  • Hives

I have had the hives for 2 weeks. It is driving me crazy!

I have modified my diet over the last 2 weeks every few days. I am to the point of eating only bread and rice for the last 2 days.

Changed to different Bath & laundry soap a few times.

    I only drink bottled water.

My doctor tells me hives is tricky. He gave me a few things to take but they make me sleepy!

For some reason I break out the most in the morning and late at night.

It is so bad I get welts on the palm of my hands, some welts on my skin are 3" in diameter. sometimes I get welts on top of welts!

anyone with a similar story? and result?

I went to the Kaiser Moanalua emergency room more than once for this. I know what a frustrating experience it can be. I can tell you that although the medication they gave me treated my symptoms, they were unable to diagnose the cause of my outbreaks. I eventually saw a specialist at the Honolulu clinic, and the doctor actually made fun of me! Thankfully, each bout only lasted 3-4 days.

While I have noticed that eating salmon occasionally gives me a very mild outbreak, I am quite sure it is not what caused my major outbreaks.

I broke out in hives in High School before a big tournament one year.

The doctors said it was probably from stress.

Are you stressed when you have these outbreaks?

Sometimes hives are a symptom of something more than just an allergy.

Have you had a complete physical workup, including bloodwork?

If it's only in the morning and night does it have something to do with your bed?? Or does soemthing specifically in that time frame happen??
A sheet may not keep the allergin from getting you. My sons rash was only triggered at certian times and we found out we had mold behind the toilet in the wall. He stopped getting them immediately.
Since when is psycho a bad thing??

              Re: Hives

I get hives at very random intervals. Sometimes they're several years apart. Last major outbreak landed me in ER. No idea what caused it - I went to bed the night before, feeling rather normal but when I woke up and looked in the mirror I saw a parrotfish staring back at me. My lips were swollen to the max, my eyes were puffy and I had hives all over my back. Had to drive to my friend's house so she could then drive me to ER where I ended up getting 3 IVs full of steroids...it was the only thing that worked.

I'm allergic to chicken stock (marrow) but I didn't have any the day before. Don't think it was stress since I had the day off that day. Doc told me that sometimes your body can suddenly treat something that is normally a non-allergen to MAJOR-allergen. Just a quirky thing that happens for one day. Just need to know what to in case such flare-ups happen. Ugh.

sounds like something that happened to me three times, for several weeks, three different and non-consecutive years (different seasons, too). i would break out into hives for no known reason, sometimes on my face, sometimes on my hands, sometimes on my butt...and i'd have hives three days straight, then no hives for two days, then hives for more than a week...you get the idea. then suddenly, without any warning, i became hives free.

the last time, i went to see dr. norman goldstein. even tho i had an appt in the relatively early morning (nine ayem, i think), he didn't see me til almost ten. however, it was worth it. he gave me a shot in the upper butt (kenalog, i think) and a month's worth of zyrtec. mind you, benadryl puts me to sleep unless i take the children's dosage, and even then, i get loopy. i had no problems with zyrtec.

the only commonality i can find with the different times this has happened to me is stress. the first two times, i was working for an employer who made me miserable. the third time, i had gotten into a baaaaad disagreement with my mom, which dovetailed with a baaaaaad disagreement with the then-not-quite-beau. the funny thing is, goldstein doesn't believe in stress as a cause for hives. i'll say this tho--his solution worked!
superbia (pride), avaritia (greed), luxuria (lust), invidia (envy), gula (gluttony), ira (wrath) & acedia (sloth)--the seven deadly sins.

"when you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people i deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly..."--meditations, marcus aurelius (make sure you read the rest of the passage, ya lazy wankers!)
