  • Drug-sniffing dog pilot program in Maui school

With the sale and use of drugs and violence being as prevalent as it is in Hawai'i schools, Kalama Intermediate School in Makawao is embarking on a pilot project to use a drug-sniffing dog to help sniff out contraband. Programs like this are a sad part of school life nowadays if we are to protect the keiki while they are in school. St. Louis School already has had success with its own program, which began in 2004.

DOE officials said the primary purpose of the project is deterrence. Students found in possession of contraband will not be subject to school disciplinary actions, unless the contraband is a firearm. Federal and state laws require a mandatory one-year expulsion for any student in possession of a gun.

However, illegal contraband will be turned over to the Maui Police Department, which has the authority to initiate a criminal investigation.

God Forbid we spend extra money on A/C or new textbooks.
Just more examples of the overzealous, pointless, reactionary War on Drugs.

The funny part is seeing people who applaud this idea.
