  • Small decent sailboat?

Looking to get another boat and hoping for a small (20 footer or so) sailboat.
Got one you'd like to go to a nice guy?
Life is either an adventure... or you're not doing it right!!!

    What's your budget?
A friend has a rather amazing 25-footer for sale, around $15,000. Don't be fooled by the classic look -- it's a fiberglass hull, not wood. I LOVE the traditional look! Almost bought this one myself, but you probably saw what I bought instead. (Not that I'm not thinking of buying this one too, maybe.)

PS: have you been checking on CraigsList? I look there once a week or so, just to see what's out there. There's a couple of Catalina 27's; usually a Cal 20 or Cal 25.

Acoustic Guy would love this!!!!! Part of me wants to show him (he lurks now and again) and part of me wants to avoid showing him . Do you know any of the details?

She's a beauty! What make is it?
There's also a Pearson "Ariel" 26 for ten grand available...

Though I don't have enough for either yet.
Guess I'll have to keep stashing it away for now.

What kind of boat did you get Likanui?
Or are you talking of your bike?

Yeah, the red boat just has so much 'character' that you've gotta love it. She's a 1978 Erickson Junior 25, with a one-cylinder diesel engine. (Not "Ericson" as in the well-known line of sailboats.) That's about all I know, but if you want me to I'll PM you the seller's phone number,

            Good boat, reliable, and well-built.

Check out this post with photos from last Friday. She's a 30' Sea Ray, and was recently upgraded from the stock gas engines to new diesel engines (normally aspirated, non-turbo).
I went with a powerboat because it's obviously much better for doing search-and-rescue work, and for escorting paddling races from Molokai to Oahu, etc. Still get in plenty of sailing on friends boats, so it's all good.

              Nice power boat Likanui!

What'cha think of these little 20 footers?!

I just might get my Buddy in Northern Idaho to help me get one sometime. He would even get it to Spokane and ship it here.
              We'll see...

Thanks for the link. I liked the boat so much that I just called the guy and I bought it.
                Not.
Seriously, that's a really nice design. I'm a big fan of double-enders, especially in following seas.
But looking at that link, a few things come to mind.
From the four photos there, the sails look like they might be original, from 1978. Pretty blown out. So count on new sails. And the rigging looks fine for a lake boat but undersized for Hawaii conditions, so think about upgrading the standing rigging.
The link says it doesn't include a trailer, so remember you'll have to buy a shipping cradle to get it here.
It says it has a full keel, but then says the draft is only 2'10", which sounds like a centerboard or a swing-keel design and that the draft was measured with the board up. I'd like to see pix of the underbody. If it's really a fixed full keel and draws only 2'10", you might find it pretty tippy in our tradewind conditions.
Well, wait. I Googled it and found several photos at this link. I'm attaching one of them here.
It's a full keel with a cutaway forefoot. And apparently the draft really is 2'10". It seems that the bow is rounded too, which will slow you down in waves and cause a bit of pounding. And the standing headroom belowdecks is only 5', but that's not usually a problem because after all, who goes below and just stands?
There's good info for you at www.nordicaboats.com/html/halmans.html .
All in all, it looks pretty good for just $6,000. Probably cost you more than that to ship it here, eh? Unless you sail it here on its own bottom.
                Keep us posted!

Just for a chuckle, compare the underbody of the Halman 20 in the post above to the underbody of this 52-footer recently built for a singlehanded race around the world:

Great boats. And that one has Sobstad sails (!) and roller furling. Looks pretty good.
Find any more good ones here in the islands yet?
Took mine out very early this morning to bring in a disabled boat. That was part of the reason I bought it last week, so nice to be able to help someone in the first 8 days.

                        That's cool Likanui!

                        Wish me luck on this...

I found a 24' Columbia Challenger out in Waianae for sale.
I'll check it out this weekend. Owner said she's in decent shape?
                        We'll see.

                          Re: Small decent sailboat?

Two cool things have happened since the last post.

                          1) My wife came up with a Great idea for a vacation together.
I hope to make it happen!

                          2) My very good friend on the mainland is cherrying out an Alberg 30...
and has invited me to join him on the voyage to Hawaii when he's ready!

Both of these have negated my need for a sailboat at this time.

Chartering a boat in Tahiti or the Caribbean?
