  • Sea Asparagus?

    I was reading this article online this morning and was wondering if anyone out there actually tried this food?
    Technically, it's a seaweed, which for many people, means it's off the menu. But this sea vegetable has much more in common with such popular land vegetables as cucumbers, green beans and asparagus than it does with ogo or other limu. The taste (salty but not fishy) and texture (it snaps like a new-crop apple) both are inviting.
    Sounds good, but interesting.

    So I wonder if that is the same kind that grows in the ocean on my side? I mean can you get it and eat it or is it tainted? Does it have to be grown? Is it a special strain? Will the kind in Oregon poison me to death?

    I am very fascinated and wish they had more information...may have to break out the google on this one!

      I've had it served as a garnish on some dishes. I liked the texture: slightly briny and crunchy, just as the story describes. It's not "slimy" like wakame (Japanese seaweed salad). The stuff I had probably came from somewhere in Canada, where they farm it commercially.

        Wow, I just ate it for the first time last month. I was eating at a steakhouse at an Indian Casino, and the side vegetable was something I'd never seen before. When I asked the waiter what it was, he said Sea Asparagus.

        Yes, very briny, salty, certainly not for everyone. But I enjoyed it and thought it was a nice pairing, as I don't like to pour salt on my steak. I prefer to enjoy the flavor of the steak rather than drown it in A-1 or other stuff.

          It is very tasty. The chef from Mariposa used it in one of the dishes he prepared for the annual Showcase event at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. I haven't had anywhere else yet but I'm hoping it becomes widely available. By the way, tomorrow is the third anniversary of the Saturday KCC Farmers' Market. Maybe I can find some there.
