Old stuff. New stuff. The neighborhood. The family. You. Artistic. Landscape. Seascape. Anything. But keep it "G". Also, they should be photos that YOU or someone you know took. No copyrighted, commercial or web-generic content.

Either embed it (the square yellow button with the mountain and sun), attach it (the paper clip button), or link to it.

Descriptive captions would be nice, but not necessary. Of course, comments and questions from members are always welcome.

Admin' can chime in if there's any other rules regarding photos that need to be addressed here.

Enjoy!

This photo was taken last week-end but not by me! This is my adorable 8 year old nephew, Spencer, who has Angelman's Syndrome. He's a special needs child in the true sense of the word. He was able to ski with an Adaptive program that works specifically with children and adults who have special needs. And, he actually learned to ski a few feet untethered...a huge accomplishment for this little guy. Spence is coming to Hawaii next month to swim with the dolphins. I can't wait!

Wow Mel, cool shot! The QM 2 is indeed something to behold. I remember when it was docked. You could see the top of it from as far as Ward Center. The Bridge is SO WIDE, it must take the deck at least 5 minutes to walk from starboard to port side. It made the Tugs alongside it look like life rafts. lol

Konaguy, those photos of Molokai are great. I need to show my aunt (who lives on Molokai) some of them so she can explain more about it.

Tutusue, hope you can get some photos of your nephew with the dolphins. That will certainly be a therapeutic and fun time for him!

AC, I love the pic of the waterfalls coming down the Koolaus.

Mel, What kind of DSLR did you use for those Kauai pics? Gorgeous. I need to pick up a DSLR myself. My point-and-shooter just doesn't have the lens pr CCD size to capture that kind of detail. I just like it because I can tote it around and not worry about it (cheap), and it still gets decent shots (Canon rules!).

Here's some more stuff...

Yeah we were lucky we had some great weather during our stay there. That being said, the gasoline was around .40 cents higher there than in Kona. But
there was a lot of lifted 4wd trucks over there. Thus the gas must burn hole through a lot of peoples wallets over there.

Mel, your photography continues to floor me. What kind of camera are you using ?

Thank you for your comments.

The cameras I use are the following:

Canon 300 D "Digital Rebel" (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos300d.asp): This is the first generation DSLR camera made by Canon that cost under $1000 (body only). I bought this when it first came out in September 2003 and use it for most of my photos. I have a couple of lenses that go with this, bag and all the other stuff one would expect with such a camera. I am thinking about upgrading to the Canon Rebel XTi (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos400d.asp).

Sony Cybershot P50: (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscp50.asp) This is my first point and shoot digital; have had this since 2000; still use it. Easier to carry around than the Canon and all of its stuff.

Sony Cybershot U30: (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscu30.asp) Bought this in 2004 on a whim. I liked the size of this thing and simplicity. Talk about point and shoot... fixed focus lens, no zooming, tiny size.

I also have some old film cameras that I use from time to time. 3 Minolta SLRs, an old Minolta TLR, some point and shoots.

Thanx Mel. I see that they go on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-EOS-300D-Rebel-Digital-Camera_W0QQitemZ200084512183QQihZ010QQcategoryZ434 54QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) pretty inexpensively.

The only thing that concerns me is megapixels. My Olympus C-60 is 6.1 megapixels, of course it's point and shoot, but these days the megapixel count is much higher on new cameras. I'm wondering how much of a difference it makes once you get past 6 megapixel resolution, cos your photos look great at 6.3. Then again, you probably have some great lenses too.

The original Digital Rebel was discontinued in early 2006, shortly after the Digital Rebel XT came out the year before. I am not surprised these older Canons are fetching some bargain prices today.

As for the megapixel count, sometimes I think it is largely overrated unless you are planning to probably have your photos published in National Geographic or some other types of high gloss prestige publication, or maybe just make poster sized prints. The maximum megapixels in my Canon is 6.0... I often don't shoot that high since most of my pictures end up being printed as 4 x 6's, used on the web or published in the occasional newsletter.

For example the photo below was taken in 2005 with my Sony P50... held the sucker on a small rock, shot several frames and hoped for the best.

Of course Photoshop can do miracles with a lot of half decent photos... low tide sunset at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Oh yeah, I hate it. But then again, it happens all the time. Today's state of the art is tomorrow's has been. If we all ran out to buy the latest and greatest, we'd all end up in the poor house.

I try to make do with what I have and save up for what hopefully may be a significant upgrade. Of course affordability comes into my picture a lot... while I would love to buy the latest top of the line Canon or even Nikon, I will probably more than likely stay in the same DSLR class that I am presently in. The body of course is not the only thing. The lens is probably more important... and the good thing with most DSLRs, there is some backward compatibility with older lenses.

Oh, but that includes all the meals, too! :D Actually, rates start at $625 (http://www.konavillage.com/kona_rates.cfm). And it's for 2 so my daughter and I will each pay half...of the KAMAAINA rate! Yes, they have 'em! The photo of the "Fijian" hale in my post above would go for that rate due to it's size and location within the property. The hale in the first photo here (http://www.konavillage.com/kona_gallery.cfm) would go for the highest rate. OMG...whatta spot! It's out on the point in the (unretouched!) photo below.

I've been wanting to buy a dSLR for awhile now. Looking on Amazon I saw a few. Any opinions on which $600+ one I should save up for?
Heres a few I was looking at.

Thanks. I'll post up some pics when I get home.

Circuit City seems to have some decent deals on Panasonic Lumix cameras. Just check out their customer ratings on cnet.com and amazon.com before you buy one.

By the way, great thread. Thanks for all the wonderful candid photographs of Hawai'i. Please keep them coming!

Kevin Jay, you're supposed to be in that photo shovelling all that snow! :p

Here's some shots I took several months ago of a "street performer" artist working in front of King's Village in Waikiki...

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/173/413839966_5965f471d0_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=413839966&size=o)
His medium are just aerosol spray paints, "found objects" such as drinking glasses, paper stencils, pointed hand tools and small paint brushes to create amazing terrestrial-meets-celestial surrealistic art. He builds each element in layers using the objects, stencils and various hand tools.

Because the workpiece is always covered in stencils with spots of overspray while he's working on it, you have no clue what the finished piece looks like until he removes them.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/182/413839968_5b6a14e8b2_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=413839968&size=o)
"Tears of Joy", the finished piece of what he was working on above. IIRC, the piece sold for $80. Not bad for about 45 minutes of labor and probably less than $5 of aerosol paint.

If you notice that white radial light glare under the water, he uses this interesting technique by placing the spray paint can upside-down with the nozzle on the canvas, then pumps quick bursts in radial fashion to create that. Very cool.

Pretty neat composition with Diamond Head Lighthouse and the cloud-covered sunset in the background. Interestingly, these guys jump off at roadside level (where the surfer's garden is), then catch the updraft along the ridge's edge to gain lift, taking them way above their starting altitude.

Here's the first McDonald's to open in Hawaii, as it appears today...

photos from last year's weekend maui getaway...which included an ultralight ride for the beau and me over hana. i'm the passenger in the first pic (note that my little foot can't quite reach down into the footrest and slightly hangs outside the fuselage) and eric is the passenger in the second pic (his legs are long enough so his feet don't dangle. and yes, that is the hana highway he's looking down at).

if you've never gone on an ultralight trip, it's awesome. it might be a lil gut--wrenching at first, bcs basically, you feel like you're riding a motorcycle sidecar with wings on top and a motor in back (there is a parachute somewhere). i tripped out when i looked down and saw a plane below us. once you climb high enough, you can glide without the motor on, and when you do that...agh...it's indescribably joyful. nothing like hearing the rush of the wind, smelling the crisp cold of the salt water, and reaching your hands out, literally, to touch a cloud.

Spotted on Sunday, just around the corner of Kalakaua and Seaside Avenue in Waikiki, is this R2D2 USPS mail collection box located at curbside...

http://www.96seven44.com/images/r2d2mailbox.jpg

Further research indicates this...

R2-D2 to collect mail for post office
By Associated Press
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Thirty years ago, in theaters near and far, far away, a movie opened the imaginations of millions, combining the magics of mythology and special effects to launch the ``Star Wars'' phenomenon.

A star of those films the brave little robot R2-D2 is about to take a turn collecting mail as the Postal Service and Lucasfilm Ltd. commemorate that movie launch.

The post office is wrapping mail collection boxes in some 200 cities nationwide in a special covering to look like R2-D2.

It's part of a promotion for a new stamp to be announced March 28, Anita T. Bizzotto, the post office's chief marketing officer, said.

``It's a little teaser for the upcoming announcement and we decided to have a little fun with it,'' she said.

About 400 mailboxes will be covered to look like the stout droid. ``When you look at a mailbox, the resemblance to R2-D2 is too good to pass up,'' Bizzotto said.

While postal officials would like people to look for these mailboxes and maybe even drop in a letter, Bizzotto urged people not to tamper with them, noting that's a crime.

That means no chance you'll see one of these on eBay anytime soon.

It would be cool if the postman pulls up in the wagon blasting the theme song while he collects the mail for the day. :D

Really nice seeing you and talking stories after all these years! It was a fun appearance and is officially my last I will ever do with JNP.

Those were really nice shots of the original Kikaida helmet from Japan. I wore it once a few years ago and the sight holes are so small with almost no perripheral vision at all.

The new costume I debuted that day came out after you left, But here is a picture I took at home. It was neat seeing him come to life in Shirokiya.

Yesterday morning (5/27/07) 5 of us met at the back of Anolani St. in Niu Valley.
We started walking at 8:15am on a hike that became an epic adventure. Hiking up the East (right) ridge. Talk about leg burning! Very lovely valley. After walking for hours and even climbing up a rope section, we reached the summit at 12:30pm. Wow, the views are incredible up there. That's where we broke for lunch and laughter. Then we crossed over the thin summit trail to the West (Left) and eventually came down the State "Hawaii Loa Trail". Reaching our cars at just past 4pm. What a wonderful day!!!

Was that the Yashica Electro 35? That was the first camera I started my career in Photography with.

mel
June 17th, 2007, 04:56 PM
Yes, sure is an Electro 35 from the late 60s or early 70s. This model is the one without the hot show and the latch release at the bottom of the camera to open the door to the film chamber. The familiar amber and red lights are on top and inside the viewfinder to indicate over or under exposure mode. Nice, fixed in place 45mm Yashica lens too. I have to take 2 more photos to get the film out and I'll see if this old guy really works. Had to order a special battery adapter from a guy in Florida.

http://www.yashica-guy.com/

I had forgotten how silent rangefinders operate when compared to SLRs. No noisy mirror pop up sound when you press the shutter release.

I have the "newer", lower end Yashica MG1 which is based on this camera. Owned it since 1978 but sometime around the late 1980s, I loaned it out, the camera was not used for a long time, and the battery leaked out and ruined the chamber. That camera is inoperable. :(

Noisy shutters was why I opted for the Olympus OM-1 Manual camera with the cloth shutter.

I preferred the Olympus OM series over the Canon A series (AT-1 for the manual and the AE-1 for the auto) because I liked the shutter priority (Aperature preferred) auto-exposure system over Canon's aperature priority (Shutter preferred) system.

With Shutter priority you control the shutter speed and the auto exposure controlled the aperature. This way you guaranteed no camera shake. Your depth of field was a gamble and left to the auto exposure controls but heck a flat picture is still better than an out of focus one.

At that time Minolta came out with their SRT 101 (manual) and the SRT 102 (auto). Neither was considered in the same class as either Olympus or Canon.

I still believe the Olympus OM-1 and the OM-2 were the best 35mm cameras out with the smoothest shutter releases. Their lenses however weren't the best and for a budding photographer at the time all I could afford was the Vivitar Series 1 lenses.

I had the opportunity to use an Olympus OM-1 for a while back in the early 1980s, and I agree it is/was a good 35mm SLR. Olympus created a series of them, OM-2, OM-4, OM-10, etc. I think today these are much sought after since the company got out of the 35mm SLR business years ago.

That said, my first "fancy" camera was the Minolta XD-5 (http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Minolta_XD-5), the cheaper cousin of the Minolta XD-11. I bought mine brand new in the early 1980s. It was the first automatic multi-mode cameras. They had aperature and shutter priority exposure as well as full metered manual. The cameras came with a slew of optional accessories and were known for the introduction of Minolta's D series of manual focus lenses. Minolta built several cameras on the D mount which was also backward compatible to older SLRs such as the Minolta SRT 101 (which was my first SLR ever, and I still have it) and its successors.

The last of the Minolta manual focus 35mm SLRs was the X-700 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/minolta/700.htm) which I also have too. The X-700 was one if not the first SLR to have "Programmed" mode built in. Put the aperature on the highest number setting, set the indicator to "P", focus and shoot. The X-700 also came with aperature priority and full metered manual mode. It did not have shutter priority for some strange reason.

Today many digital cameras are multi-mode have "P" "A" "S" and "M" modes plus a range of "amateur" modes that include "portrait" "landscape" "sports" etc. I think most if not all the digital SLRs as well as the EVF type cameras have this. Several point and shoot models are also multi-mode.

Apologies in advance for sharing some photos of the Varsity Twin Cinema's last night both here and in the related thread (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=12994), but it really was a special and bittersweet evening for my wife and I, and the best therapy I've found is to share.

Here, I'd like to highlight theater manager Crystal Kawai. She clearly loved her years at the Varsity. Many of the people who came to say goodbye to the theater also wanted to give her some aloha. She's going to be moving on to the Kahala theaters, but I suspect she'll miss the Varsity more than many of us.

The camera used is a Canon Digital Rebel 300D with 28-105 mm lens. The macro mode is not too hot on this lens. However I used an old screw-in 4x macro magnifier filter in front of the lens (58mm thread size) and manually focused really close into the flower. Shot several photos; this turned out to be the best. I forgot what the exposure was but it was shot at 200 ISO. Available sunlight.

Thanks for your comments.

Another awesome bee-on-flower macro shot blue eye!

That abandoned home in North Carolina must be haunted. I see a woman in white looking out the window on the top floor, second from the left (nearest the tree growing in front). Do you see that?

Not much I can say about your Bee shot. I think it's good. You got up close, you probably took several shots and chose the best 2.

Sometimes I do slight enhancement of photos with Photoshop before they are posted... sharpening, cropping, color saturation, whatever... depends on the photo. Most of the times photos are just as good as they are.

I also like the photo of the old house too. Try black and white. Some old stuff looks good in b & w.

LOL I don't see it I guess! I looked...and looked...
I better not show the other 2 I found!!

Mel, that is pretty much right, I took about 5 shots and 3 were blurry and 2 came out good. But I don't get the clarity you do. Seems like the flower was blurred. No matter what I did.
I might need a better camera.
But none the less I have fun stalking the bees so that's all that counts! :p

Hey Blue, if you like the old houses like that, you need to take a day trip/joyride out to Pungo, lots of them! Also the route out to the outer banks is full of "fix-r-uppers". I love the old abandoned places too, I would LOVE to know the story behind a lot of them.

Here is a link (http://www.abandoned-places.com/) to all sorts of cool abandoned places too.

HUH! I didn't know it was a popular thing to do. I have quite a collection now and will be taking several more....
we found thousands of bones at one place tonight. all chicken and small varmin bones, but cool anyways.
I plan on getting a new camera for the car and taking all I can of old abandoned homes....

Hey Pomai!
I compared it with 2 other shots I had and they only showed in 2 shots...maybe you are on to something. Hubby is creeped out and has goosebumps

As for Penny the Killer, she will be staying on the Conus, with the in laws. Sad, but the building AND quarantines rules were a bit much, and we have some solid doggy sitters. Can't pass up a once in a life time opportunity, but we will get here there later down the road.
