  • Nicknames

A nickname is a name of a person or thing other than its proper name.

There's a Snapple TV commercial currently running where the English lady (unseen) tells her husband, "Knock his knickers off anyway".

Which had me thinking what you folks nickname people, places and things around you.

Here's a starting list, yet please throw in anything else you address using a nickname.

    What do you nickname...
    1. the beach you frequent?
    2. your vehicle?
    3. your spouse (or girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever friend)?
    4. your mother?
    5. your father?
    6. your brother and sister?
    7. your children?
    8. your pet(s)?
    9. bad drivers?
    10. elderly people?
    11. young people?
    12. police officers?
    13. Military personnel?
    14. A beautiful woman or handsome man?
    15. underwear (and what's under that, if you care to say)?

    You get the drift.

Acronyms and abbreviations are most common.

Here is HT. Ryan is PZ. I'm currently in "Waiks".

    What do you nickname...
    1. the beach you frequent? We'd call KALAMAS in Kailua, KALAKS since it was near KALAKA STREET.
    2. your vehicle? In my lifetime, I've owned WHITE TRASH (don't be offended she was our white, beat up Buick used for the beach), SILVER STREAK ('87 Aerostar Van), and now we have LOCAL GIRL (Nissan Altima) and BIG GIRL (Isuzu Rodeo)...can't wait for MO' BIGGA!
    3. your spouse (or girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever friend)? BABE, SWEET PEA, KIT'N.
    4. your mother? MA.
    5. your father? DAD at home, and in the business setting, by his first name just like on the Soap Operas!
    6. your brother and sister? Our little souls call each other TITA or BROTHER.
    7. your children? MY HONEY. AND OUR LITTLEST SOUL ASKS THAT WE CALL HIM "BOY".
    8. your pet(s)? WE DON'T HAVE ANY AT THE MOMENT.
    9. bad drivers? GIRLS! Just kidding, DOOFUS.
    10. elderly people? BAD DRIVERS? GRANDMAS AND GRANDPAS.
    11. young people? THAT GENERATION. In speaking I refer to young people as a "GENERATION" since it seems their behavior is "odd, different."
    12. police officers? POLICIA. OCIFFER on a drunk occassion!
    13. Military personnel? SIR OR MA'AM. OUR TROOPS.
    14. A beautiful woman or handsome man? No cat calling from this corner, kinda boring in this department.
    15. underwear (and what's under that, if you care to say)? BIBS, PANTIES, BOXERS, and in our home, BOYS HAVE BOTOS and GIRLS HAVE BUNNIES!

      4. your mother? "Dutch"
      5. your father? Called him "Pops"
      6. your brother and sister? Her actual name
      7. your children? n/a
      8. your pet(s)? "Shadows" (Our dogs follow me everywhere, not letting one eye off me.. how flattering)
      9. bad drivers? angry expletives

      14. A beautiful woman or handsome man? "Hottie" (woman)... often followed by the comment "dammmmmm"
      15. underwear (and what's under that, if you care to say)? Nothing specific. I think I'll start calling them "knickers" in honor of my English heritage. Although that nickname refers to women's undergarments, it's kinda' fun! "Knock his knickers off"

        What do you nickname...
the beach you frequent? "the beach in front of my condo"...maybe I should shorten that to "tbifomc"!
your vehicle? I've never had a nickname for a car. My dad used to refer to his car as "Betty Buick". I think that turned me off to car nicknames!!!
your spouse (or girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever friend)? "The ex"
        your mother? "mom" or "mommo"
your father? "Pop" but usually "Poppo"
your brother and sister? "Beans" or "Beanie Bag", bestowed upon my brother by my dad, who had nicknames for everyone!
your children? "Sweet Pea" for both girls
your pet(s)? does an old, plaster of paris dachsund count?!
bad drivers? (not fit for HT...ditto for bad pedestrians!)
elderly people? Youngsters...'cuz I are one!!!
young people? that says it all!
police officers? the acronym for Constables on Patrol!
        Military personnel? Troopers
A beautiful woman or handsome man? "Hottie" for both. I saw an 80 year old hottie on the elevator the other day and promptly called my daughter. She said that sounds pretty good to her. Huh? We're gonna compete for the same guy?!!!
underwear (and what's under that, if you care to say)? "Unders"

              Re: Nicknames
              1. the beach you frequent?
My favorite beach, which I shan't describe too closely because it's kinda secluded, is known by people at a church I used belong to as "Pastor's Lot." Our pastor, a humble Japanese man who'd assumed the pastorate ten years before I was born, had purchased a beach lot when he was a young man and built a house upon it, with his own hands. When he finally retired forty years later (an astounding tenure for a Southern Baptist minister), that's where he moved. While he was our pastor, we used to go there for picnics and beach sleepovers.

              2. your vehicle?
My current vehicle doesn't have a name, but I've had cars named Angela (a red pickup) and Blueberry (a Toyota Corolla hatch)

              3. your spouse (or girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever friend)?
I've had girlfriends I named Star and Princess. I know; not very creative.

              4. your mother?
                Mom or Ma.

              5. your father?
                Dad.

              6. your pet(s)?
I have a goldfish named Gilligan.

              7. bad drivers?
"Buddy." As in, "Hey Buddy, what are you doing?" or "Which way are you going, Buddy?"

I have a friend who likes to name all of our regular haunts with something other than their actual names. So we've had hangouts called "Cliffs of Insanity," "O.J." (for "oyster jun"), "Coconut Syrups" (that was Eggs N Things), and my favorite, "The Village Idiot."

Ours started off with MooMoo but she didn't respond to the name so it devolved into Choochi. It was the one name she always came to when you called it.
