  • Iolani team wins national economics title

I just stumbled across this article. It's good to see Hawaii youth taking an interest in economics!

For the third straight year, students from Iolani School have brought home a national championship in a National Council on Economic Education competition.

In a very close buzzer round, Iolani School, representing Hawaii and the Western Region, defeated Minnesota to win the David Ricardo Division of the Goldman Sachs National Economics Challenge.

With the score tied 8-8, Yoichi Sagawa, Cody Silva, Evan Kam, and Thanh Vu pulled away at the end to win by three points in what coach Richie Kibota called a nail-biting round.

In the Adam Smith Division, a separate Iolani team of Marisa Ideta, Jonah Yuen, Alex Chun, and Nate Yang were tied for second after the first two rounds and ended the competition fourth in the nation.

The two teams got to New York by first winning the Hawaii Council on Economic Education competition at the University of Hawaii, then moving on to win the Western regionals at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Hawaii was the only state in the nation to win the regionals at both levels -- the Adam Smith Division is advanced placement while the David Ricardo Division is non-AP.
