  • Hawaiian Names for Wahine and Kane Both

I can think of a couple inoa Hawai'i for both kane and wahine. I will post my list, and if there are any that you think of that I don't post, then please post them yourself. This will be interesting.

    Kalani
    Kealoha
    Mokihana
    Lehua
    Kai
Nohea? (Is that right or is that only for wahine?)

That's all I can think of right now.

Hawaiian names are NEVER gender specific...any name can be given to a male or female (just be sure to get permission if circumstances warrant it)....people make this same mistake same way an 's' is added to indicate plural. The Hawaiian language uses 'na' to indicate plural.

              Aloha no,

Ninau: Does na apply to words that are proceeded with both ka and ke? For some reason I don't think I've ever heard people use "na aloha," instead I've heard "na ke aloha." Why?

                  I'd be mad too!

Yeah, I find that one gender specific for obvious reasons.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

My ohana has a family name, as far as I can tell its been in our ohana for about 5 generations, the name is 'Kawehionapua' and there's 4 uncles & 15 aunty's, 11 male cousins & 17 female cousins, 3 neices, 1 nephew with the name and hopefully when I have a daughter I'd like to pass on the name. For short ofcourse we say 'Kawehi'. The Kane are proud of their name....family,culture thing.

I don't think there's a single soul who dare teases my Uncle Pua (short for Pua'ala; frangant flower). But when we say it, we enunciate fast and harsh, almost as if say "Un-ko-Bwah"

LOL, yea that sounds like us ~ we do the same kinda, we just shortened the name...from Kawehionapua = Kawehi = Wehi = to just = We. (pronounced "VE")

My name: Pomaika'i (usually shortened into the nickname "Pomai"). I'm a kane.

This name was rare during my years in school; myself only having met two other girls with it, but it seems to be gaining popularity lately. Today's local music scene has a few folks named "Pomai", including a wahine DJ (HOT 93.9FM), a wahine vocalist (Pomai & Loeka) and a kane guitarist (Inoa'ole).

def: pōmaika'i - Good fortune, blessings, prosperous, fortunate
