My eldest is a senior in h.s. I cried harder on that day than her first day in Pūnana Leo. All of these years committed to my children's education comes into full bloom reality that there are wings sprouting on their backs, ready to take flight.

My eldest's first day of kindergarten was 35 years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday! I walked her to the bus stop a short block away; watched as she boarded the bus with reticent excitement; watched the bus door close and the bus excelerate slowly; then I bolted home, jumped in the car and followed the bus up...and up...and up a steep ridge to Top of the World school. Just wanted to make sure she arrived safely! I didn't "make A" the 2nd day!

I can't believe some parents actually escorted their "babies" in the 9th grade to the Hilo High Cafeteria this morning. Are freshmen really that scared nowdays of the change of high School?

Since he's only in preschool, we have time to prepare for this moment too. Thank you for the "advance notice", it will help.

Really? For us, we're taking the new steps in preschool, and although our parental instincts wants to "hover" we certainly encouraged some level of independence today...it's healthy.

Perhaps there was a reason for the "escort", perhaps some of those are on HT and can enlighten us all.

Daughter unit was up before 6 am poking me in the arm asking if it was time to go yet.

First PTA meeting today after school. Wooo Hooo.

School starting already? I've never had the first day of school come earlier than the last week of August.

In the '"good ol' days" my school year never began before Sept. 14 and it never ended before June 14!

It's the new "year 'round" schedule, has summer being short...'bout 10 days off in October, then Thanksgiving weekend, then nearly 3 weeks off for Christmas break, then the Easter weekend, then almost 2 weeks off for Spring Break, then BAM summer again.

Kapolei School District is on a different schedule though, in order to deal with the large enrollment, the students attend school in staggered schedules. Not quite sure of the details, but it's a color coded system. And, if you have more than one child, they may not be in the same color group.

For me, Elementary years always began after Labor Day and ended by mid-June. By the time Middle (Intermediate) and H.S. rolled along, we were starting school on the Friday before a 3-day Labor Day weekend.

We're fortunate that we have flexible work schedules to accomodate our children's school schedules, however "flexible" work schedules may also result in a crunch in the finances.

Ah yeah, I remember my cousins had a similar problem, they were on different schedules so it was impossible to plan vacations. What a drag.

I like my current schedule. Start at the end of August, a month off for Christmas, week off for Easter and done by mid-may. Enjoy it while I got it, I graduate in June

i'm so glad you said that. i was a bundle of tears also. Dad just walked around all salty...and grumbly. when she started kinder, her senior year seemed like a hundred years away. those "hundred years" flew by so fast.

as far as escorting incoming freshmen, well, i DIDN'T escort my son when he went to freshmen orientation. i figured that he was a big boy and he could handle it. WOTEVAS!!! he lost his schedule before he made it home. he couldnt tell me anything about what his counselors or teachers told him, but he could tell me all of his friends summer activities. i could've choked his neck and not thought twice about it.

i should've known. my children are on opposite ends of the spectrum and he still needs to be micromanaged.

anyway...here it is....the third day of school....and my daughter still cannot log into her Hawaiian Language course. 3 days behind already. hopefully the school has untweaked this problem by the end of the day.

                            Re: First Day Of School.

My oldest started fourth grade on Wednesday, and it went well. She likes her new teacher, she's not yet come home with insecurities caused by typical classroom teasing, and she's counting down the days to her first big field trip. Actually, she's fixating most on fifth grade. I guess that's when kids "graduate" from elementary school now? 'Twas sixth when I was in school.

My son, oddly, doesn't start kindergarten until next week. But on Wednesday, he went in for half a day of orientation and testing for placement (he's coming in from special ed preschool, which, by the way, was a fantastic program for him). He was so excited to go, for weeks in advance. Even that morning, he woke me up with a sing-song voice, announcing that he was going to kindergarten. We were so sure things were going to go swimmingly.

Well, when the time came for him to leave for school, he started whimpering and whining. By the time my wife arrived with him on campus, he was howling. At the door of the classroom, he was flat-out shrieking at the top of his lungs, clinging to his mom like a barnacle. 'Twas a spectacle the whole school could enjoy. Of course our neighbors were there with pitying looks on their faces, and teachers took turns trying to sweet talk him into calming down.

Eventually they told my wife to just book it out of there. He was starting to make other kids cry! So she pried him loose and left, almost in tears herself.

When she went back to pick him up before noon, he was all smiles. The teacher said he calmed down within ten minutes of her departure. And now he's counting down the days before his return.

                            Ah, parenthood.

oh yeah, I remember my last one's first day in kindergarten. Dude was not. Having. It. Ma! Let's go! Um, nope. You gotta stay, boy! I almost cried then, which my husband was no help, because he always says "homeschool em and we can put em to work on da aina!" but he is way softer-hearted than I am when it comes to the kids.

Sometimes that bugs my butt. I wanna be the softie and the cool mom™. He should be the bad guy™. Heh.
