  • Akaka vs. Case Debate: Live Thread

This is a live thread set up specifically for real-time discussion of the televised debate between Rep. Ed Case and Sen. Daniel Akaka, which is being broadcast live on PBS Hawaii beginning at 7:30 p.m. Afterward, this thread will remain open for further commentary and analysis specific to the debate for a few days, provided comments remain on-topic and civil.

Feel free to post your observations and reactions as the debate unfolds. In addition to the substance of what the candidates say, their manner and performance as they speak is also quite relevant. Pull out powerful or problematic quotes, critique questions, responses, and rebuttals, and add context to issues that may be raised but not fully or fairly addressed during the debate.

This is not a thread to harp on your support for a specific candidate, though certainly many of us have strong feelings about one or the other. Even if you're firmly in a camp, you too can have a sense for when things are going well for "your guy," and when things could be could be going better. While you may very well find nothing but fault in the responses or performance of one candidate, and nothing but brilliance and perfection in the other, put some effort into thinking critically and analyzing the big picture.

(Even if no in-progress commentary surfaces, this thread will remain for discussion of the debate specifically. General Akaka v. Case discussion will of course continue in the previous thread.)

    Enjoy the show, everyone!

This thread will open shortly before the debate begins.

On Case's opening remarks: Interestingly, I bet he's better at exteporaneous speaking than reading prepared statements. The parts where he was trying to be light and fun came off as wooden, and he made several goofs. He actually struck me as nervous as awkward, which was pretty unexpected.

dang... this not looking good for me as a viewer...

I still don't care about the vote just yet...

this will determine my vote...(and for that matter my wifes vote)
