviour, someone who sacrificed so much, in their eyes, as per the biblical stories recounted for decades to many americans through their life....
                    Be clear about this.
                    Why are you weeping?
You are shedding tears, for you perceive what is on the screen actually happened to a 'person' you think you have known most of your waking life.
                    Think about that....

                    This film may be...
                    Best makeup effects contender.
                    BUT:
This was not the passion of christ.. It was the brutal torturing of christ. No passion involved through this few days of his life.
There would be so much more to shoot re; his life, wherein
"passion" can be found. If they simply took more of his story. and i believe there are a few books around that may offer some guidelines.

As Patton Oswalt the hilarious but clever comedian points out, THATS why Mel had no big studio support on this.
It's as if someone goes to Warner and sez:
I wanna make a movie based on the life of Einstein
                    Execs at the pitch ready to green light it;
"Yea ok, cool idea. he was an intriguing guy. Why not! Interesting life and all that."

"No, but I just wanna cover those four hours he had a really horrific stomach ache. Ate a bad egg salad sandwich and sat on the throne for four hours. THAT is what I wanna do.
He really had some amazing revelations at that time. It's a pivotal point in his life. Tremendous pain. Cathartic. Real insights, doubts and fears. Questioned his innermost beliefs. Word is, that's when he came up with relativity or something close."

Point is, it's just about as restrictive and as appealing as what Mel did.
Just a couple days in the life of the leader of the various and sundry christian sects, cults, splits'n'factions and religions around the globe. The part that would elicit sooo much emotion. Naturally resulting in amazing box office and incredible publicity that we all were witness to, a result of tremendous buzz, and no expenditure of advertising dollars.
Well done Mel. Verrry smart move. Frikken clevah.

                    additionally...
The flashbacks were inconsequential; merely a tool to take your eyes and attention from a severe moment. Just a gimmick. After all; why bother showing him as a kid running and falling and mommy coming to him and saying " i am here, no worry, brah."
when he himself is carrying the cross and he falters.
Or, when Pontius Pilate washes his hands to seal his fate.
("...but what's puzzling you, is the nature of my game")
jesus flashes back to a month or so ago when he washed the feet of some dude that walked into his hut with dirty feet. Or sum-pin lidat.
                    Not connected. Just a gimmick.

This gimmick is remniscient of that moment when Regan has gone berserk in "the exorcist" and we are fairly horrified by what we just were witness to. The camera slowly pans away from the devil possessed girl and holds for a moment on a few innocent drawings made by her, tacked to the wall...
                    so...
Good film making. But what is it really saying? What are we feeling and learning from it? Did you allow yourself to be manipulated?

I feel that although the movie "The Passion" took artistic license with some scenes, the movie did portray something close to what really happened. There are many movies about Jesus and His life. This one was specifically about His death and resurrection. Jesus did live His life with passion, but when we refer to "The Passion of the Christ", it speaks of Him giving His life for each one of us. I cried at the movie so that means that I was manipulated? If we laugh at a funny scene in a movie or jump with fear from something scary, isn't that the same? It was just a movie. To me, a portrayal of a true historical event that has affected the entire world. Jesus' life, death and resurrection has change my life personally along with millions of others, but remember this was just a movie. The real thing is sooo much more.

I decided to watch it again. With friends and was floored. What was portrayed in the movie really happened and what an effect on mankind afterwards! All societies of humankind have believed in a higher power and this belief (in Jesus) especially. Our year dates coincide with His birthday and every year we honor His death and resurrection. Pretty amazing if He was just "a man" What ever your belief, that's cool. Isn't it interesting how most all societies in history have believed in a "Higher Power" or powers?
