      Re: Quick intro

It's good to see familiar faces! Welcome, Helen and Glen! Thanks for stopping by. This is a pretty big place for little ol' us, but I'm hoping we can build it into a warm, friendly, chatty spot in time.

Who am I? Well, you two know, but to newcomers, I'm a local web geek that cut my teeth on dial-up BBSes, paddled around in USENET, and now runs far too many sites, including HawaiiStories.com (weblog), HawaiiAnswers.com (FAQs), and HawaiiNews.com (news!). When I'm not surfing the web, I'm sipping imaginary tea with my daughter, wrestling with my son, holding the household together with my wife, and trying to get as much sleep as possible.

Why start HawaiiThreads.com? There's the FAQ, of course. I guess I just felt this was a "community space" that could use some exploring (although I'm apparently so out of touch I found the Aloha World Ohana Lanai site only today -- an excellent model of what I had in mind). From mailing lists to USENET to weblogs to message boards, I love 'em all.

Previously I ran different forums using different software solutions on various sites. I figured I might as well bite the bullet and bring 'em all together into one big happy site. HawaiiThreads.com will eventually be able to host special forums for other clubs, groups, and local websites who don't have their own setups.

What's next? Who knows. Here's to da kine!

Hello. I recently visited Oahu with my husband. I fell in love with the charm of the island. We plan to return and visit the other islands as soon as we can. I hope you don't mind one or two more tourists.

Hi, Gardensong! Thanks for dropping in. Congratulations on your upcoming trip! If you saw only Oahu last time, I really hope you can make it to one or more neighbor islands this year. I live in Honolulu to pay the bills, but my heart is in Hilo.

If you have any questions - where to stay, what to do, and the like - feel free to inaugurate our Hui Aloha area. I set it up specifically to help and connect with folks either coming to or living away from Hawaii.

Thanks for the welcome. It will take us a few years before we get to come back. I definitely want some info on the neat places to see on the other islands. (not just touristy stuff, but of course thats fun too ) off to check out Hui Aloha.

                Aloha Everybody!

Just a quick "Hi!" and Mahalos for creating this new spot to meet and talk story with everyone. I have always lived in New Hampshire, but studied hula
with many teachers and kumus at workshops and seminars, and love it still.
Have lots of Hawaiian and Samoan friends who've taught me how to make some ono kaukau, too! We sharing recipes in the Kaukau section here, by any chance?? *rubbing hands together*
Next year at Christmas one of my lifelong dreams comes true: I have been invited to go holoholo Hawai`i, Samoa, New Zealand!! Staying so excited!!
                Any suggestions?
                Malama pono,
                HulaWahine

                  Hello!

                  Hi everyone,

My name is Jen, I'm from Minnesota, and I am on the Yahoo group. My husband and I visited the islands in 2000 on our honeymoon. We visited Oahu, Kauai, and Maui. We loved all the WWII stuff on Oahu, hiked the Waimea canyon on Kauai, got lost and ran out of water (we had to make it a real adventure ), did the helicopter tour, snorkeled at fishbowl on Maui, (and everywhere else we could!!), struggled for breath atop Haleakala, dug our toes in the sand at Salt Pond Beach Park, drove the road to Hana (and continued the rest of the way around Maui!), and had the best meal of our entire lives at Mama's Fishhouse. We had the adventure of our lives for the two weeks we were there. It really will be remembered as one of the best things in my life.

Anyway, here is yet another person who visited and fell in love with Hawaii. I cried all the way back on the plane. For several months afterwards, I would listen to the music and cry. Hopefully someday we'll return, but I can't promise that we'd leave. Guess I better win the lottery first, eh?

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

                  Jen

Absolutely! I'm sure there are some serious foodies out there. Unfortunately, I won't contribute much. I think the spam musubi is the end of my culinary skill! If there's anything you're looking to make, or a new recipe you'd like to share, tell us about it!

Now that's what I call a trip. I was lucky enough to visit New Zealand, and fell in love with the place. (Not easy for an island boy!) The cultural commonalities are impressive. I think the New Zealand model of maori/West relations is something to admire. Do tell us about your Hawaii trip as it draws near.

That's the spirit! Yeah, it's not exactly cheap to visit or live here. But I'm glad you got to see more than Honolulu on your honeymoon! As for helicopter tours? I'm too chicken.

                      Hi everyone,

I'm a HawaiiStories member, albeit, a somewhat quiet one. You may know me from my weblog, Champuru.com.

I always enjoy reading the interesting stories and observations of my fellow islanders and islanders-at-heart on HawaiiStories and I'm looking forward to even more interesting content here on its sister site.

Maybe I'll even try to contribute something worth reading, too.

Glad to be part of the ohana!
                      Donna

Howzit everybody. Quark here. Some know me as Spin Quark the subatomic particle with an infrequently updated blog on HawaiiStories. Others know me as quark_hi a lurker on Yahoo IM and a wannabe Ferengi from DS9. When I am not trying to keep up with pzarquon, I am writing Bytemarks for the Honolulu Advertiser or playing DJ on a radio show I call Rough Take.

Happy to be a part of this lively group.

I'm one of the old farts here who has a long history of beng on message board sites going back to the days of the old BBS's with our 1200 and 2400 baud modems. I occasionally post at HawaiiStories.com, soc.culture.hawaii and have a conservative approach to many political issues. I also love technology, especially Macs and run or maintain websites including the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide, Small Business Hawaii and HonokaaHawaii.com. Go here to visit my personal website. From there follow the links to the sites just mentioned and several more.
