  • :) Teacher maybe on the move

Hi I am a teacher from Ohio..currently in Nevada, and I am interviewing with a recruiter next Sunday for a position in Hawaii. Over the past few years, I have looked at Hawaii schools but this is the first time I saw openings for English teachers. I moved to Las Vegas from Ohio almost 2 years ago, and so I am hoping that I have the chance for another final move to Hawaii. I decided to post here after reading for a couple hours.

I will be moving with my little man who is 5 (assuming I receive an offer). He loves the ocean and keeps asking me "when can we move to the beach mama"? LOL kids are so amazingly open and excited about life.

I've been doing some research about the education system and life in Oahu...especially in the Leeward side because of the high needs schools. All my experinces have been at at risk schools with kids who need more support and oppurtunities to learn. My recruiter mentioned Pearl City and Ewa for living becuase I would need to be within 30 minutes or so from the hospital. My son has Cystic Fibrosis and there is a specialist at the hospital. He needs maintence check ups every few months.

So any thoughts on areas to live in on that side of the island? His auntie might come with us (she is 18) and wants to attend college for nursing or forensic sciences. I know cost of living is much higher, and so since material things are not a major thing for me I am ok with it (I think..lol). I am actually truly thrilled at the possibility, but this move is defintely a life-changing decision!
Please feel free with comments and ideas...

thank you...it's so crazy because I don't know wat a lot of the lingo is..is that awful? I hope if I do move, I eventually pick it up! I figure my little man will since he is so young...one of my student here just recently moved from Maui and said she thinks that I will love the schools and that they way I am with my students is wat makes them love me so much..I hope it will be the same there! She also told me she thinks my little one will love it and fit in at school since he is so young and can easily adapt to changes

      How is it in Canada?

Im sure your kiddo will fit right in. Locals are nice and welcome people who move there. Just respect the aina (earth aka the islands) and you'll be fine

Canada? Canada is bein cold, mean and windy.. I miss hawaii so bad.. wasnt a good idea to move up here to work.. Im comin home soon lol

Normally I would 2nd the Makaha reply as I live there and absolutely love it. However, this time I won't 2nd it. May I assume the doc your son needs to see is in downtown Honolulu? If so, that's an hour drive, at best, from Makaha. Should you need one, the nearest hospital (St. Francis West) is 25-30 minutes down the road. The Waianae Coast is serviced by the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Care center with an emergency room but it's for urgent care, not a hospital.

Traffic has become a 24/7/365 problem. Ooooh how I long for the good ol' days!! Anyway, it might be best for you to live as close to downtown as your finances allow.

Best of luck to you. Our state can always use more wonderful teachers.

Thanks for the sugestions. I drive 45 minutes in Vegas traffic every 4 mos to get him to his doc. Traffic is hella bad here..

But, if I do get a position, I will do even more research on winds and pollens and other factors that effect my son. I also need to contact the doc there.

I am just sooo happy I got an interview after about 5 years of looking at Hawaii schools. So now I just gotta keep my fingers crossed

btw.. when u come here and drive to work.. leave early.. even if theres five lanes on some highways.. you might get stuck just cuz people like driving side by side the same speed and maybe talk from the window lol.. Ive done it.. and Ive seen it done.. its fun but yeah.. some people get pissed... just so you know

I might be mistaken but I believe that the only hospital on Oahu (and probably the whole state of Hawaii) that has really good pediatric specialists would most certainly be Kapiolani Women and Children's Hospital on Punahou Street (not Pali Momi).

                http://www.kapiolani.org/b.asp?aID=10&pID=10

It would truly scare me if I had a child with a serious medical condition and had to depend on either St Francis West or Waianae Comp to provide care in case of an emergency.

Thank you for the link I am calling this week to see about the doc for cystic fibrosis. I need to get some idea about what a move to Hawaii might mean for my son. He is in great condition now and most would never suspect, but I'd like to keep it that way.

Aloha and good luck with your pending interview.

If you haven't already viewed this link... http://doe.k12.hi.us/personnel/teachinginhawaii.htm

It's a good link for new prospective teachers.

As far as medical care... I would take windwardoahurn's advice regarding that...as she is a nurse...

As far as bringing your child's 18 year old "auntie" along with you... It will probably help with child care costs... However, if she is planning on attending school... she might not be able to actually do child care... so therefore she may just end up being an added expense.... I'm sure a lot of 18 year olds would love to come to Hawaii as an "auntie"... however, depending on how serious they truly are... it might either make things easier or more difficult.

                    Any rate...good luck.

I have the site book marked..lol. His auntie has lived with me for a few years now, so I know all bout the expense She is going to college if she lives with me ..NO WAY OUT! He will be in 1st grade next year and she has always helped out. Although his dad doesn't choose to be in his life, his sis (the auntie) does and I am thankful as I have little family to offer him. I grew up with almost no fam and want him to have what he can and who loves him.

I will take any advice on the hospital and health care Thanks to all
