  • What's your favorite Hawaiian mele?

    Aloha kakou,

I just thought I'd start a topic asking you guys what your favorite Hawaiian song is. It can be a traditional song that lots of artists have recorded or an original composition by a single artist or group. I couldn't choose one, but some of them are as follows:

Robi Kahakalau - Keiki O Ka 'Aina La
Charles Ka'upu and Hapa's version of Waika (I like the 'oli section provided by Charles.)
    Raiatea Helm - He'e'ia
Keali'i Reichel - E O Mai and Ka Nohona Pili Kai would be among my top favorites by him.
    Ale'a - Ka Lehua Punono

I'll let you all know if any more mele come to mind.

"Tiny Bubbles" by Don Ho. That IS a Hawaiian song, right? Nah, j/k.

One of the most "chicken skin" performances I ever seen was Cyril Pahinui perform "Hiʻilawe" at the Kihoʻalu festival many years ago. You coud literally feel the spirit he had as he sang and played from deep in his soul to his father above. Iʻll admit that one brought me a tear.

        So many...

But two that come to mind are "Malie's Song/Hawaiian Lullaby," by Keali'i Reichel and "Pua Lililehua," sung by Sean Na'auao.

Just pretty and lovely to listen to.

            One more...

"Ipo Lei Manu," as sung by Dennis Kamakahi. Such a heartwrenching song, when you know the circumstances under which it was written.

A similar thread appeared here: http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=6446

At that time my top 3 Hawaiian songs were:

                          1. Kanaka Wai Wai - Hui O'Hana
                          2. Pua Lililehua - The Kahauanu Lake Trio
                          3. Kawika - The Sunday Manoa

                          They still are.
