  • Lyrics Question on "The Twelve Days of Christmas Hawaiian Style"

    Aloha kakou,

I recently purchased Na Leo's CD and I can't understand what they sing for 10. All the sites that have the lyrics online say "10 cans of beer" but that's not what they sing. Can anyone kokua? Mahalo!

I found it in the liner notes myself. It's 10 rainbow shave ice.

Can someone please tell me what an aku is and what a mu'umu'u is? Thanks.

I think "aku" is probably referring to a kind of tuna; a mu`umu`u is a loose-fitting dress, commonly mis-pronounced as if you are quoting a cow...twice.

They probably modified the lyrics because of the beer reference.

            More specifically, it's skipjack tuna.

In their version, 11 and 12 are also changed.

So, wait, what are the "official" Hawaiian "Twelve Days of Christmas" items? The one with eleven missionary and twelve television? I guess those were changed 'cause they aren't particularly Hawaiian?

Or maybe they are particularly Hawaiian and that's just not the image the singers wanted to perpetuate.

Well, missionary as a Hawaiian link I can see, but beer and TV? That's pop culture... that's everyone. I don't think they're trying to be PC in making unflattering links to Hawaiians, I think they'd rather not waste a few perfectly good numbers on something so generic. Might as well be rings and hens and stuff. Or "Black Friday" deals, for that matter.

Then again, that's what that "Twelve Pains of Christmas" song is for. "Now why the hell are they blinking?"

Those are the lyrics our kumu prefers, when having keiki dance to this song; no beer for them, I guess.
