  • Mesa Goes to China

A few months ago, the CEO of Mesa told reporters that he would be interested in flying some routes within Mainland China. Tomorrow, he is scheduled to sign an agreement with Shenzhen Airlines to create a regional airline (probably through a code share agreement).

The new airline, whose name is still being finalized, will operate 50-seat regional jets within mainland China to Shenzhen, Beijing, Chongqing, Xiamen, Nanjing, Kunming, Dalian, Shenyang, Xian, Zhengzhou and Nanning.

Service is expected to begin within 12 months, with 20 jets to be in operation before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The fleet is expected to grow to more than 100 planes within five years and be comprised of 50-, 70- and 90-seat aircraft. The type of aircraft that will be used is still being determined.
Ever the opportunist, Mesa is planning to score bigtime by ferrying visitors to and from the next summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

But you have to wonder if/how this will impact go! amd its ability to service Hawai'i. Even leasing planes ain't cheap, and he's talking about a fleet that's bigger than what he's got flying interisland.

Don't they have a few spare planes on the mainland? Isn't that what they've used to start go! in Hawaii, repaint a few extra CRJ-200s? Besides, since the venture in China has a partner with a larger share at 51%, maybe the partner will also be contributing planes too.
