From the name you know the Hawaiian connection for this Hapa. His is born in CA, and played for UCLA. So he is "California Boy." No where in his bio or any news story did they ever mentioned his has Hawaii ties. Is there a Hawaii connection? I know there are lots of Hawaiians (locals) in So Cal.

And Kapono is not a popular name. Is he related to Henry Kapono?

Some extensive notes on him at NBA.com. Born and raised in California, son of Joe and Joni Kapono (and sister to Jillian)... and "says something that most people don’t know about him is that some of his heritage is Hawaiian."

Lots of athletes in his family. Any of those other names look familiar?

Yes, he's part Hawaiian with family in this state. When UCLA came here for the Maui Invitational years ago, ESPN had a short segment at halftime where they followed him and his family to the beach.

Something to consider is that Kapono is not Henry Kapono's last name. His entire name is Henry Kapono KAAIHUE.

He played football for UH in 1970 on defense.

That surname seemed to spread a bit on the west coast. I've met a few gentlemen with it who both hailed from there, and claimed no kinship with the other.
