Those of you who pursued Higher Education, even for a little while: What kinds of campus jobs did you do?

I've had a few, and now that I'm back in school, I'm doing one now. Here's my colorful Campus Job history:
    1. Multimedia specialist. Mostly what I did was show up at UH-Manoa early in the morning (six o'clock or six-thirty), get a bunch of keys out of Kuykendall, and open up all the auditorium classrooms on campus. I'd check the projectors to make sure they worked, I'd make sure each auditorium was stocked with acetate for the projectors and microphones that worked (I used to sing a different song in each auditorium). When they were all opened, I'd return to Kuykendall and be available for any trouble-shooting of A/V equipment any professor might be having. But since there were no classes at that time, I just read the paper or did homework. Good job.
    2. Reprography assistant. Deep in the bowels of Hamilton Library was the reprography department. When profs needed slides of something that was in a book, or when they needed photo-quality prints of stuff that was in books, they put in an order with us. I'd set it up on a light table with a 35mm SLR and an excellent macro lens, and take the shots. I'd develop the slides, negatives, and prints right there. Spent a lot of time in darkrooms. Good job, but it took a toll on my vision.
    3. Writing Tutor. At UH-Hilo, I worked two different campus jobs as a writing tutor. One was with a special affirmative-action program, another was in the Writing Center. I really dug the Writing Center job: Fellow students would bring their work and we'd help them make it good. I used to get hugs and little gifts (candy, usually, but once a six-pack of beer) from grateful students who got good grades on quality work.
    4. Library assistant. I'm doing this job right now at HPU. Seven bucks an hour for seventeen hours a week. It's good, mind-engaging, no-stress work. Love it.

    So what about you?

    Re: Campus Jobs

I had 2 jobs while I was a student at the UH. The first was as a clerk in the Tradebook dept of the main campus bookstore. I used to restock the shelves and carousels and notify customers when their orders came in.

The second job was as a clerk at the University Lab School. We used to type, print the pages, and bind the materials (workbooks) used by the students. This is before the age of the personal computer - mistakes were timely to correct. But I loved this job.

Computer lab monitor for ITS at UH Manoa. 30 hrs/ week, opening or closing the labs at Keller Hall, Hamilton Library, and the CLIC lab at Sinclair Library. It was fun to get paid to be a panda that shot aliens that looked like omelets.
The fun part was working night shifts in Hamilton--night differential, no one in sight, a printer that worked 250 pages/minute...bootlegged textbooks, and didn't buy any for my last year in school.

            Re: Campus Jobs

oooo I worked in the library as a library assistant in Limited Loan (via work study) at Chico State. I met some of my bestest friends in college working in LimLoan. LimLoan was open 24 hours (for the most part), so when we went out drinking and were too drunk to drive home, we'd go there and hang out while we sobered up and played in the computer lab and visited with friends who were uh...well, doing the same thing. Often times when it was slow, I'd get loads of homework and studying done, not to mention I didn't have to buy many of my text books because many were already stored in LimLoan and I could just use them when I was at work. I recall many times that main circ workers hated us cuz we were a tad on the loud side...Best job ever!

I got paid for was being a section editor at the school paper - $130 a month iirc (or 36 cents an hour).

I also got paid for being a computer lab aide in the jour. dept - 2 hours a week for like $6 an hour.

As an undergrad I worked in the math/science tutor center at Stockton State - just outside Atlantic City and as a grad student I worked as a teaching assistant teaching undergraduate physics.

AV Tech at the East-West Center. It was great in that we could go full-time in the summers, part time during school and cut back during finals.

As for the tasks, it had it's ups and down. Ups: Redoing the audio system. Downs: Listening to a 3-day conference on fertilizer (serious!) listening for the magic words "Can I have my first slide please....". That could be a challenging task right after lunch. (zzzzzzz)

One regular task was playing back the video tapes for a bar review class. The other techs and I got quite a lesson in the legal system.

                    Re: Campus Jobs

First year at a community college in Iowa, I was a work-study student, working part time in a video distribution center and part time as a production assistant at the one-year-old public radio station there. By the next year, I was working full-time at the radio station, and my studies became the part-time activity. Started my radio career there.

Also while in college, I worked with the director of student activities, helping to book and promote concerts, took photos for the newspaper (which ended up being used in the college's promotional brochures for several years), and built the college's first darkroom for student use. The afore-mentioned director ended up becoming a member of the comedy troupe I led in the midwest for a decade.

                    Worlds away from today...

                      Re: Campus Jobs

Haha Haha, Mike_Lowery, I had the exact same job at those same labs.

I'm not gonna say who I am or when it was, except that it was when Keith (yeah! Keith!) was the manager.

That job was the best...I could go in with a local moco and eat it at the work desk while GETTING PAID, download a crapload of movies/games/music and burn it to DVD while GETTING PAID, and sneak off to the side of keller or back of hamilton or sinclair and smoke blunts with classmates/hottie chicks with laptop problems...all while GETTING PAID.

I'm about to start a job with the Dept. of Ag., but feel like finishing my degree while working in da labrat stylee again.

At UH, first it was Duplicating Services for a couple of years and then Art Dept woodshop. The second gig was the best, I was in heaven with all those tools and helping the girls complete their projects and making sure they left with all their fingers.
