  • Are you getting porn in your email?

    Aloha to everyone,

Here's a pickle. I signed up for Hawaii threats recently, and haven't signed up for anything else, nor given out my email address. Now I'm getting 3 to 4 emails a day supposedly from different named people with gross subject lines, usually with the word "teen" in the subject.

I never open email from a source I don't know anyway, but these subjects are nastyicky and I'd just as soon not have to see them. Besides, they're grossly misspelled and boringly repetitious, not to mention the "teen" stuff.

So how did my email address get out? Honestly, this is the only place I knowingly dropped it.

    Any ideas? Help?

    Mahalo, labuzz

Oops, that's Hawaii Threads, with a d, not threats. Hey, maybe that's why?? Probly not.

Well how old is your e-mail account? Sometimes spam mail doesn't start circulating until after a little while. And chances are, if you're with a large e-mail service like hotmail or yahoo, it's kind of a given with those free services, that they'll give out your address.

Also, never click on any link that offers to take you off their mailing list. That only confirms to them that your account is active. They'll take you off the list, but also add you to 10 other lists

You're right, it's a personal problem. It's gross because the subject lines describe a female getting hurt sexually, and frequently one who is a child. I'm personally troubled by reading that several times a day in my email. I guess that makes it a personal problem.

Are you the only user of your computer?

Re: Are you getting porn in your email?

I'm the only user, I've had the same email account for years, it's not a major freebie account, and I haven't opted out of anything. The only thing I've done differently is sign up here. So do people get access to our email address here? I'm not all that computer literate so don't know what's possible/not possible. It gets by my spam detector, which is a pretty good one.

Also, can't figure out how to quote, or I'd answer you directly.

Appreciate your trying to help me figure this out.

Buzzy...look in the lower right hand corner of this message box. You'll see a button that says 'quote'. Just click that to quote the email you want to reply to but please delete any text that's not pertinent to your reply!

I've received a bunch of porn spam, too, at all of my email addresses. And it has to get past some pretty rugged spam filters. Hate the stuff but it comes with the online turf, I s'pose. The delete key is your friend!

Re: Are you getting porn in your email?

According to your profile, if you click on the link that says send email to Buzzy you do get the following message:

Sorry! That user has specified that they do not wish to receive emails. If you still wish to send an email to this user, please contact the administrator and they may be able to help.
So if this was setup at the time you joined HawaiiThreads, then there is no way stuff scanning the HawaiiThreads forum can pick up your email address.

This is a long shot, but here goes:

Try Googling your e-mail address and see if it turns up someplace, perhaps on a Web site you didn't even know about.

Also try checking with Google Groups to see if it somehow got out on Usenet.

I've seen this happen before ... someone inadvertently (stupidly) posts someone else's e-mail address in a forum or Usenet news group, or it gets posted some other way, and the spambots pick it up.

                    It could be anything, really.

hey, thanks. Look at me quote!

Okay, so I feel better about HT not being the source. Everybody seems to have a lot of respect for the Admin, so he probably didn't sell it to anybody, right? So how do these misspelling freaks get access to email addresses? I mean this junk just started pouring in all of a sudden, never had it before.

Re: Are you getting porn in your email?

I joined HT in March of this year and had the email address I used to register here for at least 6 years and have never gotten porn spam at that email address. However, this does not mean that I don't expect to get spam at that email address ever and if I do get spam, some of it will probably be porn given how much porn spam (and offers for "medication" and offers to sell me stock, etc.) is floating out there.

Re: Are you getting porn in your email?

I know that my e-mail address is readily available to whoever looks at my profile and goes to the link that provides my e-mail address. (I have not blocked this info from being made public). I don't know whether one has to be registered to access this information...I suppose if someone wanted to harvest e-mail addresses from HT, they could merely sign-on as a user and simply lurk the profiles. Maybe this could be one reason for so many "members" at HT, yet relatively few serious posters.

As for my e-mail being public here in HT, I don't care who sends what to it...I delete nearly 100% of any incoming e-mails to it, without even bothering to open them. Why bother? I know for fact that there are no lonely housewives or hot teens on Spring Break who want to meet me, and I really don't have any need for counterfeit drugs imported from India or China.
