The Outrigger Reef hotel's Shorebird restaurant in Waikiki has started a showcase for the Hawaiian steel guitar on the 2nd Sunday of every month, from 2-4pm.
Here's a short clip to show the doin's at the premier show last week - www.alohavideo.tv/steel1.htm The MC and historian for the events will be Alan Akaka, whom play's steel with Genoa Keawe every Thursday evening at 6:30pm at the Waikiki Marriot 3rd fl. poolside. The excellant Greg Sardinha also shared the billing, and Bobby Ingano and Derrick Mau sat in. You can't hear much of Bobby in the clip above, but he's one of the best, and all the artist that have and will appear are the island's top players.
Any and all steel players are encouraged to bring their guitars and sit in.
The next show - Sept. 9, will have Bobby Ingano as headliner, with Derrick Mau and Jeff Au Hoy backing and sharing some steel time, along with yet another fine steeler, Casey Olsen, backed by his Dad's (veteran Hiram Olsen) band.
On Oct. 14, there fortunately will be more of the same, with Bobby, Derrick and Jeff, sharing the billing and backing each other, with as usual, Alan Akaka, and whomever else is schedualed and may show up.
The Outrigger Mgt. is to be applauded for giving local steelers a fine opportunity to display their talents and give steel guitar a place to shine at the Reef and for other musicians at their other establihments.
Come on out and support the Hawaiian steel guitar and it's players.
It was invented right here on Oahu, it's the State instrument, and is THE signature sound of Hawaii.
