  • Kalaupapa Memoir Presentation

This Sunday, July 22, author Sally-Jo Bowman will give a presentation on and reading from No Footprints in the Sand: A Memoir of Kalaupapa, the book she co-wrote with Kalaupapa patient Henry Nalaielua.

The reading begins at 10AM at the Ala Moana Barnes & Noble store. Purchases made throughout the day will help earn funds for the Hawaiian Historical Society. All you need to do is ask for a "book fair voucher" from the cashier, or pick one up during the reading. Purchases of any book or CD count, so you can pick up your copy of Harry Potter 7 and help the HHS earn some money!

This is a truly touching and inspiring memoir from an amazing man. To keep this posting brief, I won't go into the details, other than to say that Henry was diagnosed with Hansen's disease in 1936 at age 10. Since his diagnosis, he has spent most of his life at Kalaupapa. He is an artist, musician, historian and all-around fascinating person. This is one of a handful of memoirs to be shared with the public by a Kalaupapa patient. Read the summary here: http://www.bookshawaii.net/p-60-no-f...-the-sand.aspx or at Amazon.com (you can browse the book at Amazon, using their "Inside the Book" feature).
