View Full Version : HT's Photo Sharing Thread - Chapter 2

Today we had a small gathering of Flickr photographers on the North Shore. We met up at Ke Iki Beach, a hidden gem just past Waimea Bay. It was overcast, drizzling now and then, and at midday what light we got was stark and harsh.

But, of all the photos I took, one stood out immediately. Scanning the "contact sheet" in Adobe Bridge, it was as if my camera, for one moment, decided to rescue me from my amateurish fumbling and grab just the right balance of color, contrast, and focus. It truly did stand out, even from across the room.

So, I can't resist sharing my completely accidental photo of the day... my daughter Katie and her new friend Ben, sizing up the churning surf:

I took it off her "MySpace". She grown into a lovely young woman! :)

Very nice, MM. It's often a joy to see how our children turn out as adults (I say "often," because...well, you other parents of grown children know...)
What took her to Adelaide? That's a beautiful city - very old in style, if not in age. Cleland Conservation Park (nearby) was astounding.

Her mother moved to Australia with her when Jasmine was 6. Jazz bounced back and forth living with each of us for periods of time. Now she is working on a Master's degree in psychology (Probably because her Mom and I drove her crazy  ) so she's trying to figure it all out. Really though, she has turned out to be a wonderful person and I'm very proud of her in many ways.

Holy crap, that dragonfly photo is terrific. I teach a photography class to high-schoolers, and they just LOVE close-ups for some reason. I'm trying to move them in the direction of good nature photography and definitely plan to show your dragonfly to them.

We once spent twenty minutes in front of some flowers near the airport, trying to grab a good honeybee shot with our point-and-clicks. It was frustrating, but really fun.

Seriously, gorgeous bike. Extreme rake. That buggah's gotta be a beetch to steer! Extreme rake is the word. Not to mention that STEAM ROLLER of a back tire doesn't have any suspension!

Driving that is probably how some women feel wearing high heels: look pretty, at the sacrifice of PAIN!

I drove a Harley Softtail once, not long after having owned an FZR1000, and let me say, going from a sportbike's steep rake to a chopper's long-@ss rake and high center of gravity is pretty hairy-scary; especially at parking lot speed.

But yeah, the job whoever did on this bike I photographed was first class. The paint was thick like a gem. Magazine-worthy. The owner sounded like an Aussie. Nice guy.

Yep, Eric is one of her younger sons; the last time I met him he was in the insurance business, maybe still is as his day job. Don't know now, it's been years. The young lady with the 6 string uke is Eric's daughter, whose name escapes me now.

This Hawaiian Monk Seal showed up late in the evening this past Tuesday near Diamond Head beach...

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1292/1409526303_d2b6c20a93_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1409526303&size=o)

Apparently he/she had just arrived, as I had passed the area it was at within about a half hour before it was there.

It laid near the shoreline, still as the rocks it was on that I didn't even notice it until walking right past near him/her. It suddenly looked up at me and I was like, "Holy!.. it's a monk seal!". So I quickly distanced myself, and lucky to have my camera (which I usually carry), snapped this photo.

It appeared really tired, but otherwise healthy, with no visible injuries except that noticeable bleach marking on the shoulder, which I think is done by NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service to ID them. This one was quite big... about 5-6 ft. in length.

So I went home and emailed NMFS (http://www.nmfs.hawaii.edu/psd/mmrp/sighting.php) the sighting.

Then yesterday I went back and he/she was still there. This time looks like DLNR had been notified and posted the usual perimeter warning signs...

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1086/1413385281_b6382e0373_o.jpg

Notice it says to keep pets on a leash. Gosh, that'd be a nightmare if your dog was loose and charged after it. OMG! Hope nobody has to deal with that!

I've seen Hawaiian Monk Seals along Diamond Head beach on several occasions in the past. I'm guessing this one is a "regular". I just added that 1-888-256-9840 phone number on the sign into my cel in case of future sightings. If you're at the beach often, you should too. In case one might be in danger or need medical assistance, we might be able to help by having this "911" number on hand.

Update: I just got an email reply from NOAA Marine Fisheries Service...

The seal is RH58, also known as Rocky. She is an adult female that likes to haul out at Diamond Head. Chances are if there is a seal at Diamond Head, its her. She has "N11" bleached on both shoulders and her lower back to help identify her. She's in good health and its perfectly normal for monk seals to haul out and rest along the shorelines. I get many reports of people thinking that there is something wrong with the seal. Generally they are just sleeping.

Thank you again for passing on the information and photos.

cheers,
Tracy Wurth

If you missed last night's free performance, I highly recommend you book a dinner show at the Society of Seven. Their talent is just amazing. Every band member rotates on every different instrument, including drums, keyboard, horns, guitar and bass. Just awesome. We went to their show this past March and had a blast. The food is pretty good too. The showroom is located at the Outrigger Waikiki on the beach, a floor above Dukes, near Hula Grill and Chuck's Steakhouse.

I happened to be walking past yesterday when I caught them lowering a tree into the ground in Waikiki...This brings to mind the Philadelphia Eagles' new "Go Green" environmental campaign (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=3648383)...

The Eagles have quietly become the most environmentally friendly team in the National Football League, and perhaps in all of major league sports.

When the Eagles fly to an away game, their organization plants trees in the Philadelphia area to make up for the carbon dioxide emitted by the team's plane.

If this applied to all the wins for this season's football Warriors, they'd be planting an entire GROVE of coconut trees there!

Perhaps U.H. should also seriously consider this concept. There may be some federal tax incentives here. Besides, our colors are green too.

How do you guys post a photo within your message? Without it being a thumbnail...:confused:www.flickr.com is one place to start.

Photos that show up here in their full size are embedded, not attached (the paper clip).

In HT's text-editing tool set, click on the square yellow icon button (with the mountains and sun) and copy and paste the image URL from flickr into the code, then enter.

Then, per Flickr rules, you should also highlight the your photo portion and link that photo's flickr main page URL to it by clicking on the "insert link" button (globe with link icon) and copy/paste the URL in the dialog box, then hit enter.

If you're hosting photos from your own domain, you don't need to link back (like Flickr) unless you want to.

Hawaiian Monk Seals are endangered species and protected by the National Marine Fisheries Service under NOAA.

Do you have a telephoto lens that allows you to get up that close?DLNR (or Tracy) hadn't arrived yet, so there wasn't any barrier tape, so I kept about 10 feet from her (the usual barrier tape distance) and used whatever optical zoom I had (4x max). Most of those photos are cropped.

Encounters with Rocky in particular are bound to happen, as she's a regular at this beach, and DLNR can't always be there. Main thing is not to harass or bother them.

As for a "Rocky" TV show, I'd push to have it aired ahead of the EA/EIS just to "test the waters" (ratings). :p

While you may think highly of yourself, you're very new here. Think ha`aha`a, and please try to act that way, starting with an apology to Auntie Lynne.
Woodman started out with edgy humor and in a very short amount of time digressed to the point of "ignore". I love that feature altho' I rarely use it!

Regarding Water Skiing behind the SuperFerry...

Sadly, their insurance company totally nixed the idea, whether it was myself or anyone else.

Like this (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/images/downloads/desktop/MCE2.jpg), but without the remote.

Your shot looks like it was taken at Kaka'ako Park. Love the cloud shadows!

And LL, you'll see virtually that same shot of Rabbit Island when you watch your tape of Extreme Makeover from last night. The luau to celebrate end of construction was held at Sea Life Park, and Rabbit Island is prominent in many of the scenes.
I'm guessing that like me, your first thought at the mention of Rabbit Island is Gabby Pahinui. I assume you have his "Rabbit Island Music Festival" CD...

I would like to offer my apologies to 1stwahine for comments I made about her photo.

I would also like to extend those apologies to include the entire thread as it was, indeed, considered inappropriate.

Unfortunately, this had to be "shown" to me because I had no other intent than offering a flippant carcturization on a hotly debated issue.

In the future, I will make it a point to give greater consideration to the "sensitive" nature of such topics, and attempt to tread more lightly

I'm guessing that's not PZ's stuff (nor his wife's), but the fellah behind him, who was sent to the store by his girlfriend or wife, who was suffering PMS and having cravings at the same time (for Haagen-daz), so he thought, "shoots, might as well grab something for me while I'm at it", hence the Coronas. ;)

October 3rd, 2007, 08:21 AM
Actually, Gecko,
I contacted the Admin about this.

I was told that the loud and perpetual trumpeting of indignation on behalf of others is considered "aggressive policing" by members, and was acceptable to "the alternative" which was never explained.

When I responded to Admin, I explained proper forum behavior (if only to show that there is clearly a better way this could have been handled). I also included the definition of a web-troll to show that this "aggressive policing" was actually troll behavior.

Finally, I asked to post a copy of the entire message in open forum to serve as an educational tool in order to familiarize members with appropriate forum etiquette.

The request was denied.

... but should Admin have a change of heart, this offer still stands.

Steven, I have found that several of the photos that you've posted here have been previously published on other sites, attributed to other (and frequently professional) photographers. Please cease and desist posting any photos to this and any other photo sharing threads until further notice. Please PM me if you have any questions.

Just a reminder to everyone, republishing someone else's works, whether claiming them as your own or not, is a violation of copyright and will not be tolerated.

Ouch, damn.

Well, here are some more of mine just to keep the ball rolling...

From my first outing since the accident, made it up to Lanikai. Had a great hobble around, the weather could NOT have been better, considering the next day.

I ditto Mel's sentiments!

Tattrat.....those ocean pictures are making me super homesick! At least I'll be there in 2 weeks for Thanksgiving!

Nice pics, Ryan....but Traffic is the one thing I don't miss! :p
